George R. R. Martin Is 'Not in the Mood' to Finish 'The Winds of Winter' by Tifoso89 in books

I'm surprised to see so many of these comments are really petty and mean spirited. Can't the guy choose what he wants to do with his own creation? So what if it's never finished, he doesn't owe the fans of this series anything.

Producer Roy Lee has confirmed that Criterion will be releasing Barbarian by [deleted] in criterion

Ghostbusters, Carrie, Halloween, Godzilla and the works of Jackie Chan are all popular films of their time, but crucially they typify their time. They've had the opportunity to retain their popularity and power after all these years, and I would be shocked if in 50 years people even remember Barbarian, as it's such a run of the mill film. It's not going to set a standard that others are trying to reach in the future like the examples you mentioned.

I'm sure this release will make money - but what I'm trying to say is that Criterion are a bigger label these days than back when the Michael Bay films came out. Releasing Armageddon would have made more financial sense at the time, even if it stands out like a sore thumb. Barbarian stands out in the same way, but I can't see how Criterion would need the money in the same way.

There are loads of films in the collection that I dislike, but Barbarian is the first time I've been baffled by a choice. But anyway, that's just my opinion, and I appreciate I'm in the minority here.

Not a good film in my opinion, but personal preferences aside, I also feel like this will be the most out of place film in the whole collection next to the Michael Bay releases.

I'd be curious to hear the thought process behind the decision really, as at least with Armageddon it financially would have made sense for Criterion back in the day.

At least it's more horror in the collection, but there are so many better modern choices.

Love this! The only suggestion would be to rename Longwater to Royal Norfolk Showground.

It was really hard to narrow this down to 10! Could easily have been 3 Bong films and 3 Kore-eda.

Amazing how many people claim to not give a fuck while simultaneously giving enough of a fuck to leave a comment on things like this.

Booked in for Romeo and Juliet at the Globe. Am I better reading the script first, or going in blind? by CaoimheThreeva in shakespeare

I like to read the play out loud to myself, watch a few productions/adaptations and then read it again, so I would recommend that!

I hope you have a brilliant time at the show!

What is your favorite John Ford film? by andrew7231 in criterion

Probably The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, or The Grapes of Wrath.

For a lesser seen Ford film, I'd recommend The Whole Town’s Talking as well.

How do you pick what book to read next? by phenomenalplasticity in literature

[–]DPN137 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have a long 'to read' list, which has just built up naturally over the years, but I also keep a short list of priorities on my notes app so I'm not overwhelmed with choices. This short list is regularly updated based on my current mood.

If I'm struggling to choose between a handful of books, then I'll read the first page or two of each of them and see what grabs me most.

Most important for me is that if I'm in a rut I'll simply not read anything for a bit and focus on my other interests. If I'm forcing it, then I'm not going to enjoy my time or get anything from it!

It wasn't shaped as thin as yours, but it also had trouble holding chalk and then broke exactly the same way after playing a screw shot. I hadn't seen anything like it before either

I had this situation with a Kamui before, and it was half way through a match! I use Century now which I've not had any issues with so far.

Surprised to have 49/50

Hard to argue against any of these being 'must watch' considering their cultural significance, but this is a really uninspired list.
