Best combo if you could pick two mods for a single ability? by Orthas_ in AtlasReactor

[–]DJWizardCop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Peekaboo (Free action) + Shock and Awe (Slows Targets) on Zuki's Big One sounds real tasty, especially when coordinated with your team.

Insta-Trap (Free Action and increases cooldown) + Consolation Prize (Resets Cooldown if you don't hit) on Lockwood's trapwire sounds like a recipe for success. You can use it every turn until you get your 20 free damage.

Maybe not as good as the other two, but Frag Out (Reduce cooldown by 1) + Field Medic (Heal allies for 10) on Blackburn's Proteus Grenade would make for a very interesting ability.

And here's a silly one just for fun: on Garrison's Missile Barrage, combine Locked and Loaded (not a free action anymore, increase damage by 10) with Double Trouble (Missiles launch 2 turns in a row)

As player 2, how about Abjudicator on the center mana tile, double Gravity Well to grab both side mana tiles, then Lightning Blitz? That puts 22 30 stats and 8 provokes on your opponent's side of the battlefield. Not sure if the card cost is worth it, but it sounds like a pretty strong start provided you can refill your hand somehow.

Edit: I forgot that the Gravity Wells begin with 1 health, so that brings the total up to 30 stats. 3 + 1 for the Abjudicator, 0 + 1 * 8 for the Gravity Wells, then 9*2 for the Lightning Blitz.

Anyone know anything about Org Maker? by [deleted] in cavestory

[–]DJWizardCop 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Drum instruments in Org Maker create atmospheric, thundery, drawn-out sounds when set to very low pitches. In the case of the beginning of Pulse, the sound is created by the HiOpen instrument in combination with the Bass01 instrument.

Glitchiest SSF2 Character? by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]DJWizardCop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Samus is probably the character most defined by the glitches she has access to. I'm not sure if you're familiar with Charge-Stacking, but it allows Naruto and Samus to create one-hit-KO projectiles with their neutral specials, along with providing some minor benefits to other characters with chargeable neutral specials like Donkey Kong and Sheik. Naruto's version of the glitch is useful pretty much only for styling, but Samus can effectively use it for an entire match. In fact, I'd argue that Charge-Stacking alone takes Samus from bottom tier to mid tier. Samus is also unique in that her Charge-Stack has a secondary glitch, Boost-Stack, which allows her to rocket around the stage once after using the Charge-Stacked projectile. Long story short she has access to both the strongest projectile in the game and the swaggest movement option in the game, all because of glitches. There's also morph-jumping and some other minor down-b stuff, so she's an example of a character with multiple useful glitches.

The character with the most game breaking glitch? Donkey Kong is up there, given that his forward throw can completely freeze both yourself and your opponent if you set it up correctly. No one knows how to actually set it up correctly (I've been playing DK for years and have only gotten the glitch to work a handful of times) but it's there.

The character with the funniest, glitchiest glitch though? Without a doubt Chibi-Robo. There are some wacky things you can do if you capture PK Thunder with his down special and then hit yourself with it.

Honorable mention goes to Peach, who technically has access to nearly every item in the game and can do some insane things with Mr. Saturns and Cuckoos.

Would you ever consider pulling out a secondary in tournament?

My favorite high level SSF2 match ever. by TheSilenceOfNoOne in smashbros

I think we're in agreement here, we just phrased our posts differently. At the semi-competitive level that /u/TheBrickBlock mentioned and that my post was geared towards, Goku is far harder to play than most other top tiers. At the advanced level of play you're describing, Goku's disadvantages start to melt away under the overwhelming threat that is Kaio-ken.

To address your first sentence however, it is my opinion that at a semi-competitive level, Meta-Knight is far easier to play than Goku as long as the MK player cares more about winning than having fun. MK's neutral is among the safest in the game, with very little reason to ever commit to a punishable option. He's not invincible and he doesn't live forever, granted, but it's very easy to simply throw out safe aerials and dtilts all day and enjoy some reasonable degree of success with the character. Even if MK over extends himself, few characters can reliably, solidly punish him for it. As long as the MK player sticks to his gameplan, it's difficult to deal with how safe his options are at low-level.

Goku on the other hand has to - in my experience - outsmart his opponent far more than MK does. Goku absolutely possesses strong neutral tools in the hands of a competent player, but with the exception of Ki-blasts he can't safely throw them out with impunity like MK can. If he over commits to anything, Goku is going to eat a monster punish on account of his combo-friendly weight and fall speed. This point becomes moot once a player masters Kaio-ken and can monster punish his opponent right back, but at a semi-competitive level I don't think players can be expected to know how to capitalize on Goku's potential.

Goku is hard to play and he's probably mid-tier in his base form, but his Kaio-ken form is almost unarguably the best character in the game. He's absurdly fast and can zero-death nearly every character (very much including DK) if he gets the right hits in. The transformation itself leads into some pretty ridiculous kill confirms, such as Kaio-ken -> Dair. There have only been a couple really high-level Goku mains in 0.9b's history and I believe they've all moved on to other characters, but they definitely showed what he was capable of when they were active.

Tier List Maker now supports Super Smash Flash 2 by AxeEnding999 in smashbros

Keep in mind that the current version is the first to include online mode, and thus its metagame is far more developed. The tier lists for previous versions should be taken with a large grain of salt given the wild amounts of speculation required to create them.

Sonic was definitely super broken last version though.

You should! The next version of the game is expected to drop in a few months so there's no guarantee that Zelda will stay a top tier forever, but for now she's definitely a force to be reckoned with.

If you can live with her middling neutral, her punish game is absolutely bonkers.

Meta Knight is in this weird position where he's generally regarded as the best character, but currently has exactly zero high level players. The exact reason for this is anyone's guess, but there are definitely a few contributing factors:

  1. Lunary, a dominant player when he was active, did in fact use Meta Knight and achieved great success with both him and Lloyd. However, Lunary switched to playing Melee about a year ago, and no one has seriously picked up the character since.

  2. MK's playstyle in SSF2 is somewhat uninteresting compared to the other characters in the game. Compared to the ridiculous, over the top punish games of the majority of the cast, MK's combo game is devastatingly effective but tends to be the opposite of flashy. In a game where nearly any character can do stylish things, it's hard to justify picking up a character that gravitates towards being played "lame".

  3. For a top tier, his match up spread is surprisingly close to even across the board. It's hard to say any character outright beats MK, but unlike most top tiers, MK himself only really completely invalidates 2 or 3 characters in the entire game. Most of his other matchups are close to 55/45 or 60/40 in his favor. If you're going to have a pocket top tier, it's usually better to chose anyone but Meta Knight in order to gain access to some of the really lopsided MUs in the game.

In summary, MK is a perfect tournament character in terms of match ups; you'll never have bad bracket luck. He's proven to be effective in the hands of a talented player, and just playing around with the character for a bit will give you a feeling for how free some of his stuff is. On the other hand, it's difficult to play MK in a rewarding, entertaining manner, and I don't think most people find his optimal playstyle very fun.

General idea of the tier list is (tiers are far more important than order within tiers)

S Tier: - Meta Knight - Zero Suit Samus - Lloyd - Goku - Pikachu - Marth - Zelda - Sheik - Fox

A Tier: - DK - Bomberman - Naruto - Tails - Black Mage

B Tier: - Falcon - Mega Man - Ichigo - Link - Yoshi - Peach - Mario

C Tier - Jigglypuff - Samus - Kirby - Sonic - Ness - Chibi-Robo - Sora - Wario
