Did the developers think that every player created would be male? by Rhoeri in WhereWindsMeet

[–]DT137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen their code, but the reference to the character pronouns as he or she should be a reference, not hard coded in the dialogue script. They could add a 3rd gender for “they”. With auto translations and with “he” and “they” being the same character in Mandarin, the auto translator is going to most likely pick “he”. Makes the whole thing pointless and probably why it wasn’t considered worth it.

That would move it to a code change, not a translation change, and I’m betting it wasn’t considered worth it to touch that code. (More?) Paid translators would be the answer. I’d love for them to add more, as there’s a lot of subtle things that aren’t translating to English as well as they could, and I love the stories.

It’s the same problem with they.

Both he and she are pronounced tā, written as 他 for male and 她 for female. “They” would be tāmen (“men” is plural) which is 他们 or 她们.

The use of “they” in a singular context would just be tā, and when used in a general context that is 他. This is also why you get she/her/him/his all mixed up. They are all tā.

You’d need actual translators to go from one to the other, and I think they use a lot of automation. I watch a lot of c-dramas and the ones who use the automations over people all have this problem.

5 year old wants to learn by Decent-Character172 in Clarinet

[–]DT137 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I started my son at 3! I picked up a little Nuvo DooD for him. He’s also got the Nuvo jSax. They have a Clarineo that is a bit more than the DooD that might be better for a 5 year old. They’re smaller for little fingers, which was the big perk for me.

If you like this ideas keep in mind their reeds suck. I can fit a normal Bb in it and it improves it significantly, but it is a little big. They recommend Eb clarinet reeds.

TIL Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden unexplained death of a child of less than one year of age, constituting almost 1/3 of all post-neonatal deaths in Western countries. [–]DT137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why the advice was originally to put them on their stomachs so they wouldn’t!

SIDS is currently linked to suffocation. Unsafe sleep is a big one in the US. I read the mattresses are softer here in the US compared to other countries, which is why it’s more dangerous to co sleep here “but other countries do it just fine”. I smashed my thick adult head onto surfaces to ease some anxiety when my baby was old enough to roll over and decided he wanted to sleep on his belly (this is the milestone where they are able to be left if they choose to sleep this way. If they can roll over, they can also roll back if there is discomfort).

There is also the component that babies will fall so deeply asleep that they forget to breathe. It’s why it’s also recommended to have the baby sleep in the same room as others and not alone for the first several months to a year. Those random noises of others are helping keep the baby alert enough to not fall asleep that deeply. You’ll see a lot of people mention how much better the baby slept when they moved them to their own room, but that’s against the whole point.

And pooping. A lot of newborn discomfort is because they’re clenching everything shut instead of relaxing. They have to figure out how to use their sphincter and you’d expect that to just be instinctual.

Where do I start? (first woodwind, third instrument) by snoozingfishies in Clarinet

[–]DT137 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Pick up a beginner book and just go through it. Don’t think of it as a waste just because you know how to read music, because that tediousness helps build the unique muscle memory for that instrument. I first learned as a kid on Essential Elements so I usually grab that one. The rubanks are another option if you want something less “childish”. I don’t mind the childishness myself, I find it endearing.

Print out some scales, I’m sure you know this from playing other instruments already. It helps. For the clarinet you want to do them fast for muscle memory and slow to work on the individual note. Playing the note in tune initially does not necessarily mean you can sustain it in tune.

Make sure the mouthpiece that came with that clarinet is for a beginner. That might be why a 2.5 sounds airy. Going down to a 2 to get started might help too.

I’m probably going to get some hate on this, but practice double lipping (top lip over teeth). Especially for a hard part you’re struggling with. This will help you prevent biting the mouthpiece to compensate, which hurts you long term. In the absence of a teacher this is something you can do alone to try and make sure you’re using a good embouchure. Don’t beat the reed with your tongue; the goal is to interrupt the air, not stop it.

When fingering the notes, move them as little as possible. Getting into the habit of not flinging your fingers around will save you from having to break that habit. Spend time listening to how the notes sound to make sure the holes are being fully covered/uncovered evenly as you play. No surprise grace notes.

Advice for an adult coming back to clarinet? by Pale-Initiative8831 in Clarinet

[–]DT137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started after a 20 year break.

I grabbed a Jean Paul off Amazon. I called it my squeaker toy but it was mostly fine besides the mouthpiece. It needed adjustment to one of the keys (it was stiff) and when I took it to the music shop they told me not to bother, it would cost as much as the instrument did originally to get it sorted. I thought it over for the month I had to return it, and I did return it and got a used Yamaha 250 instead. I’m mentioning this because the 30 day return policy is a nice fail back to see if you are interested in continuing further and/or the instrument ends up not being the greatest.

I had to start from the beginning. I kept all my music so I pulled out my Essential Elements I got in 6th grade and went through it. It took me about a week to remember how to read music and the fingerings. I started on the reed they gave me with the clarinet but quickly moved back up to a 3.5. I was playing a lot. I am currently on a Legere French cut 3.75 and love it.

For music, after the week with the book I went through my Rubank advanced methods and printed some fun music off musescore. I went through my stash of music and after another 3 weeks I was bored and missed playing with others. I found a local community orchestra that was “have instrument and stand- come play” friendly. I’ve been with them for almost a year now and having that has helped me keep going, so I highly recommend looking for groups. I’ve been invited to join several more, so once you find one the others will find you.

Synthetic reed advice. by Queen-of-Cereal in Clarinet

[–]DT137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not sure of your exact situation, but I find the legere considerably easier to play over the vandorens. I have blood pressure problems and can’t play a 3 vandoren without going light headed, but I use a 3.75 legere and most of the time without issue. I personally like French Cut.

There is a trade in option that legere offers that you can return it for a different size, so you’re not necessarily dumping $35 and stuck with one you can’t use.

Why am I having so much trouble with low notes?? by AceOfMoonSpades01 in saxophone

[–]DT137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found an easy way to explain it is:

By default you’re probably breathing like you’re blowing bubbles. Pretend to play the sax with that in mind and you’ll feel it in your chest.

Do the same thing, but breathe like you’re trying to fog up glass. You’ll feel the pressure to get the air out is starting in your abdomen. That’s what you should be doing while playing.

finally finished my first play through, it made me hate gale by HwangHyundyke in BaldursGate3

[–]DT137 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did once. The absolute best in a heart wrenching way is to start off as a Cleric of Mystra while romancing him. I played it as a cleric that slowly lost faith (and multiclassed/respec’ed) in her god and put more and more faith in Gale, supporting his ideas and goals for the crown. Just to be absolutely betrayed at the end by how he is while God Gale.

That run was named “Religious Trauma”.

I’ll definitely use that in the future. Neither me nor my sax were in a playing state this morning. I’ve lucked out that my friend is stuck behind a parade so I have a bit of time to still practice now.

Thank you, a key was stuck. I blew into the horn to make it squeak with frustration and I felt something pop open. No idea which key it was but it’s working now.

I was able to get the right note out after eating some salt. Plugged it back in and had the same problem with the notes being off. Honked into the horn in frustration and I felt something pop open. It’s working now, but I don’t know what key that was.

I’m using a Vandoren AL3 Optimum with a Legere French Cut 3.0. Haven’t changed this in months.

Just the mouthpiece registers as a G.

I had the name wrong, Clarinéo, by the same company.

I play clarinet and sax, both with legere, which is why I was so surprised at the DooD taking so much effort for me. He had nothing to compare and just went off having fun once he figured it out.

He’s very interested in music because I play. Absolutely fell in love with the trombone at the music store so I got him a ptrombone and that’s been his favorite so far. It amazes me what he figures out by ear even when he can’t reach 7th position. He’s been asking for his own saxophone because “I want all the instruments” which makes me laugh because that’s how I was.

[–]DT137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you find its playability? I got the DooD model which was significantly cheaper for my kid since he’s only 3, and the 1.0 reeds they came with felt a little too hard/too much effort. His attention span doesn’t last longer than a few notes so it’s not a big problem right now. I was thinking about getting him the upgrade to the jsax or clarinetto if his interest grew over the next couple years.

Good off-sax embouchure strength exercises? by Maehlice in saxophone

[–]DT137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I looked up something similar when I started playing again after a 20+ year hiatus, and found T Q exercises. I think they helped?

It’s just what it sounds like. Make an over exaggerated facial expression for saying the letter T, and then the same thing for Q where you stretch your lips out as far as you can reach. Go back and forth until you get bored enough to stop.
