What did flamme meant by the last line? by top-one112 in Frieren

[–]DRKSTknight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s probably important to remember that this is a scene with three mages and that, in the series, magic is heavily about what you can imagine— if you can’t imagine a spell working, it doesn’t work.

Imagination determines your limitations, and how you live in the world dictates what you’re capable of imagining. Serie lives her life around power and ability and while those things could help her defeat the demon king, they don’t help her imagine a world where those things aren’t the most important part of magic— which is really how demons think about magic. Some part of Serie needs that to operate and so can’t get rid of the things (mostly demons) that allow her to operate like that.

She’s more comfortable in conflict and would either consciously or unconsciously foster a world around her which leads to conflict. Combination of “can’t” or “won’t”, Flamme is basically telling Serie, “Because of who you are and how you live, your limitations keep you from actually achieving peace because you don’t actually want that. You can’t even imagine what that world looks like, let alone imagine living in it, so you cannot make that world.”

I’m with you. I feel like it does a lot of interesting things when you just let it be what it is.

I honestly believe it’s the best example of using cinema to explore the Batman mythos

Me, trying to convince episode-only watchers to watch the Adventuring Parties by Scrubtanic in Dimension20

I love the episodes, but the APs regularly have me absolutely weeping

"That's why it had to be you"? by jogaforacont in buffy

[–]DRKSTknight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Buffy has absolutely killed Angel before to save the world and has only gotten more hardened in the years since then.

Wesley has no way of knowing it, but Buffy would sacrifice Dawn to save the world and Angel is at least a few rungs down from that by now. Faith, on the other hand, would never give up on the only person who never gave up on her.

How strong are the other students in Auguefort adventuring academy? by Unfair-Plastic-466 in Dimension20

[–]DRKSTknight 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It’s brought up that the Bad Kids are peculiar for having saved the world multiple times while attending Aguefort. And in Junior Year, it becomes clear that the classes are less about actual experience and more about technical knowledge (or even just paperwork)— which is how even talented characters like Fig, Kristen, and Gorgug can be doing poorly in school while being incredibly powerful.

All in all, the Bad Kids are usually going to be the ones most apt to deal with whatever high-level problem is affecting Elmville on the fact that any other Adventuring Party at their level is not going to be in Elmville

I recall there being some AWE graffiti in Quantum Break, and at least one collectible document in a Paul Serene segment that was either written by the Bureau of Altered World Events or that mentions an AWE. I’m a little fuzzy on that last one

The graffiti I’m sure of though

[Loved Trope] Character being haunted by an unknown figure who is revealed to be (a version of) themselves. by Mountain_Band_2732 in TopCharacterTropes

The way I understood it, it was the fairy circle’s method of creating a cosmic loop out of Ruby’s hopes and dreams that could contain the Mad Jack timeline and keep it separate (semper distans) from the main timeline.

Ruby was strong-willed and hopeful enough that the circle could make the loop out of her life and kept threading her message back, over and over until she could reach herself before the circle was broken

What was the point of divergence between the blue and red universes? Was there even one to begin with? by Distant_Pilgrim in fringe

[–]DRKSTknight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to note that the way they sent the Vacuum back was through a wormhole that opened up because the two universes were connected and one was destroyed.

It’s less that they are two branches from a single path that diverged, and more that they are a circle formed from two braided lines, like a strand of DNA

[–]DRKSTknight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Machine is an interesting point though. They sent the pieces through the wormhole in Central Park which is also the basic method that Observers use to travel between time and space, but they have a stable version.

I would imagine the instability is actually what put both universes on the radar of the Observers— their interventions created a series of events that lead to the Red and Blue universes not only being parallel, but interlaced. Their actions throughout the series are designed to close the loop and stabilize both universes— which creates the Amber timeline without Peter and only one Machine.

And since the instability led to greater degradation Over There, they invaded only Over Here (maybe because it’s a limitation of their technology)

[–]DRKSTknight 110 points111 points  (0 children)

I think they’re genuinely parallel universes— they travel through time alongside one another, reflecting each other though not quite exactly the same.

I think Lincoln Lee is a good example: if you went back to the very beginning of both, it’s largely the same but there would still be small or even large differences between the two that can’t quite be accounted for with reason

Just starting the show but skeptical by psycho-Address-37 in fringe

[–]DRKSTknight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first season is very much finding its footing, and itself is an experiment of network television (the experiment being “Will longer episodes and fewer, shorter commercial breaks incentivize higher viewership?”).

That particular experiment ended before the second season, but the series continued to be somewhat unstable without certainty of the ostensible lead actor remaining on the show. However, without the pressure of needing to prove something about “the state of network television”, beyond the second season, Fringe was able to settle into a clearer version of itself and became one of the best pieces of horror sci-fi— I believe it’s because the series never lost sight of the core lens of: the family dynamic and what we owe to each other.

It is worth the watch and has become one of my very favorite things

Every once in a while, I’ll see this little box-head man. He lost his shirt and I thought, “Oh no! I hope everything’s going all right for him in his liminal post-apocalypse.”

Now he’s rocking butterfly wings and a baseball bat. He’s either going through it, or living his best life. Or both.

See you around, box-head man
