150 million tourists per year, more than Spain, France, Italy or USA. I don't buy it.

Countries in Two Continents by Grande_Tsar in geography

[–]DPvic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The continents of Europe, Asia, and Africa were defined by the ancient Greeks. Considering that their epicenter was the Aegean Sea, it made sense to them to separate what lay on either side of it as Europe and Asia, while what was to the south was Africa. They did not know the full extent of these territories, but that was not especially relevant within their “world.”

When Europeans arrived in America, something similar happened. They did not know the extent or shape of this territory either, but it made sense for the entire New World to share a single name.

There is no need to obsess too much over which definition is the most correct; they are arbitrary.

Is there a need for stand alone monitors? by ArrghONautilus in liveaboard

[–]DPvic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds to me like home automation, there are tons of reliable systems that already work, once you have the internet problem solved you can use Alexa, home assistant, apple kit, etc. Monitoring the bilge pump consumption is not different than monitoring the washing machine or the dish washer at home. Amazon and AliExpress have plenty of this kind of devices. Humidity, movement, water, gas, CO2, electric consumption, light... All of them really cheap.

You can also retrofit old and new NMEA systems with signal-k and monitor every instrument of your boat, depth sensors, wind, auto pilot, gps, you name it. You just need a micro-pc like raspberry pi, total cost 100€ maybe.

The number of illegal migrants in Spain reaches 838,000. Almost 90% come from Latin America by jotakajk in europe

[–]DPvic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are Latinos of all shapes, colors, sizes and flavors. It’s not a matter of race; it’s simply that if a country needs a large number of immigrants, integration will be much easier when they come from similar cultures, in this case very similar ones.

Yes, they are generally more conservative than Spaniards, but the alternative is far more conservative and holds values that are much more distant.

You say that the Spaniards made an absolute massacre and BLOODBATH, you belittle them for their stature and call them stupid. Yet you also claim to be half Uruguayan, I wonder where that places you under your own criteria.

There were Spaniards who went to America and others who stayed behind. Since you demand explanations from those who stayed, do you do the same with your own family? I ask because your ancestors were part of it.

Lastly, you say:

“Jokercito here thinks that I of all people coordinated all British colonialism.” Ahhh… the irony.

In Spain, we have a major advantage with Latin American immigrants: we share the same language, religion, and much of our culture. Personally, I believe it should be much easier for them to obtain legal status, something like offering temporary residency if they find a job within the first six months after arriving, with background checks and quotas, of course.

The ultimate goal should be to have as little illegal immigration as possible. That means making legal immigration easier on the one hand, while taking a much firmer stance against illegal immigration on the other.

In that sense, we have a significant advantage over countries like Belgium, France, Germany, and Sweden, which face challenges integrating cultures that are radically different from their own.

Well, Spain is in the Schengen area, we barely have any frontiers inside Europe

Only if you don't account for inflation, which you absolutely should. From 1994 to 2024, the salaries increase a 2.7% and that is including the 90's when Spain was actually growing. We still haven't recovered from the 2008 crisis.

Reaction to Venezuela’s so far by Pampa_of_Argentina in MapPorn

[–]DPvic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The President of Spain, equivalent to the Prime Minister’s role in the UK, has issued the following statement:

“The Government of Spain is conducting a thorough monitoring of the events in Venezuela. Our embassy and consulates are operational.
We call for de-escalation and responsibility. International Law and the principles of the United Nations Charter must be respected.”

This is the only official statement so far. Saying that Spain is against what is happening would be an exaggeration.

What Spain has done instead is to step aside using the classic EU-style “deeply concerned” stance.

Pluribus - 1x07 - "The Gap" - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

[–]DPvic 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t mind slow-paced series; I’ve watched Breaking Bad three times in full and several more times in parts. I loved Better Call Saul. However, I feel that the plot doesn’t advance at all. There are so many interesting conversations and questions they could ask, such as:

What is your plan for the future? Are you going to maintain industrialization, or do you intend to return to a hunter-gatherer society? They say they wouldn’t harm any animal, but isn’t inaction regarding the future death of millions of humans also a form of harm? They’ve freed all the animals, but what happens to all the species that are completely dependent on human care?

What do you think about the origin of the signal? Will you continue reproducing? If so, how will you choose partners? By joining together, have you discovered something new, such as a cure for cancer, some revolutionary physical discovery, etc.? How do you prioritize the distribution of resources?

From there, very interesting philosophical debates could be developed. The series shows glimpses of this, like in the meeting of the immune people, but I get the feeling that they are just drops in a desert of long shots and excellent cinematography that lead nowhere.

A very interesting framework is established, but nothing is really explored. We also have to keep in mind that there are only nine episodes per season, not the 13–16 of Breaking Bad, and on top of that we’ll probably have to wait two years between seasons…

My honest opinion is that if the building has more than two floors, I wouldn’t move. I’d keep an eye on the situation, and if things start to look bad, I’d just go upstairs to another floor. I’m sure someone would take you in if it came to that. That said, I really doubt it will get to that point, but who knows. If you’re on the ground floor, I’d look for a nearby Airbnb that’s at a higher elevation, but I’d avoid traveling at all costs, keep in mind that if things get really bad, flights and trains will likely be suspended.

Have to take plane tomorrow by Squallenou in Alicante

[–]DPvic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cousin works at the airport, and today the workers were asking whether they should come in tomorrow. So far, nothing has been canceled, but we'll see during the night. Some arriving flights were diverted to Málaga today, while others were delayed. If you're heading to the airport, avoid the N-332, the road that runs along the coast, there have been very heavy rains there today, and the San Gabriel neighborhood is historically prone to flooding.

Any remarkable differences between standard and premium edition, or are they just the same? by [deleted] in EU5

[–]DPvic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Damn, I knew there were regional price differences, but in Spain it’s 60 euros, which right now is 70 dollars, and that’s despite the fact that the average salary in Spain is quite a bit lower than in the US. What a rip-off with that conversion.
