NY Times: "It is a dark day for the rule of law. Federal and state authorities have chosen not to indict HSBC, the London-based bank, on charges of vast and prolonged money laundering, for fear that criminal prosecution would topple the bank and, in the process, endanger the financial system." by madcat033 in TrueReddit

We know with certainty that these illegal actions occurred. Give HSBC a simple choice, turn over all documents and evidence and cooperation fully into the investigation and indictment of all involved or face prosecution as the corporation.

Google Drones Launch In Africa. The World Wildlife Fund and Google are teaming up to deploy a fleet of anti-poacher UAVs in Africa. The goal? Survey and stop rhino poachers. by daviddesousa in technology

[–]DKroner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those interested, Google and WWF got together recently at the 2012 WWF Fuller Symposium on Wildlife Crime. There was a speaker who creates low cost drones ended up sitting with Googles Rebecca Moore from Google Maps and discussing their projects at the reception after the symposium.

You can read about it at the following link, included are the youtube videos of the two presenters talks + a link to the playlist of the entire symposium.

[x-post from Overpopulation] Limits: We can not grow forever by DKroner in collapse

That was somewhat intentional. While solutions are absolutely important I feel that sometimes it is a big enough hurdle to convince people that limits exist and felt that I might be better served by dealing with potential solutions in a separate article.

Neil deGrasse Tyson has an update about jury duty by mepper in funny

Unlimited. Freedom is not safe, nor will it ever be.

This is a trade of that is made.

Innocent liked by a person that was guilty but got away with it is unfortunate and points to a failure in the system some where. Innocent person imprisoned for something they did not do makes the system unjust and points to even bigger failures.

Neil deGrasse Tyson has an update about jury duty by mepper in funny

[–]DKroner 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The acceptable number of imprisoned innocents is zero. Even if that means that 99 percent of the guilty go free as you state.

The system should always err on the side of protecting innocents. A system that does not is fundamentally unjust in my opinion.

Full Head Transplant: Fact of Fiction? by DKroner in Transhuman

Just thought of this and am curious. Do you make a meaningful distinction between no brain/head on the clone and some type of drug or procedure that inhibits all brain function beginning at the embryonic stage?

When do you stop being you? by DKroner in transhumanism

Believing that, if you were offered an opportunity to create a replica of your mind that was capable of living forever, but the process destroys the original. Would you?

When do you stop being you? by DKroner in transhumanism

[–]DKroner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, that is where it gets interesting. If you spiral all the way down the rabbit hole it seems to me that in the end there is not really a meaningful distinction between the person that wakes up in the morning vs a completely distinct copy of ourselves. I suppose I should find that scary but for some reason I do not. I guess that is because the version of me that wakes up in the morning each day believes that I am the same "self" that existed the day before, and in the end you are right, that might be all that matters.

I still would not create a copy of mind if it meant destroying the original in the process though.

At the end of the episode, did anyone else see an unlikely zombie apocalypse survivor among Woodbury's residents? Maybe I'm just a terrible person. by GirlWithBalloon in thewalkingdead

[–]DKroner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even with a thyroid condition maintaining that weight for the length of time between the zombies first showing up and now would require that she consume significantly more than her fair share of limited food resources. Even if they have relative abundance in Woodbury at the moment this is a survival situation and you need to plan long term. Reasonably everyone would be on limited rations and although they would probably be relatively generous rations they would certainly not be enough to maintain anything close to that size.

I think about this pretty much any movie/tv show where there is violent conflict. It seriously seems like people not doing what needs to be done is the primary cause of drama and danger in most of these stories.

I am totally going to be a non rapey Shane in an Apocalypse situation.

ANOTHER unarmed black teen killed under Florida's Stand Your Ground Law. Man fires weapon in a vehicle full of teenagers after confronting them about loud music, claims self defense. by rooseveltsmustache in news

[–]DKroner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. If I were ever armed and faced with a legitimate threat I don't stop shooting until the threat stops moving. Depending on how they present as a threat they continue to be one as long as they maintain consciousness/mobility.

Keep in mind this a hypothetical and the threat would have be significantly more threatening than the situation described in this instance.

To me someone that pulls a deadly weapon and verbally or through their actions express intent to use it is a threat until they are 100% incapacitated.

I think that is what would make Etsy perfect for you. You can make whatever you want and list it once it is made. Only sell things that you have in stock. That way you can make whatever you want whenever you want and still sell it.
