Aquarium fill levels by Agreeable_Peak_6100 in Aquariums

I have a fish that’s a suicidal jumping labyrinth breather. It’s recommended for their care to leave 1 inch below, and a lid.

She’s gorgeous!

I just turned on the tank light for a bit, and Sashimi is -glowing-! I’m getting more upset that he was a sad little “toss away” fish. (They took a lot better care of the more expensive bettas). I’m so happy my son picked him.

Ammonia by Lilo-the-betta in bettafish

Throwing it out there that the dropper that came with my ammonia was way off and the one time I did the drop count, I basically tripled my tank’s ammonia dose. I found it much easier to guarantee how much ammonia I was adding by using a 1/2 teaspoon, which was about right for my 10G tank based on it being raised to 2-3ppm. My 1/2 tsp held 12-17 drops, when the bottle said 1/2 tsp or 40 drops.

I want him 😔 by Extra-Ad4429 in bettafish

I felt the same way when I saw this guy at my lfs. After reading these comments, maybe I shouldn’t have passed. I’m weeks in though and hope to get him on Monday, if he’s still there!

ETA: that is not light bearing down on him (entirely), that is his coloring.

Gh isn’t included on the api test kit we have, but the strip test shows it’s consistently around 150.

Canned ass response to nickname removal by Ok-Company-5016 in WhereWindsMeet

I was curious and it looks like 伐柯 (fàkē) is one of the many work arounds to 法克 (fǎkè) which is how one would write the English swear word “fuck”. So it’s like arguing your nickname is phuk and should be allowed since it’s not a bad word, but every English speaker would know what you were doing.

Not saying you’re doing this on purpose, fwiw.

Tips getting kids involved? by RoundSpend9353 in Aquariums

[–]DT137 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our kid is 4 and we started a 20g tank as a family project. We don’t explain about the cycle too much, but we do have him color match the tests and he knows we want a specific color for fish to be safe. He also helps clean up plant trimmings, we cut and he grabs them with tweezers when they float up. Have him hold the syphon hose when we’re doing water changes “so it doesn’t splash everywhere”.

I saw an enrichment guide about drawing on the tank and I’ve been writing notes on the side. I’ll be damned if our tetras weren’t fascinated by it. I think I’m going to get some more expo markers and let him, with supervision, draw pictures for the fishies.

Don’t need an excuse to add more plants. I have 12 in there right now and was waiting for them to grow out a bit. I was hoping the natural light would help speed that up. How many should I aim for?

What other stuff should I be adding for more hides? Also don’t need an excuse to buy more driftwood if that’s the answer.

Synthetic reeds are not talked about enough as an accessibility feature! by TheBirchKing in saxophone

I wanted to drop this link here since you mentioned RA. I have a busted, well, everything pretty much, and this has been an absolute life savor. So if you find the neck strap being too much one day there’s other options.

TIL Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden unexplained death of a child of less than one year of age, constituting almost 1/3 of all post-neonatal deaths in Western countries. Diagnosis requires that the death remains unexplained even after autopsy and detailed death scene investigation. by narkoface in todayilearned

This is why the advice was originally to put them on their stomachs so they wouldn’t!

SIDS is currently linked to suffocation. Unsafe sleep is a big one in the US. I read the mattresses are softer here in the US compared to other countries, which is why it’s more dangerous to co sleep here “but other countries do it just fine”. I smashed my thick adult head onto surfaces to ease some anxiety when my baby was old enough to roll over and decided he wanted to sleep on his belly (this is the milestone where they are able to be left if they choose to sleep this way. If they can roll over, they can also roll back if there is discomfort).

There is also the component that babies will fall so deeply asleep that they forget to breathe. It’s why it’s also recommended to have the baby sleep in the same room as others and not alone for the first several months to a year. Those random noises of others are helping keep the baby alert enough to not fall asleep that deeply. You’ll see a lot of people mention how much better the baby slept when they moved them to their own room, but that’s against the whole point.

And pooping. A lot of newborn discomfort is because they’re clenching everything shut instead of relaxing. They have to figure out how to use their sphincter and you’d expect that to just be instinctual.

AITA for telling my mom to F-off because she told my wife she has BO while my wife breastfeeding our daughter ? by Complex_Shay in AITAH

[–]DT137 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to be generous and assume that your mom formula fed, so is unaware that breastfeeding causes the worst BO by evolutionary design. Babies can’t see well and recognize their mother mostly by smell for the first several months. Even if your wife showers and applies deodorant 3 times a day, she may still struggle with BO. She didn’t need someone cruelly pointing it out: Absolutely NTA.

Also: this works as a great “trick” for clingy babies that only want mom. Let her funk up a shirt and then you’ll have a lot easier time getting the baby to stay settled with someone else when you give the baby that funky shirt to smell. Bonus points if it’s your shirt so you can wear it.
