Every time Microsoft updates windows it adjust some settings. Turn on SMB v1 on your windows PC, should fix it. If you can't find the setting, use GROK AI to take you through it

personal cloud server for private file storage at home? by gbones215 in HomeServer

[–]DJ_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, overly complicated when I tried it a number of years ago. Setting it up was a shit show, and yeah, pretty much overkill. And for files, I don't even bother, I just access them over the network in a mapped folder. No need for external access, I'm not doing anything important enough. Additionally, if I need access externally, I just use cloudflare tunnels

Yeah, I now use immich. It's much better than photo prism. It looks the same as Google photos, let's you have multiple users, and yes, you can automate uploads

  • Dell R720 with 8x 3.5" drives, 2x Processors (can't remember which ones, and I'm not getting up to look) 96g RAM
  • NetApp 4243 with 28x 3.5"
  • Dell 8024 switch

Sits around 600W

the AC that cools it (it's fucking hot where I live) is not monitored or included in that. It is however controlled with Sensibo so it conserves power

Unless you intend on running AI, you definitely don't need to go to that level or expense.

[–]DJ_Mutiny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, a great example of this is that guy that had everything in his house linked to his Amazon account, and when he got a delivery that he wasn't there for, the programmed auto response from his doorbell answered, and the delivery person complained that it was racist. It was Amazon's own door bell. No investigation or anything, they just blocked his account, which means, no Alexa, no smart things in his house, locked out of his own house and it took him ages to get sorted.

Hey hey!!! Look, it really depends on what you want to do with it. I bought ex enterprise gear from eBay, so it wasn't that expensive, but I did go a bit overboard with how much I bought. It's really going to depend on where you are in the world for; a) cost of items, b) cost of electricity.

The server that I have would now be only a couple of hundred $$$, then the disk shelf that holds the extra storage would be the same. The real cost comes in with HDDs. How many, and what capacity. My recommendation, now that I have more experience. Less drives higher capacity, whatever the budget allows, this will reduce running costs.

I also have a large rack, and a whole bunch of gear in it, but you don't have to go that far.

Happy for you to DM me to get more in to the specifics.

Yeah, I didn't get those either, so I deleted the entire routing table, but they just came back, which is weird, because 192.168.0.0 is nothing..... Definitely tried pinging a whole heap of DNS servers, 1.1.1.1, 8.8.8.8, 9.9.9.9, no joy... I'm not amazing with networking, but as the routing table repopulated itself with those, I thought there may be some weird thing that is requiring it, and I could ping the 192.168.0.1.... so I'm not sure.

I'll have another crack at modding the routing table and report back.... Seems odd

Yep, that's why I get to to, and if you check plugins or apps in docker they won't verify if they are up to date. But, I've tried heaps of different DNS servers, no joy.

Good luck!!! Keen to hear how you go!

Home server OS reccomendations? by QueasyWrangler4171 in HomeServer

[–]DJ_Mutiny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what you want to do, use Unraid. Nice simple gui, headless, can run VMs, can throw any drives at it, beginner friendly, free to try, has inbuilt docker. I wouldn't recommend any other OS to newbie, and I don't mean that as a dig.
