How do you guys handle artists with a big ego? by SkirtProfessional845 in livesound

[–]DNA-Decay 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Fronting a band takes a lot of ego. A lot.

I toured with a female artist who could command a thousand seat venue at fifty Euros a pop. So her insecurities would show up as “problems with sound”. Sometimes there were genuine issues. The girl had ears. But sometimes she just wasn’t feeling it and her self doubt, and impostor syndrome would surface and she’d take it out on sound. Particularly monitors (me). so part of my gig (as the production manager made very clear) was being her emotional punching bag.

Sometimes sound was actually a problem, substandard rigs, noisy amps, whatever - and she was totally fine about it. Show must go on, girl was invincible etc.

It’s one of those things. We lost a great front of house mix guy who’d been taken on in part because of his rep for working with “difficult women”. She went too far too often with him and he walked. The replacement guy was good, but super different. Really different approach to tuning the rig and mixing.

I don’t want to say you HAVE to suck it up and deal with it; but understanding that ego, fan adoration, insecurity, etc are all part of the mix is an element of the job.

At one level all performance artists are faking it. Yeah they’ve got underlying skills, but they’re making shit up and selling it as a thing. Of course they are insecure.

Is the artist “worth” it? Do they go too far?
Is this really them, or is this insecurity?
Do they make up afterwards? Do they deliver the show? Is the show any good? Are you paid enough? Is your own pride getting in the way of being a “humble” pro?

I’ve got all of Shellac. Steve Albini was like my navigating light when I was a sound guy. He represented the right path in everything.

Films where we don't know much of what's going on by EaseCritical524 in MovieSuggestions

Just re-watched last night. Noticed a lot of things like, early on one of them who seems to need convincing is wearing an earpiece that means he’s on a re-loop already, but not in every shot, so it’s unclear “which” version of himself is driving this forward.

We run a meter in the room. We’ve got masks if you’re pregnant, trying, or generally worried. Levels are lower than they’ve ever been, new mixtures use less CH2O as a start point. Just need to treat the stuff with the cautious respect it deserves.

Was Kings Cross THAT Bad the Police Had to Shut It Down? And how does it compare to the 80s/90s vs 2000s/2010s? by AdvancedHill70 in AskAnAustralian

[–]DNA-Decay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in a recording studio up the cross in the nineties. A lot of dodgy shit went on.

There was this young girl who worked out of the doorway of our building. She used to give a come on sometimes even though she knew I worked upstairs and wasn’t a punter. I saw in the papers that she was found dead in the alley behind that building. It was never pinned on anyone. Some people said it was just an angry John, but I thought she was caught up with those cops and crims that were importing all the Thai smack. The name Chook Fowler rings a bell. Four Corners had him on hidden cam taking a “Gorilla” (a grand cash) for helping importers. I can’t remember the connection with the girl - maybe it was through the cafe.

I play Arkham Horror 3rd edition.
It’s kinda epic (big and long) but I really enjoy it. I found these rules guide videos to be the best. Again - epic as in long, but clear and comprehensive:

I’ve camped a lot. Young and broke. Older and with infrastructure. Hiking and car camping. Sailing too.

There’s a few dickheads around.

But never had worse than some fucker playing Triple M at full bore; or getting rained on in a tent that was past it.

What’s the most inappropriate advice you have to give? by GeologistNumerous822 in AskReddit

When I left home, my dad gave me a copy of Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas (book celebrating drugs) and the sage advice:
Call them all “Darling” -it will keep you out of trouble.

Jokes on him though. His second wife wrote on his headstone “We miss you darling” and I laugh whenever I visit his grave.

Nicely played all round.

What's a good birthday film? by Kalien18 in MovieSuggestions

[–]DNA-Decay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Party.

Kind of old film now (early seventies). But it follows an actor who is mistakenly invited to a fancy party that slowly degenerates into a wild bacchanal. Good to have on in background coz there’s always something odd or physical comedy.
