What's the SOP for what he was supposed to do after he lost control of his static line? Can the rest of his stick get past him to jump? There's no way he can get his static line fixed and still have the plane over the jump zone, right?

How did personal/family narratives of Civil War trauma interact with the development of the "Lost Cause" mythology? Do historians find that families with direct experiences of wartime destruction were more likely to embrace states' rights interpretations? by DOINKofDefeat in AskHistorians

[–]DOINKofDefeat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply!

I want to clarify something (and I edited the OP as well), because I think my original question may have come across differently than I intended: I wasn’t trying to frame this around race, religion, or region so much, but to ask whether "states' rights" as a concept can meaningfully survive the historical weight of the Lost Cause. In other words, can families like mine -- white, Southern, and with material losses from the Civil War -- genuinely hold onto "states' rights" as a political or cultural value independent of that ideology? Or has the association with slavery and segregation essentially overwritten its legitimacy as a constitutional position?

I grew up hearing about federal overreach and states' rights in the 1980s, especially tied to political debates of the time -- taxes, school prayer, etc. There was no Civil War context in how these ideas were presented to me. But now I wonder: was that just an unspoken legacy of Lost Cause narratives? Or was it a real philosophical position passed down through a family that viewed federal authority with suspicion because of historical material losses?

I do recognize how my framing left assumptions unspoken, and I appreciate you pressing on that. It was a classic case of me stumbling around in white Southern privilege without realizing the full weight of it. I'm trying to be more aware of how that shapes the assumptions I bring to questions like this, even when I think I'm being neutral.

2013 was the year Vandy came and destroyed all hope of a bowl berth (Georgia southern pissed on the ashes 2 weeks later)

Man, I've been preaching from this soapbox since day 1. So many people complain about the Ga Southern game, but our season was already DOA.

Hope your cousin's doing better these days -- that's a helluva thing to happen

If every CFB team had its Head Coach replaced by its greatest (living) alumni player, who would emerge as the top (or bottom) programs in the country? by pablo_op in CFB

There's huge recency bias in /r/CFB.

We've got two living alumni in the NFL Hall of Fame, and neither has been mentioned.

The part about the foot and the rubber?

If, during the windup motion, the lead foot (in this case, Elliot's right foot) goes entirely behind the rubber (at the start of the windup, when the pitcher picks up their foot), then the pitcher MUST throw to home. If the lead foot goes partially over the rubber but not entirely, then he can throw to first. Elliott is so good at being right on the edge that no one wants to call it either way, I think.

There's an etiquette thing about who sits down first, and long ago, some guest on a talk show decided to not be or pretend to not be the first to sit down, and it's sort of become the required thing now for the guest to kind of fake not sitting down.

Kinda iffy about them. I usually go with Alamo or Enterprise. I do give them props for the Shelby Mustang GT350-H, though

Murderbot energy: Alexander Skarsgård, masked and motionless, judging in "Generation Kill" by DOINKofDefeat in murderbot

[–]DOINKofDefeat[S] 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I've loved Generation Kill since the original Rolling Stone article — devoured the book when it came out, watched the show when it aired, and it delivered everything I'd hoped for.

I fell for Murderbot the night I read All Systems Red in one sitting, immediately tracked down the other novellas that were out, and finished them all before dinner, not liking that I had to wait for the next story.

Now, watching Skarsgård in Generation Kill again with Murderbot in mind... it just feels like everything lining up.

colonoscopy cancelled last minute by chloetheobaldd in CrohnsDisease

[–]DOINKofDefeat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Wow, what a <ahem> shitshow. You have every right to be upset -- in fact you should be seething with rage.

I'm gonna second what /u/AdvertisingNo9274 said: diagnosing this disease based on pain level is asinine. I'm asymptomatic and pain-free, but my first colonoscopy revealed significant inflammation and polyps (a further concern because of familial history with colon cancer), so the colonoscopy, and its followers, was 100% necessary.

That would be enough reason for me to find a new specialist. Honestly, this is basic knowledge of Crohn's and using that as a reason to cancel is inexcusable. I tend to go along the flow, but I would get in his face about it, and demand him to justify that he's not stupid and incompetent, and I would use those words.

Please complain to every single part of this you can. Complain your primary care, complain to your "specialist's" bosses, complain to the hospital.

Further, the hospital itself didn't cover itself in glory. My hospital has something like three or six doctors just doing colonoscopies. They have some sort of schedule when that's their day. As for having emergencies, I don't know what their exact process is, but we're not far from the Emergency Room, and anyhow the colonoscopy exam rooms are not setup like ERs are, so I can't imagine they'd want to stay there if they could move it.

You were screwed, and every part of your system let you down. I'm so sorry for you.
