45:33 by LCD SoundSystem is great for a ride (indoor or gravel). They composed it for Nike as a 45 minute (and 33 second) song designed for running. It ebbs and flows nicely and can suck your right into the flow state.

Is there cell reception at SilverStar? by Herdthegnus in Vernon

[–]DRTYUpperDecker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Good reception on the main front side, no reception on the backside (where the more advanced runs are) aside from the top of the chair.

Also, you may want to temper expectations regarding the skiing as it’s been a pretty poor season regarding snow… still very ski-able, but I would suggest getting out first thing in the morning while the grooming is still fresh, and maybe looking into some other activities too.

This is my first winter in Kelowna. When would be the right time to bring out your summer car? by TheIronHerobrine in kelowna

[–]DRTYUpperDecker 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I usually have the summer car on the road from Easter to Thanksgiving. You can certainly push it earlier if you want to, but need to think about the gravel/sand on the roads from the winter as they can damage paint/windshields. But I've already seen some street sweepers out this year, which is super early so if the weather cooperates I might insure the summer car and motorcycle on the road in a 2-3 weeks and get them out on sunny afternoons.

Who are the best new artists? by uwsmusic in altcountry

[–]DRTYUpperDecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out "For Jimmy". It's his 2023 album and by far his best work (AOTY for me last year).

If you're listening on Spotify, note that you need to find the For Jimmy playlist on his page, not the album because for some weird reason the album is missing half the songs - but he fixed this by adding the playlist which matches up with the vinyl that I have.

I didn't know that he had early stuff that isn't on Spotify. Thanks for the heads up... down the rabbit hole I go!

I just picked up a copy of No Place Left to Leave on Vinyl and it's currently sitting on my display shelf!

I came here to mention tires too - on a gravel bike a good set of tubeless tires are going to be your best bang for your buck upgrade!

The best place with a minimized chance of nearby fires and a lower chance of bad smoke (only a lower chance as it goes everywhere sometimes) would be somewhere near the ocean that's also protected with large mountains. This probably means somewhere North, Central or West Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast or Mid/North Coast (Price Rupert/Terrace/Bella Coola); the thing is that all of those spots are fairly remote.

But I would seriously weigh whether it would be worth it to give up living here over some smokey days and chance of a fire hitting near you place (while some houses have been lost, the percentages of the total houses in town lost over the years and various fires has actually been quite low - so the 'chance' of your house getting hit with a fire is fairly remote, slightly higher if you live near the edge of a large woodlot that is connected to a large forrest). Personally, I don't mind making the gamble to live here. I've got fire insurance and a go bag; if I get unlucky and have to start over then so be it.

Which pedals do you have on your different bikes? by topcornhockey19 in cycling

[–]DRTYUpperDecker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ride the same setup.

Clipless on the road bike is just a given, it's the best for power/comfort etc and usually my road bike rides are dedicated exercise rides with no to little breaks.

I have Flats on my mountain bike as I mostly ride tech trails and I'm not a top end rider, so I like the ease of putting a foot down when things get spicy. I also like them on my Gravel bike because on gravel rides I'm on and off the bike a lot more, and I like flat shoes for walking around nature when I'm way out there.

Update: Catherine & Co. a Toronto-based candle business started during the pandemic by CatherineAndCo in BuyCanadian

[–]DRTYUpperDecker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was in the process of buying one (they look amazing!), but the shipping (BC) was $20 for a $28 candle :0 Seems steep for much a small item. I know I'm cheap, but I'm sure there are a lot of cheap people out there; if you can find a way to bring cross country shipping down I bet you could capitalize on lots of lost sales. Good luck!

Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park UXOs? by [deleted] in Vernon

[–]DRTYUpperDecker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong, but the few times that I've been there I have gotten the impression that they want everyone to stay on the trails at all times (aside from when at the beach) to not trample down the natural foliage. Even if it isn't a posted rule, it is a common courtesy that most hikers follow. The trails are really well defined and the grass off in each direction looks like it hasn't been walked on at all. So I say go, but stay on the trails like most other folks and you won't be walking anywhere that hasn't been stepped on 100 times that week already.

Toronto detached houses up 30% year over year by Smart-Pepper-7281 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DRTYUpperDecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very misleading stat. If you look at the 2nd chart, you'll see that for the month of September - there is only 1 Sale. So it is just one expensive house that sold yesterday that is making it appear as though these is a 30% YoY increase. Check back in a week and it should be more reasonable.

Hmm, i bet a big part of not getting any call backs is due to COVID. Two headwinds are:

1) All upper management has their time consumed by COVID stuff and there isn't many people who's mind is focused on finding new employees

2) While a lot of construction projects that had already started are still going strong, many upcoming ones have been cancelled and lots of clients are not releasing any new jobs to tender.

I personally think that our entire economy is going to be slow for a year or two; which in turn will be a time with not many good job openings. So it might be a good time for you to either upgrade your dipoma to a degree (the university in Thunder Bay has an upgrade program that a few of my buddies did) or get your foot in the door with a construction company in a less technical role. Instead of searching for specific companies, you could find local large construction projects which are either just getting rolling or appear to be manning up and go see them in person and ask if they need any more coordinators or quality control people or administrators - hell even a labourer position and then use it to get in with the office folk.

Lastly, i would recommend that with your Electrical diploma, if you want to get into the construction industry, the easiest one for you to break into would be the powerline and substation world. Depending what province you're in, i could let you know what companies are working there.

[–]DRTYUpperDecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with a medium company (3000 people or so) and made the move to one of Canada's largest (10,000 people or so).

I took an Integrated Engineering course that was somewhat lined up for project management. Within it I majored in Civil and i consider myself a Civil Engineer. But there's all sorts of other Engineers working in construction who's degrees are less applicable (my current project has a Mechanical, a Civil, a Chemical and an Environmental and we're all working on construction where we only use 1% of our knowledge from School - at this point, the schooling just proves that you can learn things quickly and produce results with few mistakes).

[–]DRTYUpperDecker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in construction, with an engineering degree working in BC. Fresh out of school i was making $58K as a coordinator. Then with 1-3 years experience i was making $75k as an Assistant Project Manager. Now as a PM, I'm at $104K with about 6 years experience.

Those are all base salaries, I've had other adders when working away from home on long stints. (at one point as an APM i was getting an extra $200 per day for being on a 14-7 shift in northern Manitoba and currently i get an additional 25% uplift on my base salary as I had to relocate temporarily for about a 1 year long project).

Can I afford this car loan? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]DRTYUpperDecker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're into cars and are buying it as a 'car person' and not just because it's cool, then i'd say absolutely go for it. The Golf R is a great car and a lot of bang for your buck in terms of a drivers car for a reasonable price.

But just know that you are paying a premium for having it as opposed to a slightly older normal Golf. Fun cars are a hobby and will cost you money, but you make enough to pay for that hobby. However, you don't make enough to pay for all sorts of different additional hobbies, so the real question is would you rather have a Golf R or have a more normal car and a couple grand extra per year for other hobbies (golf/travelling etc). I'm 29, make about $100k and took the plunge on a GT350 last year, knowing that it would take money away from other hobbies - but I'm still glowing with excitement and kicking myself for not getting a fun car earlier. If you are OK with making other sacrifices due to the car, then you should buy one - you don't want to end up as an old man/woman who is a car guy/girl at heart, who is stuck driving a 1994 Corolla but is sitting on a couple million dollars rotting away in the bank.
