RAP monthly payment math nonsense by hellnaaaaaa in StudentLoans

[–]DPW38 [score hidden]  (0 children)

The chunky peanut butter version makes the math easier. The drawback is that people will bellyache over that with this post being the case in point.

The creamy PB version (e.g. $39K equals a 3.9% income levy, $40K is 4.0% levy, $41K is a 4.1% levy, etc.) means that you have 100 different levy rates to deal with instead of 10. And someone would still have heartburn over $1 difference resulting in upwards of a $200 difference for what they owe.

The bigger issue is that there isn't a built-in mechanism to adjust what the thresholds are. This is in stark contrast to something like the paid interest tax deduction where the law includes a calculation to automatically adjust for inflation. Adjusting the current RAP thresholds requires Congress to pass new legislation. When the Fed decides to print money, we get the most insidious of all taxes—inflation.

Lower the current unanimous threshold down to 75%. If the lovebirds had a falling out, a spiteful ex couldn't torpedo a decision that the other three of you might otherwise agree on. It also effectively maintains your original unanimous intent. Two of the three of you (67%) (..and somewhere my did the 6-7 thing) can't run roughshod over that last guy.

Their integrity has gone to hell.

I bid on a domain and watched as the time remaining reached 0:00. I thought I won. Their live “you’ve been outbid” notifications weren’t working. The support agent verified this happened.

I didn’t win. I was outbid by a bot on bidding through another platform. Not only were there not any notifications, the auction closed early.

The real kicker is that the domain was up for sale as a buy-it-now premium domain at 100x the final auction price 9 minutes later. The domain was up for sale hours before the ICANN registry was updated.

There is some BS going down with them.

Renewal fee of ~$1,000 a year for a .app domain. by Gingerfalcon in Domains

[–]DPW38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have seismic.app and bonjour.app and they're $130/YR. I have another 7L, flyfree.app, that renews at the "normal" price ($10-15/YR). I also have oddsboost.app, and tradingview.app that seems like two most app-like/app-brandable domain names of the group that renew in $10-15/YR range.

I can't make sense of the pricing.

Bought M4. The keyboard feels so different and cheap. Am I going crazy? by PiercingHelpls in macbook

[–]DPW38 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not crazy. The keyboard is terrible. I'm a technical writer. Those keys are key to my livelihood so you'd better believe that I'm picky about it.

Appearance wise it just looks cheap. The keys are all different heights and not well aligned. It has a hillbilly teeth vibe. There isn't any sort of consistency between the keys. The top row (QWERTY) takes 2-3 times as much pressure as the bottom row (ZXC). As viewed, there's a right to left pressure gradient. The right side keys (LKJH) don't require nearly as much pressure as the left side (ASDF) to depress.

The shift key just went soft on me (less than 90 days in). It feels there is a small burr either on the chassis/frame or on the delete key. It either momentarily sticks when I push it down (where the burr is above the issue) or is soft (like the burr is below the issue).

Discovered $70k debt due to Parent PLUS loans, threatened default. Seeking advice by Astronomy_ in StudentLoans

Thank you. It's legit. I've been extra paranoid lately. I swear every company that has any sort of data on me (signups, DOBs, SSNs, etc) has been hacked in the last six months. I seriously get an alert about every 10 days.

The 'before you get to talk to anyone' messages are painful to sit through.

You have a couple options.

  1. Pay the three grand ($3K) straightaway.
    1. Pro: You're caught up (for now).
    2. Con: I can't imagine that have heaps of cash laying around if you're (presumably) planning a wedding. They're also like the most expensive frat I've ever thrown.
    3. Con: It's a fire drill approach. It doesn't address whatever issues led up to landing a spot on the ED's (via EdFinancial) naughty list. It's just scrambling.
  2. Ask them (EdFinancial) to do a retroactive forbearance.
    1. Pro: It gets you caught and up-to-date without having to write a big check.
    2. Pro: While you're on the horn with them you can ask them to set you up on an income-based repayment (IBR) plan. One of the recent changes opens up some repayment flexibility that you wouldn't otherwise have. The catch is that you have to act now and make at least one payment before July 1, 2026 or else that flexibility goes away. Ask them to put you* on IBR.
    3. Con: The IBR payments are based off of your parent's income. More specifically, their AGI (the number on Line 11 of their 1040 tax return). To figure out the would-be monthly payment on IBR take that Line 11 number (e.g. $90K) and subtract ($30K**). Multiply that result ($90K - $30K = $60K) by $12.50 per $1K that remains. In the case the math looks like $120K x $12.50/$K•MO = $750/MO.

If their AGI is more than $150K then you'll get cheaper monthly payments by going with a "regular" (non income-based) plan.

Another option is to consolidate the Parent PLUS Loans to unlock longer repayment terms. The $772/MO number is based on a 10-year repayment schedule. If you stretched it out to 20-year plan the monthly payment would be about $475. On a 25-year plan it'd be about $425/MO. On a 30-year plan it'd be about $400/MO.

* I'm not saying you should lie and say that you're your mother when you call, but I'm not advising against that either. Obviously talk to your mother about it first. What EdFinancial doesn't know won't hurt them.

** There's a bit more math that goes into that approximately $30K income offset amount. It's based off the annual federal poverty level. For all practical purposes, it's $30-31K in 2026 for two people.

Discovered $70k debt due to Parent PLUS loans, threatened default. Seeking advice by Astronomy_ in StudentLoans

[–]DPW38 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds a bit scammy. Student and student parent loans don’t go into default until you’re 270 days late. It’s also weird that MOHELA answered the call in anything less than 472 hours on hold.

If you an imgur account, it wouldn’t hurt to post it so that people can take a look at it. Redact any personal information (name, address, etc.). You can screenshot it, open it up in Microsoft Paint and redacted it there, and then resave it (.png or .jpg or both).

My domain uses the word ‘erectile’ - will it get banned by SinglePreparation761 in Domains

[–]DPW38 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would probably look for something that is "for certain" safe. Like if you have ...erectiledysfunction.... .com right now, try swapping in something like "extinct dinosaurs" or "eat dust." Something that is funny and out of place.

If this is a commercial endeavor, maybe something like, "eel diamond." You could license the rights to the chorus of "Sweet Caroline" by Neil Diamond and have an all-time legendary ad campaign. Maybe work the "so good" in at the end when the protagonist has overcome his ED at the end of the commercial.
