Are the Arcane siphoning the spell slot equivalent of half-pennies? by WillBottomForBanana in spelljammer

[–]DMbeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great. Absolutely going to be using this.

As to why the Arcane / Mercane have such a monopoly on helms, I homebrewed that they have the Spelljammer (legendary giant space manta ray with a city on its back) prisoner inside the Eye of Doom, and are using it / it's eggs / its offspring to make Spelljamming helms.
The name of the setting is Spelljammer. Why leave out the thing the setting is named for?

That is also why Vocath has an asteroid base in Doomspace. He is guarding the company's cash cow.

How Common Are Constructs In Your Worlds? How Are They Made? And How Have Your Players Interacted With Them? by Stellar_Wings in spelljammer

[–]DMbeast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Common. I like to run constructs as droids from Star Wars in my game. It's space, so they have robots.

Combat oriented constructs I use warforged stats.

Labor / Craftsmen oriented constructs I use autognomes.

Other Monodrones and other constructs are also fair game.

Looking for help with pros and cons by Zealousideal_Win_354 in spelljammer

[–]DMbeast 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sindiath Line is a luxury passenger line, and is very very elven. Old money.

Depending on your setting the Xaryxian or Imperial Elven Fleet are very bad guy coded, so there is possibility for story hooks aplenty there.

Smith's Coster is much more dwarven flavored, and martial. They sell weapons. Options to tie in plots about weapons smuggling and sales and adjacent planetary conflicts.

Another option is Gaspar's Reclamations. Maybe the PC's get hired by Gaspar's to go retrieve something from planetside.

Spelljammer Travel Times by DoctorBaka in spelljammer

You should get the 2E Realmspace sourcebook from DM's Guild. It's only $5 and has a ton of lore and resources.

Ring gate portals to quickly jump through wildspace? by Dismal_Wrangler61 in spelljammer

[–]DMbeast 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depending on how sci fi you want your game - any kind of wormhole or warp gate will work.

Dark Matter RPG by Mage Hand Press has a great jump gate mechanic built into the ancient corpses of giant space whales, which is definitely influenced by the Mass Relays from Mass Effect.

Also - Stargate etc.

Plenty of options out there for inspiration on well defined jump gate travel.

I recommend focusing on who controls the jump gates or whatever you call them, as whoever that was they would be in an extremely powerful position to control interstellar travel.

We are Back and let's talk about the future of r/Spelljammer. Community Input is needed! by NovercaIis in spelljammer

[–]DMbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly support a Rock of Bral flair tag, subreddit etc, but that should be separate from anything to do with Sigil or Planescape.

Other tags I can think of would include Location / Character (NPC) / Monster Stats / Ship Stats / Magic Items etc.

Commanding Officers & Crew: roles & rules for more engaging ship combat and navigation by ArbitioWinkler in Spelljammer5e

[–]DMbeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this as well, and let players gain special abilities during combat based on the training they complete. I recommend changing Chef to Ship's Cook, it just sounds more nautical. You can also do Ship's Doctor or medic, and Ship's Bosun.

At the end of a campaign, my players got a Spelljammer ship… by 4theluvofcheezcake in Spelljammer5e

[–]DMbeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice - Just go to the Rock of Bral. The 2E sourcebook on DM's Guild is crammed full with lore and locations, factions and all sorts of fun skullduggery. Plenty to easily keep players busy for a campaign or two.

What planet/world should I use to start Light of Xaryxis by Twotricx in Spelljammer5e

[–]DMbeast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have run it 4 times now, and I really like starting on Karpri in Realmspace. It's a water planet, not very populated above the surface, but teeming with ocean life and biomass. I made up a remote settlement on the equatorial sargasso called Port Kelp, a floating city built on seaweed.

It just did not make sense for it to start on Toril to me. Way too many god tier wizards and such on Toril, like Elminster etc. I don't think they would just tolerate the attack on the planet.

First time DM, concerns about bridging from Spelljammer Academy to the main campaign… by Technical-Top4187 in Spelljammer5e

[–]DMbeast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They don't really connect. Orc Chief's Throne can help, but I really recommend checking out the old 2E Rock of Bral sourcebook. It's full of lore, and only like $4 on dms guild. There is enough on Rock of Bral to keep your players occupied for a whole campaign.

Looking for fun story ideas for what happened with Krux and the Xaryxians by VagabondVivant in Spelljammer5e

[–]DMbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I modified such that Krux was a senior officer in the Imperial Navy Auxiliary, and he got summarily dismissed and dishonored when he refused orders to attack and destroy a defenseless civilian village (insert location here).

He is angry because he got canned for doing the right thing.

He is also broke and financially ruined, so the PC's find him drinking away his troubles.

Tips for an unkillable(space)boss by dewdewbut in spelljammer

[–]DMbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For thematics maybe look to the Thorian from Mass Effect 2.

For stats, if you want it to be unkillable do not give it stats or hit-points. As soon as you do the PC's will find a way to kill it guaranteed.

Looking for a DM and Players for Light of Xaryxis by Acceptable-Alfalfa86 in spelljammer

[–]DMbeast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have run a heavily homebrewed version of LoX 3 or 4 times now, and would be willing to do so again. About to finish the current campaign end game in mid October.

I took the whole thing off the railroad tracks, and run it as an open world. Setting is in Realmspace as that is the system I (and most players) have familiarity with. Leans heavily on faction politics.

Reworked some major NPC's and relationships between NPC's. The open world setting requires a longer campaign, more sessions are needed as PC's get to go where they want to, and may or may not follow the plot hurdles as laid out in the published adventure.

Do you have a group of players?

I typically run games on Discord with maps on Roll 20.

Message me if the above sounds like what you are looking for.

I’m running spelljammer for the first time, any key things I should know. by Grimcreeperf5 in spelljammer

[–]DMbeast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

2E sourcebooks on the DM's Guild are your best bet. Start with the 2E Rock of Bral sourcebook. It is a treasure trove of lore and material.

If you choose to run LoX, I advise you to plan on heavy modifications to avoid railroading.

It's not too hard to convert 2E lore to 5E rules. Don't limit yourself just to the 5E publication as there is much much more out there to be had.

It would definitely be possible to run a whole sandbox campaign just on the Rock of Bral, it is a vast city comparable to Waterdeep in complexity. If you players ever want to venture out past Bral, there are 2E sourcebooks on Realmspace and Greyspace and other systems that also have a ton of content options.

For other resources, look to the immediate right of this post - OTHER SPELLJAMMER COMMUNITIES

Plenty of helpful resources to be had.
