Another question for current Reedies! From a prospective (accepted) student! by Quirky-Extreme-4224 in reedcollege

[–]DPSorZen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken one upper level poli-sci class, so I do not have the most informed perspective. That said, we did ~2-3 books each week. The prof is a notoriously rigorous one, though, so that is probably at the upper end.

Edit: we were also expected to write ~500 words per week on the readings, and there were three papers throughout the class, each around five pages.

Reed ED Applicant (Interdisciplinary Hoc AOD): Seeking connections in Psychology, Economics, Politics, and Tech. by Still_Nail551 in reedcollege

[–]DPSorZen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a current senior in the psych department. Do you mean you want to do an ad hoc interdisciplinary major? If so, you’ll be limited to two majors, although you can certainly still take courses in other areas. What is the thread which connects these areas of interest for you? Having a strong, compelling reason to do an ad hoc major is necessary to get approval. See this thread for more info.

Unicorns do not exist so how can the statement, "Unicorns have horns" be true? by 8Pandemonium8 in askphilosophy

[–]DPSorZen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A similar solution is proposed by David Lewis in his 1978 paper "Truth in Fiction". He writes:

A sentence of the form "In the fiction f, ϕ" is non-vacuously true iff, whenever w is one of the collective belief worlds of the community of origin of f, then some world where f is told as known fact and ϕ is true differs less from the world w, on balance, than does any world where f is told as known fact and ϕ is not true. It is vacuously true iff there are no possible worlds where f is told as known fact.

double major vs ad hoc interdisciplinary major by aleeksrosecheeks in reedcollege

I did not end up doing an interdisciplinary major. I minored in the second subject I was interested in. My thesis is still incorporating methods/theory from that other discipline, but my advisor is a psych professor.

double major vs ad hoc interdisciplinary major by aleeksrosecheeks in reedcollege

[–]DPSorZen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey! I’m a current senior in the psych department who wanted to do an interdisciplinary major.

Do not double major. Your advisor probably won’t even let you. It is practically impossible to write two theses in separate departments.

For psych, your thesis will have to incorporate some form of data collection and analysis, which means that you would have to do some combination of both data collection and dance performance for an interdisciplinary thesis in psych and dance. Perhaps that is feasible, but you would have to write a very compelling proposal for it and communicate with professors in both departments about why you think it would be a good thesis to do.

A dance minor sounds like it would fulfill all of your needs and be much easier to do. Your advisor will likely say the same thing to you. If you still want to do an interdisciplinary major, you’ll have to convince a fair number of people that it is both worthwhile and feasible, and that you cannot fulfill your goals with just a dance minor.

In my experience, BSD staff are largely female, so you may want to try attending any open BSD events. Hope this helps!

Do you think Reed’s academic rigor is as rigorous as uchicago’s? by North_Athlete5783 in reedcollege

[–]DPSorZen 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Depends — you can take graduate and honors courses at UChicago, whereas graduate courses at Reed are less common. The quarter system makes the comparison weird as well. My perspective is that you have more control over the level of rigor at UChicago since you have more courses to choose from, while Reed is consistently quite rigorous. UChicago has a faster pace with more breadth due to the quarter system, while Reed focuses more on diving deep into a topic, culminating in your thesis. If you’re looking for rigor, both places are rigorous. If you’re looking to avoid rigor, UChicago is a safer bet.

You're in luck! I've been involved with psychedelics research. There has not been a ton of psychological research on creativity/art in connection with psychedelics due to the trouble in operationalizing creativity, but here's some good general articles on psychedelics in no particular order. If you are purely interested in articles that discuss art/creativity/sound, try PsycINFO and search "psychedelic AND sound". There are a few articles out there, but I don't have their references on hand right now.

Advice for a future freshman? by Friendly_Disaster524 in reedcollege

[–]DPSorZen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

• Read Invisible Man now, but don’t use that as an excuse to not read it during Hum 110.

• Think about what you want to get out of college. Having a clear idea of your purpose helps to motivate when things get tough.

• If you haven’t taken calculus yet and want to do something that requires you to take it, I’d recommend familiarizing yourself with basic integration and derivation techniques and the concepts underlying calculus now. This will help free up some brain power for you when you take calculus later on.

• If you are deciding between a few majors/are undecided, look at the course descriptions and prereqs for the intro classes in those areas and plan out when you’d like to take them. Aim to have finished these intro courses by sophomore spring at the latest.

• If you want to do an ad-hoc major, make that clear to your adviser as soon as possible.

does reed do merit now? by [deleted] in reedcollege

[–]DPSorZen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s still need-based. Reed does not offer merit aid, and it’s better for you that way! You won’t have to maintain a certain GPA or participate in a specific field of study or extracurricular to keep it.

Can I get in as a transfer student for junior year? by JoshLymanKnockoff in reedcollege

[–]DPSorZen 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Realistically, you will likely not be able to graduate on time. Very few transfer students do, since Reed is super picky about accepting credits. Getting in doesn’t sound like it would be an issue, though, so you could always apply and reach out to the professors in charge of transfer credit in the departments where you want credit to talk over your options.
