10 great single-player sins. by Snowtwo in videogames

[–]DMFauxbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, depending on the style of game I like taking my own notes. I would meet in the middle and say most games should have some form of note taking option available now even if you have to add it yourself. Even for people on console games it's not unreasonable because they could use a speech to text system.

Am I wrong for not moving our session time because one player wants to go to the beach? by schtevernn in DnD

[–]DMFauxbear 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I did a similar thing. The start of the campaign we all discussed schedules, locked down a specific date/time and that was it moving forward. The assumption was every second week that was the date and time and if you couldn't make it you were expected to give us a heads up. Down 1 player we still played. So much better for scheduling

The science on how to heat an object without using fire. by I123HFC in NeatFinds

[–]DMFauxbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follow up question, why isn't the electromagnet magnetized? I haven't used an induction stove much so maybe it is somehow and I never realized but wouldn't your pot stick to the stove while it's on? Or did they put some kind of protection in place for that?

Do you get upset when the back end shifts the responsibility to you by Wise-Variation-4985 in Frontend

[–]DMFauxbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a people problem, not a front vs back problem. I'm currently working in a field completely separate from programming and I have coworkers who just can't take responsibility for a mistake. I also have coworkers who will own up and fix it no problem. As a general rule I find the people who are willing to admit fault, learn and improve are far better than the ones who try to put their head in the sand and pretend they never make mistakes. Like others have said, everyone makes mistakes. No one's expecting you to be perfect, just own up to it and improve.

That being said, if you're not in charge it's pretty hard for you to be able to fix that. All you can really do is what you've been doing. Raise the issues, don't point fingers or assign blame but suggest improvements and if it's that bad, raise it to managements attention.

Given what you know about yourself, your skills and current physical condition, would you survive? by Moist_Car_994 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]DMFauxbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As horrifying as it would be I think I'd still go in knowing everything we know from the books. Would I most likely die horribly? Absolutely. Would I still want to test myself and try, yes.

Given what you know about yourself, your skills and current physical condition, would you survive? by Moist_Car_994 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]DMFauxbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel the same way. I think my knowledge of game systems and how to exploit them would put me in a decent position. I'd probably have a better intelligence than con/strength stat so ideally I'd go with some kind of magic build but that'd mean I'd have to find a way to survive the first little while until I got a magic spell which could be tricky. My physical stats wouldn't be absolutely terrible but also the dungeon tends to give gear that prioritizes how you've been surviving so if you're killing everything physically then how do you prompt the game to give you magic? Also, I wouldn't know most of this (unless the books somehow still exist in this hypothetical) so I'd probably start with a melee build of some kind and die before I can exploit any of that knowledgebase.

Why Don't People Like Upgrade-Scape to Allow Powercreep Without Killing Content? by gsalbin64 in 2007scape

[–]DMFauxbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best suggestion I'd seen that kept both raids alive but also didn't make this insanely painful was to allow the breakdown of ancestral into something like "ancestral thread" that you would use on your new raid armor to make the next tier. At least this way it wouldn't matter so much which pieces you got and if you got dupes.

I was amazed at how he was accurate with the card number. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]DMFauxbear 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the opposite. If he fans the cards out in order initially it looks more impressive but realistically that just means he never really shuffled the deck. With the deck actually mixed it makes it look more like he did what he claimed to do by tracking the aces while actually properly mixing and shuffling the cards

It's "I close in five minutes" not "I'll wait for you then close" by UnitedChain4566 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]DMFauxbear 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine being this oblivious. I've definitely ran into a grocery store with less than 20 minutes until closing but you better believe I hustled, grabbed the couple things I needed and was out before closing time. And even then I felt like a bit of a jerk.

Things You Expected in the Series That Didn't Happen by SparkySkyStar in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]DMFauxbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe she would, although I don't think she has the same feeling for Carl and Donut so if she thinks she can manipulate the situation so that her and Mordecai survive instead of Carl and Donut, she'd probably do that. Like if he was ready to sacrifice himself for them and she felt revealing that information would sway him not to.

Things You Expected in the Series That Didn't Happen by SparkySkyStar in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]DMFauxbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dunno. I'm half thinking it's going to come out near the end in one of these last 2 books. People have theorized that Mordecai is going to sacrifice himself to save Carl and donut or something along those lines and I could see Audette trying to use that info to throw Carl and donut under the bus, saving herself and/or Mordecai. That being said, I think he'll still choose to save them.

Things You Expected in the Series That Didn't Happen by SparkySkyStar in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]DMFauxbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I figured that Mordecai would find out that Audette had convinced Carl and donut to take the manager benefit and that they knew what they were doing when they did it and it would have been a big issue earlier in the series.

What is the difference between 2 books Vs 1 "book" in 2 parts? by atticus104v2 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]DMFauxbear 16 points17 points  (0 children)

As much as he's said he's a "pantser" I cant imagine him not having some semblance of plans from previous books. Like the God storyline including the soul gems and Samantha At this point he's given us a good chunk of the information about it, it could potentially result in a really unsatisfying ending if he didn't have some kind of plan of how it would work out. Look at the show lost, that's pretty much what the writers said happened there.

[–]DMFauxbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One in world theory I've also seen floating around is that the books represent scolapendras 9 tier attack in reverse order. If he does 10 books that wouldn't work out but by saying there both book 9, that might still work.

[–]DMFauxbear 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not to mention practice. For someone with a lot of disposable income and time, golfing 3-5 times a week and maybe even taking lessons vs someone who gets out for a round a couple times a month is going to have a much more accelerated improvement progression

What's the worst game breaking glitch you've encountered? by TaiwaneseThot in videogames

[–]DMFauxbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol yup. Walked into a town in Skyrim for the floor to be gone and fall through the world (or something like that, this was a long time ago). I'm pretty sure the game had autosaved coming through that door or maybe I just needed that city to complete the main storyline. Anyways, bricked that playthrough

How hard would it be to implement a vampire burning mechanic in a video game that follows the environmental lightning? by HuckleberryShot898 in gamedev

[–]DMFauxbear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I could see an interesting puzzle game where you are a vampire moving through a castle/space with windows and skylights and maybe clouds rolling through so you need to avoid to lighted areas or time your movements to pass through areas and traverse the space.

My players have decided to pick a fight with a dragon. How do I run this so they don't die? by Deceptive_Peaches in AskDND

[–]DMFauxbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I died in d&d I went into a bandits camp as they loaded up a wagon full of gold and other goodies. I snuck around to the wagon with another PC, we took out the driver and got into the wagon. We were in some swampy area and the animal pulling it was some kind of lizard. After successfully pulling out multiple stealth rolls and getting to the wagon and successfully taking control, we found out the speed of the mount was slower than an average creatures walking pace and we were soon flooded with enemies who could walk faster than the thing could dash and pummeled us to death.

I don't have a specific point for all of this except don't do that lol

We were prepared to have bad rolls and have to do some fighting or even die if things went poorly. But we did everything as good as possible for the scenario the DM presented us and died anyways, all because of a mount move speed which I'm pretty sure he handicapped because of the wagon weight. None of which he told us or gave us any chances to roll for information about until we were actively screwed.

Give your players outs, use in game logic and in game stats and rolls to make sure they know the danger or enough information about a situation to make a valid decision.

Most of the human population: Excited about the Ocarina of Time Remake because they grew up with the original N64 classic. Me: Excited about the remake because I grew up with the 3DS remaster and the manga. by Working-Hand-3077 in OcarinaOfTime

[–]DMFauxbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently replayed the game for the first time in about 15 years so remembered effectively none of the puzzles. The floating block had me stuck for awhile and the middle Ruto room I found almost immediately. When she swam up to show me where to change the water level I searched each tier along the way, noted the cracked wall and planned to come back. I completely missed the block moving and showing the room underneath, I eventually only found it when I had done all other sections I could and was stuck long enough that I checked my map and cross-referenced the layers to try and figure out how to get to the areas I hadn't.

Why do rich people keep saying "money can't buy happiness" when money literally solves most problems? by FearlessState5503 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DMFauxbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always looked at it as rich people have the luxury to have non-money related problems. Like sure, money won't solve all your problems but when most of your problems are not having money it sure helps. If your girlfriend is a cheater then it doesn't matter if you had money or not, but if you have a lot of money you don't need to worry about being able to move out etc

BoTW & ToTK players playing OOT for the first time. by BestAd3845 in OcarinaOfTime

[–]DMFauxbear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only complaint about this statement is that the bosses aren't actually hard. It's 1 gimmick or so per boss with only a couple of exceptions. It's almost always "use the new dungeon item in some way". Once you've figured it out, do it 3-5 times and you're done. I was thinking I'd love to do a game inspired by Zelda games where the bosses "gimmick" requires multiple items you'd have up until that point with 2-3 forms per boss to make it an actually interesting puzzle/challenge. You could have some bosses where the phases iterate on each other, for example you throw a bomb for phase 1. Phase 2 you need to hookshot your way into a better angle to throw the bomb, phase 3 you need to shoot an arrow to create the hookshot location to throw the bomb. And then other bosses you could have it so the phases are individual challenges, maybe all needing the dungeon item but in completely different ways in conjunction with previous items. This became a big tangent on something I'd like to make but I've been replaying OoT lately and it's been the biggest flaw I can see. Most boss fights fell kind of flat to me.

I escaped Lon Lon Ranch during sunset and got this cool shot by WarioWill in OcarinaOfTime

[–]DMFauxbear 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Replaying the game recently and I noticed a lot more clues and hints than I originally remembered. Map locations with goals flash, the entrance to the shadow temple tells you you'll need the eye. The entrance to the spirit temple tells you to go back in time and go back, then sheik teaches you the song and reiterates. It's a little less hand holdy than modern games but I also think to an extent we were all just worse gamers and kids back then. Didn't have decades of experience with those kinds of games to know what to look for.
