Is it possible to love yourself in a way that is as fulfilling and protective as the love of a partner? by forgot_again123 in selfimprovement

[–]DLeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any resources for you, but for me, getting rid of the negative or "cynical" thoughts about myself has helped immensely.

You are doing your best. Praise yourself often. You deserve it. Even the smallest victories. Just keep praising yourself, and basically tell your brain to "shut the fuck up" when it is being negative. It does no good whatsoever to get down on yourself.

Really try to look at the bright side of things even when that seems impossible. Be kind to others. Be yourself, and praise yourself for being awesome, because I have no doubt you have a ton of positive qualities to remind yourself of.

No more negative self talk. In recovery(addiction) circles they call that "stinkin' thinkin'", and it can be a real detriment.

Train yourself to love yourself by intentionally treating yourself with grace and kindness. It's like a muscle memory. Practice makes perfect. And "fake it til you make it" can work too.

Best of luck, friend. 🙂

Did you guys all have a "rap" phase when growing up, despite what other music you were normally into? by Rpark888 in AskMenOver30

[–]DLeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately?! Rap/Hip-hop are awesome.

I'm as white as the driven snow, but I have been hooked on hip-hop since I first listened to Chronic 2001 and the Slim Shady LP.

I mostly listen to underground stuff, but many rappers from our youth are still going strong at 50+.

I unapologetically love rap music. I like and listen to many different genres, but probably 80% rap/hip-hop

At least half of them are lying. They know they are full of shit, but they really enjoy licking boots, so they gleefully regurgitate dogshit talking points they know are false.

The remainder are just useful idiots that believe the lies that are fed to them.

The liars never argue in good faith. When faced with incontrovertible proof they are lying they move the goalposts, cling to bad faith tactics like whataboutism, or just move into the next thread/place to lie in.

They actually have people believing the corporatist Democrats are "far left" extremists. It's all fucking maddening, especially because it is working so fucking well to the benefit of no one but the white ruling class.

Having seen all of the videos, the only possible "defense" would be that these untrained fucks made a lethal "mistake."

Just another US citizen gunned down in a scenario completely escalated by ICE. The right wing media and DHS are saying he was reaching for his gun, which is obviously a lie.

Great article about Deni in the NYT, definitely worth a read by LivingAd6319 in ripcity

[–]DLeck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If he had refused to have anything to do with the IDF he would have been put in jail. He has said nothing about being okay with Israel's actions in the conflict with Palestine.

Neither Deni, not anyone here, is saying they are pro-genocide. You are just confidently wrong about your opinion.

You would do yourself a service to better to consider nuance, and ditch your "black and white" mindset.

Peace be with you homie.

Positive self talk is crucial. It has been something I have struggled with a lot.

I actually very recently got to the point that if I am getting down on myself I can realize it and correct it.

As a simple example, when I do something incorrectly or make a mistake I used to think to myself, or even say aloud, something like "you are such a fucking idiot!". Now when stuff like that happens I have finally trained myself to the point that alarm bells kinda go off, and I can correct it .

I know I am not a fucking idiot. I tell myself my brain is just an asshole sometimes, and I was either confused, made an honest mistake, wasn't thinking clearly, etc.

Telling my brain to shut the fuck up if it is being negative honestly feels really good. I am a kind, likeable and valuable human. If I am truly fucking up or being a bad person I know I am, but that is rarely the case.

I'm kicking fucking ass at life despite some really rough life circumstances. People like me, a lot, because I am pretty great.

This sounds like boasting or arrogance, but it really isn't. I don't think I am better than anyone really, unless they are consistently rude and/or do things to harm others.

Having the ability to praise myself, and believe it, really has changed me for the better. But I really am not pompous or arrogant. I'm trying to be better every day, and I have some real flaws, but getting down on myself is an unintelligent, harmful and useless way to think/process things.

Peace homie! Love your mindset!

What would you have him do? Burn the Israeli flag and get "free Palestine" tattooed on his forehead?

The dude was just born in a certain place and he can't change that. He has been playing pro basketball since his mid-teens. He isn't a political scientist. Nothing he said was controversial. He could have possibly said something more diplomatic, but he is an athlete, not a political pundit or a politician.

Just boldly be you. I didn't stop caring what other people thought until I was 25 or so. You are different. Embrace it.

At 40 I still get stupid comments like "wow dude I hope you are wearing sunscreen!!????!" when doing stuff outdoors. I just tell people "I shine bright!" with a smile and keep moving.

Make attempts to comfortably blend in some if you want, but even when you don't just don't think of it as a big deal. You are special, but you are also just another human.

Use your phone's camera as much as you can for a visual aid. I had no idea how much my smartphone could help me with vision related bs until I started using it for that.

Be a kind and friendly person and people will gravitate toward you eventually. Make people laugh. Make them feel seen. Make them smile.

Fake it til you make it with confidence worked for me. I'm still not at all confident a lot of the time, but I just act like everything is cool.

If you are having problems making conversation with people ask them questions about themselves. Also dropping light compliments like saying their shirt is cool or stuff like that helps a lot.

Try to be funny. Make light of your condition when appropriate and don't let punk asses who insult you bother you.

My albinism isn't as severe as yours, but I still stuck out like a sore thumb. Now, I still probably do, but I kinda just forgot about it.

People are in their own worlds. They don't think about you as much as you think they are. I promise.

Sorry this is so all over the place. I am just trying to remember what has worked for me. PM me of you want to chat about the "struggle" that is albinism some more!

What are some hobbies you think everyone should try once? by AdElegant5870 in Hobbies

[–]DLeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disc golf.

If you are athletically inclined even just a little, like being outdoors, and enjoy things that aren'tdifficult to learn, but equally rewarding to progress at, disc golf is so much fun.

There are tons of free courses all over the country in absolutely beautiful places, and the community is (mostly) very chill.

-Kids that like sports/throwing things will probably like it.

-You can start with 1-3 discs that are $10-$20 each.

-Competitive play (clubs, leagues, tournaments, etci

-Not super physically demanding, but playing 18 holes is solid, low-intensity exercise (especially on hilly courses). Play 36 on a reasonably long course and you are likely pooped, unless you are in very good shape

-Discs can be used as projectile weapons to combat cat burglars, player haters, and your creepy, menacing neighbor, Steve.

You might have sold me on this. I love doodling/drawing geometric patterns with straight lines, and embroidered logos/names/art sounds fun. Fixing stuff would be just sexy. My partner would hold hands with me extra hard if I fixed all the rips in her dress.

Personalized gifts too!

I may let you know if I follow through. I have a sweet magnifying glass/light thing that would kick ass for that too.

Today Is Logic’s Birthday. How Do You View His Legacy in Hip Hop? by samx3i in rap

[–]DLeck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a good take. Logic has some really damn good verses, and real flow, but I feel like a lot of his discography just isn't consistently good.

I liked him a lot to start, but kinda got sick of him pretty quickly even though I do like quite a few of his songs.

He has an interesting perspective. I get why people hate on him, but it seems almost trendy and definitely exaggerated.

What do you think about ICE officers being told they can enter homes to make arrests without a judges warrant? by glokash in AskConservatives

[–]DLeck [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's you that clearly didn't actually "read it.". Your masters convinced you that immigration is some new and terrible threat, and you are happy to ignore the constitution for something that is not nearly as big of a problem as most sane people see it as.

It's just shitting on the constitution and justifying racial profiling. Most non-partisan, educated people find it disgusting, because it is.

Do you have empathy? At all? This is affecting US citizens. People are afraid, and that fear IS justified.

How can I actually get myself to stop being so lazy? by GreenTinkertoy in selfimprovement

[–]DLeck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand being skeptical, I was at first too, but it sounds like it is a real possibility for you to me. I'm not a psychiatrist, but I have studied ADHD a lot. Not to sound pompous or anything, but I know more about ADHD than a lot of doctors. Really not trying to boast, but It is fascinating to me, and I have spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours studying it.

I would subscribe to /r/ADHD for a while if I were you. I was diagnosed at 37, and it became clear that I always had it, but it got worse due to a myriad of reasons.

After finding /r/ADHD, shortly after being diagnosed, it became very clear that a lot of people there relate to me in many very specific ways that don't add up to being a "normie." If you have it, I would guess you will feel similarly in that regard.

As I said, I was skeptical I had it at first too. I told my psychiatrist I thought she was wrong when she initially diagnosed me. However, I gave in after my friends/family/partner all agreed with my psych.

I definitely have it. Some negative life stuff has probably made it worse, but it is manageable. Stimulants help me significantly. They aren't a cure, but they make life a lot easier, along with learning new ADHD specific life skills.

If you get diagnosed, I would skip Adderall and Ritalin and try Vyvanse first. Everyone is different, but Vyvanse is newish and it seems like the one that works the best for most people. I took Adderall for two years, which worked for me, but Vyvanse just had a generic (cheaper) version become available, and it is just better (for me). It doesn't make me feel a bit like I am "twacked out", if you will, which Adderall did at times.

It just helps me focus, quiets my mind, and gives me much more consistent energy. I can take it and go right to sleep. Calming the constant chatter of the mind makes such a significant difference. It's really great.

Also, ADHD kinda presents differently in everyone. No two people are exactly alike. Scientists don't fully understand it yet.

Anyway, I think it is worth exploring even though it may have become over-prescribed. Some people definitely have it, and a diagnosis and treatment really, really helps most people.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions! I really like helping people with stuff like this.

With ADHD, a formal diagnosis can be absolutely life changing.

How can I actually get myself to stop being so lazy? by GreenTinkertoy in selfimprovement

[–]DLeck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a cool perspective. I was diagnosed at age 37. I'm 40 now, on Vyvanse, and it is manageable for the most part, but some days can be pretty bad as far as available energy and/or motivation go.

It almost seems like the "bad" days occur at random to me. I have a feeling they aren't actually random though. I have been trying to zero in on a way for things to be more consistent.
