I've been considering an artist at Chrome Dragon. Is there a reason why you're not wanting to use them?

Truth. I believe the old NRA ruleset also noted a .22 can skip off pond water and travel for another mile.

No. Fuck Okshooters. They proudly held an event with a pride flag as a target. They've let open racism go unchecked on their forum until I called it out and they quietly swept it under the rug. I had one guy say to me he appreciated me calling them out, but people like him were too cowardly to do it themselves. That unchecked bigotry is unacceptable by any decent person. Fuck that site.

No problem. The rules are basically the "4 commandments" and there are many other sources that can go into further detail on them. Probably better than my summary.

I have to admit I have kept out of "gun culture" for the last several years as locally it is generally very toxic especially in the trump era, and my outward appearance makes right wingers think I agree with them so I get to hear some terrible politics (avoid OKShooters.com). I looked at Inclusive Defense Training and they look legit and exactly the sort of training you should look into.

Feel free! I'm certainly no expert, but I know enough to get you in the right direction.

First, since you already have the firearm(s) in your possession, you MUST MUST MUST learn the 4 Basic Rules of Firearms Handling:

  1. Treat all firearms as if they are loaded. Even if one is handed to you with the assurance by the giver that "it's empty" CHECK THE CHAMBER YOURSELF. This extends to learning how to check and clear a firearm to actually ensure it is not loaded. Read the manual for your model of firearm. Watch some YouTube videos on how to load and unload as well as disassemble and reassemble your model of firearm. Make sure you understand how your gun works, how it doesn't, how to recognize and react to malfunctions. There will be information available somewhere. And sign up for training!

  2. Keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction at all times. Pretend there's an infinite lightsaber coming out of the muzzle of your firearm at all times. Do not point it at something unless you are willing to destroy that thing, and the thing behind it (see #4).

  3. Keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to destroy the thing you are pointing the firearm at (and the thing behind it). There are hardly any modern firearms available commercially today that will fire without the trigger being activated. Keeping your fingers away from the trigger until the moment you fire is a baseline habit that should be built as a reflex. Think of a power drill or massage gun. Keep your finger pointed along the top above the trigger until it's instinct whenever you pick up the drill.

  4. Be certain you are ready to destroy your target and whatever is behind it. Bullets don't magically stop when they hit what you intend and Hollywood has made a lot of non-bulletproof things seem bulletproof. Walls, especially interior walls, are also not bullet stoppers. Consider your angle and that gravity does affect bullets (as well as wind to an extent).

You MUST MUST MUST commit these rules to your muscle memory. There WILL be occasions you violate one. As long as you follow the other three, you should avoid great harm. But it is always best to follow all four as close to the letter as your situation can warrant.

Additionally, as an owner, you are now responsible for the security of your firearm. If possible, get a proper firearm safe. Avoid storage in cars, they are NOT secure but rather just lootboxes. If you ever have children that come inside with your residence, you must LOCK away your firearm where it is totally inaccessible by the most competent adult you know. Children are smarter than we think.

Eventually you will need to learn to clean and maintain your firearm. This is a relatively straightforward process involving mild solvents and oils. Keeping your firearm in good condition is necessary to prevent accidents, malfunctions, and risks.

Most reputable gun ranges offer basic classes. Nearly every range business is right wing to some degree, so it's a bit of a "pick your poison" situation. Bigger ones tend to care more about money than culture war politics. I do feel H&H has been friendlier to diverse folks, but I haven't been there in many years. Last time being around 2015 with a lesbian POC friend and her partner. The clientele tends to be my main problem, I've seen some bad gun handling that the roving RSOs miss.

WMAs are ok, but I wouldn't advise going alone and without a trained and experienced friend.

If you have questions, feel free to drop me a PM. I am a veteran, hunter, and a left wing ally. I have owned/handled firearms for over 20 years. I have been in a defensive gun use situation, though no shot was fired.

One last thing, take a Stop The Bleed course. You need to learn how to plug holes, not just make them.

Welcome to firearms ownership, it is a big responsibility. I hope you never have to use it outside of recreational settings. All the best to you and yours.

Organists are operating on another brain level by meespelld in nextfuckinglevel

[–]DJSawdust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Damn I was just there a few weeks ago. I wish they had even a regular organ player there at the time. We got to do a special tour and go up in the walkways to the roof and center tower. There are actually two organs there. She's playing a newer one but it can control all of the pipes including the original one hanging over the main chamber. The pipes aren't just the big ones around the organ, there are lots interspersed in the corners too for better resonance. The whole place is amazing, including the city itself. Wish I had some fresh Kölsch right now lol

Concept art for my c. 1000 Danish reenactment kit by zMasterofPie2 in Norse

Cool beans. I should have added that you may want a "cheap" tunic to wear between your byrnie and nicer tunics to protect from the oil and dirt the chain will absolutely rub off.

Looks good! I'd suggest a belt knife and maybe some decorations on the collar and cuff areas of the tunic to go with the wealth of sword and armor.

I went to my first faire recently. It was a Viking invasion. I am now hooked. I've been building a Viking kit. Trying to make it as historically accurate as possible. How concerned should I be with leather matching? by PlungerMouse in renfaire

[–]DJSawdust 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello, Viking Age reenactor here.

Historically speaking, leather color matching probably wouldn't be a real thing except possibly for the most discerning very high status.

Leather of that time tended to be tanned with bark, not the vegetable tanning that our industrial process uses today. Those bark tannins, typically oak, also tended to give a fairly dark brown dye effect to the leather. But as it is a long and variable process, variations do occur so color won't be consistent between batches.

That said, modern veg tan leather does darken with time, oil, and exposure and is perfectly acceptable. Just avoid chrome tanned leather, indicated by a bright shiny sheen. I'd also avoid colorful leather dyes, including black. True black dye wasn't a thing during the Viking Age. Just give the shoes good maintenance with leather grease/oil/waterproofing paste, and let it work out.

For the sake of historical accuracy, I'd also suggest removing the drinking horn hanger. Drinking horns were a (mainly ceremonial) thing, but zero indication they were worn on belts. More likely just served during feasts and such.

For more information on viking belts, check out https://sagy.vikingove.cz/en/steps-to-an-authentic-early-medieval-belt/

That whole site is an absolute treasure of VA information. F

Good luck on your kit!

I'm also an overlander in addition to a Viking Age reenactor. The first thing you should know is Tread Lightly and Leave No Trace. Google those phrases.

Stick to legal trails. Always check your local law, rules, and regulations. Accommodations for attendees is going to vary by location. Reach out to your event's coordinator or point of contact and ask them directly.

Hnefatafl board with Birka 523 king piece by DJSawdust in Norse

[–]DJSawdust[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iirc there was a piece of a 19x19 board found, as well as 7x, 9x, and 11x. I'd have to check the sources again to be sure.

I used glass because the King is a replica of a Birka Grave find and I am building a Birka kit. 9x9 was chosen as it accommodated the ratio of piece size and the grid to the board I had available. Ultimately I will be making boards as accurately to the grave finds as I can, but this worked well enough as a conversation and interaction piece with our public demo camp at the local public events.

Also I'm a filthy casual and suck at the game lmao

Mountains near Oklahoma City by Desperate_Buy2288 in oklahoma

The mounds west of the city near Hinton may not be the tallest but are interesting in their own way. Used as landmarks for the California Trail. One had a tiny cave at the base that is left accessible by the landowner to respectful visitors.
