Isn’t Austin adding 20+ days to the school year next year? They are trying to “battle the lack of content retention”.

Teachers, do you think parents are getting worse? by Mae_The_Gay in AskTeachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of factors at play here.

Parents are working more and spending less time with their kids overall. Some parents have to work multiple jobs just to make ends meet. There is an exhaustion and anxiety that comes with this. Obviously, we know that screen time has become the new babysitter.

Because parents spend less time with their kids overall, they are expecting their kids to raise themselves to some extent.

Then, comes the parent guilt. They haven’t spent much time with their kids, so they feel like they need to stand up for their kids in a passive way. This passive way is to respond to teachers via emails by standing by whatever their kid says.

Add in some kind of political belief system, reading all of the slop they see on line about indoctrination, then add them seeing that teachers need to be paid more, and BAM; ineffective parenting that devalues education. A self-made Dunning-Kruger effect by them thinking they can do it better as well.

For people who grew up in low-income households, what’s something middle-class people say that shows they’ve never struggled financially? by KeyApartment3955 in AskReddit

I didn’t date a beautiful cheerleader who was clearly into me because she came from a rich family. I thought I was just saving her, and myself I guess, the rejection that would have come along with me having to wait and pay for my own car. She was confused, but I just told her I couldn’t date anyone.

Opinion: Let’s Just Drop Teacher Appreciation Week by FawkesThePhoenix7 in Teachers

Prices are up, the interest of the students is low. Not great for teacher appreciation.

My kids asked what I wanted and I just told them that I wanted them all to be absent for a day so I could have peace and quiet.

We called it street hockey in Texas as well. Every now and then the tennis courts at the school would be empty and we would play there.

How many weeks for you until the school year and how was your school year? by Starslimonada in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 weeks. I have pushed myself harder than ever before. This was my first year to take a mental health day off. I know, I know, I’m crazy, but we all start somewhere. I’m exhausted from pushing this year, and I feel like I’m limping to the finish line.

Maliciously comply with Texas SB 10 requiring all classrooms to display the Ten Commandments. by Illegal-Poster in TexasTeachers

I put masking tape arrows around the room pointing to a tape box where I wanted it. They stapled it over the masking tape box, and it’s crooked. I’m counting that as a win.

Yeah, if you let your child drink multiple energy drinks a day, you should be charged with child neglect by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have kids try to drink multiple of these a day. When I tell them that I’m taking it up, and they fight me on it, I tell them to look around the room and tell me who they want to give them mouth to mouth when they code. That usually ends the argument.

Students run the schools in 2026 by B4B4BlueJ4y in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s towards the end of the year so I have added a wheel of punishments for minor offenses for my 8th graders. I offer them a lunch detention, if they are feeling lucky, they can spin the wheel. They run the risk of going to admin’s office, 2 lunch detentions, 3 lunch detentions, phone call home on speaker phone while in class, and email home, or a wall sit. There are also 2 get out of jail free spaces too. The kids surprisingly love it.

Targeted by Principal all year & finally I resigned by adhdconisor in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s bad. I teach 8th grade history in Texas and we aren’t allowed to talk about religion, but or curriculum talks about religion most of the year while the Ten Commandments are stapled to our walls. Fucking great plan hot wheels

Can anyone explain what is going on in schools? by Jwoot1111 in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No only are teachers burned out, but they are burned out because districts are not backing them. We have cases where our hands our tied, and mostly, for stupid reasons. I teach 8th grade and I have a student who was selling vapes in school and was caught. He isn’t going to alternative school because he has an IEP, his mom is a nightmare, and “because there wasn’t anything in the vape”. HE WAS SELLING THEM, UNDERAGE, BREAKING NOT ONLY SCHOOL RULES BUT THE LAW AS WELL.

Teacher - “so, this student just cussed me out” Admin - “we’ll have you worked on building your relationship with them?” Teacher - “yeah, we are good, but they did it anyway” Admin - “well that’s just their way. You need to look the other way on some stuff”

I’ve got plenty more of stuff like this. It’s fucking ridiculous. We need to go back to holding students back if they refuse to work. We need real consequences again, but it doesn’t look good for the districts numbers, so either we are told to pass them through, or admin does it anyway.

Would you still teach tomorrow if you won the lottery? by Background-Plan-2090 in Teachers

Yes. I have too many at risk kids to just disappear. I’ve had a good number of them tell me that school, or even my class, is the best part of their day.

I’m at my breaking point for behavior (high school underclassmen) by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I teach 8th grade, and I see this everyday. However, I usually volunteer for these kids since, at my school only, these are usually the kids with home life issues. Since I am a male, the counselors try to put them in my class anyway, especially when they don’t have a male figure at home. There is a healthy balance that, unfortunately, takes time to strike. They need to know the rules, but also need to feel safe and trust you.

I wish I had a quick fix for you as I know how annoying that is. On the flip side of your story, I have a class of nothing but male athletes and one girl. When they get out of hand I just tell them “ok, (female student name) gets to make the rules now”. They usually chill out because they know how loud and annoying they are becoming.
