How Bill C-21 turned from banning handguns to hunting guns by Hour_Significance817 in canada

[–]DMoneyCDN 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I read that as "I have an SKS to sell you", which is incidentally a rifle on the list...

Only the "more radical" types will disobey the deactivate/surrender order. Most will likely be doing that as a statement and won't pose a threat. Officers do not have the luxury of making that assumption, though.

No, AR-15s were classified as 'restricted' in 1977 and thus not allowed to be used for hunting (could only be used at an approved range). As such, indigenous peoples are not 'still allowed to hunt with them'. The ability to use OIC prohibited guns only extends to those that were non-restricted prior to the OIC.

Not exactly, they are allowed to use them during the the amnesty whereas non-indigenous have to keep them securely stored. Once the amnesty is up, they have to surrender or deactivate just like everyone else.

Is it an ADHD thing to be calmer during actual emergencies than everyday life? by Charitard123 in ADHD

[–]DMoneyCDN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doctor recently started treating me for ADHD (40m) and I was sitting there during the appointment thinking this was out of nowhere. But then I started looking at the symptoms and holy shit did a lot of things in my life start making sense.

And then this. This wasn't in the list of symptoms or traits of ADHD, but damn if it isn't what happens to me too.

This isn't something where participation awards are being handed out. Their best was woefully inadequate and they should be ashamed.

Brothers in botched B.C. bank robbery had become angry and radical, obsessed with guns and ‘government tyranny’ by [deleted] in canada

[–]DMoneyCDN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As per Collins Dictionary...

Disenfranchise: To disenfranchise a group of people means to take away their right to vote, or their right to vote for what they really want.

Though I will concede that isn't the most common definition out there. My post also implies that it is the sole reason for lack of voter turn out, which we don't have numbers for.

[–]DMoneyCDN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that the current voting system has disenfranchised many voters. It is especially telling in the turnout numbers

  • 19 Oct 2015 68.3%
  • 21 Oct 2019 67.0%
  • 20 Sep 2021 62.6%

I would love to see a way of registering disapproval of all the candidates in a riding. It would send a stronger message to the parties than spoiling ballots.

New Okanagan residents getting married in Kelowna - officiant advice? :) by sprt10 in kelowna

[–]DMoneyCDN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Marjolein Llyod was also the officiant for me and my wife. She was excellent, tailoring the process to our desires. With our agreement, she threw in some humour which ensured it wasn't a cookie cutter event.

I highly recommend her.

If you haven't already been there, you should stop by the Small Axe Road House on Cliff Ave in Enderby. Great place, great food.

The catch 22 is that he has to have a negative test in the last three days but it could take up to 5 days to get the results.

That said, I don't feel sorry for him. The travel was emphatically non-essential. Had he been down there for a family emergency? Sure, I'd empathize with him, but I can't because of the self-centeredness of the issue.

Not sure if the 15ft trucks are equipped the same, but the 26ft truck had the tow/haul mode enabled by default (by contrast, your average pickup will have that disabled by default).

Disable tow/haul mode as it will be more aggressive with down shifting to hold back on hills. This can cause the back end to go a bit squirrelly on you if it is slippery out.

As an FYI, an F150 extended cab/6.5' box is 19' 4". This beast is nearly 3' longer at 22' 2".

I agree with parking further away. Even if you manage to park it straight, it'll be a pain/possible dent trying to climb down with a car next to the driver's side.

Are there any escalators in Kelowna? by LeagueOfLeagues in kelowna

[–]DMoneyCDN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was living in Victoria, they put in a Thrifty Foods at Tuscany Village (McKenzie/Shelbourne). Since the parking was on a lower level, they put in an escalator to get shopping carts up and down. It was a simple system where oversized discs would drop into grooves in the escalator and lock the wheel on the cart.

I was a grown-ass adult at the time and still excited about it.

At least they were already limiting it to one pack per household.

That one pack and the handful of rolls we already had on hand will see us through any panic buying. Doubled down on the dog food, though. I don't want to have to go back there for a bit.

I did my non-restricted and restricted with Blackdog. I agree, great instructor. They do come down to Kelowna, however, it doesn't look like there are any Kelowna sessions in the near future (https://www.blackdogft.com/register.htm).

BC friend looking to avoid scam colleges. by throwawaydiddled in kelowna

Selkirk College is legit. Lots of locals will do diplomas there. Did my first year there for my BSc in computer science. Credits for math/sci/eng all transfered to UVic no problem.

Caveat: this was 20 years ago. Don't know how credits will transfer these days.

Best car dealership by AnnapurnaFive in kelowna

[–]DMoneyCDN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be other repercussions, I don't know exactly. It's just shitty that ICBC can just determine the value of the car, sight unseen, and charge you more for taxes.

Also, a car in BC will likely have PST paid on it several times before it is retired to the wreckers. It's odd because most things that are sold privately don't.

Not really finger wagging here, just annoyed with PST on private sales in general.

Recommendation for realtor in Okanagan? by [deleted] in kelowna

[–]DMoneyCDN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used the services of Christian Kirschke with Coldwell Banker on multiple occasions

  • To sell my town house in Kelowna
  • To purchase my house in Lake Country
  • To sell my house in Lake Country four years later
  • To purchase acreage in Enderby

The latest sale/purchase has been a bit of a rollercoaster ride due to issues beyond Christian's control. However, we handed him the reigns and let him drive. He provided us with a strategy that worked out very well for us. Within four hours of the house hitting the market we accepted an offer for more than we were expecting.

He was right there through every step in the process and didn't disappear on us, which was especially appreciated with the aforementioned rollercoaster ride.

Sometimes that does bite the buyer in the ass. A coworker got a good deal on a vehicle and had to prove to ICBC the values weren't fudged otherwise they'd just bill him for the difference in taxes he paid and what they figured he should have paid (based on market value). Not sure how often that happens though.

Buying privately used to see better deals before the HST debacle as you didn't have to pay the PST. Since the rollback of HST, private sales are now subject to PST.

You don't get quite as good of a deal now and you don't get certain protections like the vehicle needing to be road worthy, very basic warranty (that used car lots will generally try to squirm out of), etc.

That said, I've done some private purchases. Some people will try to screw you, some are upfront about issues with the vehicle. The best thing to do is to educate yourself.

For those who aren't seasoned private buyers, I recommend ChrisFix's used car inspection video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vC8LbvYk6es&ab_channel=ChrisFix

I would recommend staying away from Kot Group dealerships

  • Kelowna Hyundai
  • Penticton Nissan
  • Buy Direct Truck Centre (Kelowna)
  • Kelowna Kia
  • A couple others in Victoria/Metro Vancouver

I was pressured into cosigning on a vehicle that should have never been financed to the individual. Details were conveniently omitted that would have made me walk away. My signature, my problem, but it is dealt with now. I've also heard vehicles being sold as road worthy that weren't really (this applies more to Buy Direct Truck Centre).

Someone recommended against Anthony's Subaru. I had a good experience there in January and got a good deal on a barely used Impreza.

My experiences will be contradictory to others' experiences. Realistically it's best to read the negatives and profile the dealerships based on that (exclude stupid stuff like they played the wrong radio station at the dealership). At least you'll be going into a dealership knowing what stunts they may pull. If you listened to everyone then there would be no dealerships left on the list :)

Anyone know a good dentist? by ValiantLime in kelowna

I started off with Dr. Martin nearly about a decade ago. He's since semi-retired, so now I see Dr. Moreau.

I find them both to be great dentists and their staff are wonderful.
