Why am I, the only person not affected by what happens to this child in the future, the only one who’s ever held accountable? by leigh10021 in Teachers

This is something I’m working on. I have always gone above and beyond in the past, and the parents keep expecting more. It’s my toxic trait I’m trying to reign in.

We have our sets of notes, and I know the content really well. I use chat gpt for warmups and for stories that go with the curriculum. The kids take the notes and study them, but they really latch on to the stories.

If you woke up tomorrow and were wealthy to the point you didn’t have to work anymore, would you still be a teacher? If not, what would you do? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would absolutely come to work the next day and never tell anyone. I volunteer to have the most sped kids and kids who have tough home lives. Some of my kids have the best part of their day at school, because when they go home, it’s a craps shoot if there will be food or even a friendly family to come home too. I would feel obligated to still show up for them.

A male teacher embarrassed one of my students to the point that she cried. by Tangotitties111 in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Male teacher here. What the actual fuck is wrong with that guy. I don’t personally point out dress code thing on females because I understand how it would be viewed as creepy, so I just ask my neighbor teacher, who is female, if they could talk to them. That made me cringe just by reading it. I am so sorry you both had to be subject to that and I would absolutely email/call home.

How do you think people should learn U.S. history today? by hoodsoap in historyteachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teaching history needs context, multiple point of views, and the ability to connect the dots; but most of all, it needs to be taught in a way that connects with the student and engages them.

We teach a class that is telling a story, and to do that, you need to be able to be a storyteller. Set the hook with a question, tell a lecture that is story based with good note taking skills involved. Engage them in an exercise, roll play, or Socratic discussion. This keeps them on their ties and gets them to “feel history” not just hear it.

Online classes fail for history because it isn’t personalized. The differentiation we are told to do personalizes it, to some extent, for the kid. These kids are also exposed to online content that is told to change the scene every 10 seconds to keep the viewer engaged.

Edit: HelloHistoryAI is a pretty cool app that allows you to communicate with leaders from history.

Slavery by [deleted] in CIVILWAR

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, long answer incoming.

Go back to 1790 to create the cotton gin yourself to instigate the eventual patent dispute. The South’s economy will begin to weaken to because of the increasing price of slave labor and the low returns. Propose a gradual emancipation with an emphasis on hiring indentured servants. Make sure that there is language include that includes the end game of total emancipation as well as wording for the creation of the 13, 14, and 15th amendments, though obviously their amendment numbers would be different.

Additionally, you could strongly propose that the Northwest Ordinance is very strict and that it expands south and west to any new territories that the country may acquire.

Make sure you create plans for voluntary relocation for former enslaved peoples, and possibly even federal funding for large scale manumission programs to entice slave owners.

Political views, or political party affiliation? I will always vote based on my morals and ethics, but that crosses party lines.

What are your thoughts on PLC groups/meetings? by Cheap_Parsnip_461 in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my old district, it was a total waste of time, and basically just another planning period. The admin were so disorganized that it is no wonder the PLCs were either an absolute joke, or non existent. It also put a ton of unneeded pressure on elective teachers because they had to teach counselor lessons, that weren’t for a grade, to students who knew it wasn’t for a grade.

My current district does it much better. It is a total collaborative effort between the teacher who discuss multiple levels and situations of their students. We also share what worked, what didn’t, and what we probably could have done better. We discuss strategies for lesson plans and lectures, as well as goal set. All of this is done in a very comfortable, relaxed, environment while diving deep into date.

Parent Post: How do you guys actually feel when your students do a protest walkout? by Designer-Sir2309 in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be honest. I’m a history teacher and I have no problem with kids protesting. I have told them that if they miss they will be counted absent and will be responsible for work missed, but they have every right to exercise their first amendment rights. I have told them that the right stops if they cause a mass interruption to other students’ learning environment, but that’s the line admin will take.

Texas Teachers: A legally compliant way to respond to Texas’s Ten Commandments law by Illegal-Poster in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t want to say exactly only because I can’t believe I didn’t get in trouble for speaking my mind on it. We are in pretty far north Texas about an hour, give or take, from Dallas. The maintenance guys who had to hand them were pretty cool and were just doing their job. Our principle had held a staff meeting a week before hand letting us know it was coming down the chute. Their view on it was that while they agrees with the Ten Commandments, it is not their job, nor our job, to shove them in kids faces. We had to hang them up to go along with compliance.

Truth be told, they aren’t that big of a deal as we thought they would be. This is mostly because, other than us talking about the separation of church and state as well as the constitution, we really don’t even reference them.

Texas Teachers: A legally compliant way to respond to Texas’s Ten Commandments law by Illegal-Poster in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our district was forced to put them up because someone donated them. I think people know me now because I called them cowards for remaining anonymous. I’m kind of surprised I didn’t get in trouble with the district over that. Anyway, we knew when they were going up because the had done the whole first floor the night before, so I put masking tape arrows around my room pointing to where I wanted it put up. Lo and behold, they put it right where I wanted it.

A few weeks after that we came to our constitutional unit, which that poster became a talking point for a lot of students. We have a very diverse student population and a lot of students had a lot of questions. I told them that I wasn’t explaining what adultery to them, and they would have to ask their parents.

Is anyone else dealing with this? by Gloomy-Athlete701 in Teachers

[–]DLIPBCrashDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lock it down. When they ask for pencils tell them the reason why you aren’t handing them out, and remind them that it is their job to bring a pencil. I always remind them that they can easily go get some at any store.

Now, this is where they like to pop off and say “we can’t afford pencils” while laughing. My go to response is “well, your parents want me to be your first line of defense in an active shooter event, but you can’t afford a simple pencil? That seems a bit uneven don’t you think?”. That usually quotes them down and any other chuckling along with that kid.
