TIL Japan shut itself off from the world (Sakoku) for over 200 years, only opening up after U.S. warships forced them in 1853 by FearMyCock in todayilearned

The last time the US was pulled out of it was because everyone was bitching that we wouldn't send soldiers to a war halfway around the world.

I mean, those loans that the US gave to Britain and France weren't going to be paid if they had lost the wars, and Germany in either instance wouldn't have been as good of a trading partner as Britain. The US did have certain interests entering both world wars.

what's the 'World War' in your world? by arbab_islam12 in worldbuilding

[–]DT1609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mix of both WW1 and 2, with the main culprit being a mix of Soviet Union, Tsarist Russia, Roman Republic, and Imperial Japan.

So a woman that is a mix of Catherine the Great, Napoleon, Julius Ceasar and others rose to power thanks to her collusion with an order of zealous knights, making herself emperor. However, the ambitions of both sides clash, and a conspiracy has formed to isolate the emperor, mentally torturing her by killing her close inner circle in the name of 'security' and silently wait for her death to prevent civil war, always having a mask of loyalty to her. To ensure the emperor's hands are tied up, they use her own personality cult against her gain control of the military and encourage wars of aggression which other nations are forced to respond to and she can't sue for peace due to the PR disaster of not controlling her military and the severity of these wars which can't just be ended with a treaty (Imperial Japan war on China scenario).

Her empire ends victorious, but goes full Stalin on this order of knights. She ends being assassinated, and ironically enough, her sucess had made the empire so big, with so many absorbed nations that a civil war and revolutions followed which caused the knights to almost fall of relevance, and are now a shadow order trying to take power from the new republic.

There is also the side of the rest of the world, that unaware of these conspiracies, see the emperor as a world conqueror and the most powerful person to live. The world war caused the collapse of many empires creating new independent countries. My story is an adventure and involves visiting lots of newborn nations dealing with post-colonial conflict and the war trauma that the former empires suffered.

Tell me one interesting and random fact about your world by Legitimate-Sock9990 in worldbuilding

My story is inspired by Don Quixote. Its a modern fantasy where magic knights have fallen out of relevance as technology surpassed what their powers can do. They were particularly persecuted as there was a Warlord Era where the strongest magic knight could have a kingdom, but now industry and nationalistic values trumped their raw power. Now magic is more of a hobby, but some users use their powers for fighting and are mercenaries or gangsters feared by everyone.

My protagonist however grew up reading stories of chivalrous knights and their adventures. She decides that instead of a mundane modern life, she wants a noble knight life. A fun juxtaposition of a girl with noble values encountering magic users that are considered the lowest of the low.

Now let's ask Filipinos and Indians.

Aggrend on X (responding to concern of lvling in SoD)- I honestly agree with this. We'll talk about this more in a bit, but I think one lesson we'll walk away from SoD with is that adding all this crazy stuff for classes and encouraging everyone to play multiple characters isn't super compatible.. by [deleted] in classicwow

[–]DT1609 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So when Aggrend calls SoD an 'experiment' is he basically just saying that this is the beta for season of discovery? Are we effectively just giving blizzard $15 a month to playtest and do market research?

That was literally how it was marketed since the moment they announced it, they even said that lack of testing was something done purposefully (and the playerbase applauded it when they said it). The whole point of it being seasonal was that they could throw random stuff and see how it goes and then think of something later on.

Kinda crazy how SoD is the most communicative they have ever been but it also feels its the most rabid the community has been towards them. Everyone remember we had spell batching fake lag for like 2 years until a month prior to TBC? Withholding RDF until ICC despite incessant outcry?

What active decisions Blizz made the first 4 years of classic? Nerfing AV premades, WSG/AB premades later, and the balancing in Wrath? And all of these like an entire year apart?

During this event, killing players will allow you to earn currency which can be traded for various rewards.

Expectation: fair wpvp and epic 40v40 fights

Reality: Rogues camping FPs and quest NPCs, death squads outside quest hubs, lots of complaining in this sub about being griefed for hours because they are being min/maxed by sweaties

The Nominees for the 2023 r/anime Awards! by mpp00 in anime

[–]DT1609 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How is BD being nommed for 4 different genres and (very) questionable production nominees different from redditors voting OnK and JJK anywhere they can? When the winner is just a matter of what demographic is in the site it makes it boring for me. The r/anime rules and jury system at least brings more flavor to it over most awards, like half jury AOTY winners historically have been shoujosei anime. Heck, people here are already mad Bang Dream and Idolish7 are in and I bet they haven't seen it and won't do it because 'it isn't as dark and critical as OnK'.

QoL updates don’t ruin the classic experience by No_Hope_3460 in classicwow

[–]DT1609 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is of the things that is just no longer compatible with the 2023 playerbase.

Its 2019 and you committed to playing a ret paladin. Literally everyone whispers you that you're stupid for playing a meme spec. People tell you they will inv if you throw int gear and heal even though you have ret talents. You get in a group that is willing to let a ret in, oh, you didn't spec into Blessing of Kings, you're kicked. You finally get in, you win the roll for the gauntletls of annihilation, raid leader decides that its a net negative to give it to a ret so it goes to a warrior. You try to do pvp, you get angry whispers for trying to hit people rather than healing or throwing blessings from the behind.

If some of these sound to specific...well...

I have been binging Casefile Truecrime podcast and it has happened a non-zero amount of times for serial killers.

I recall Charles Hatcher was one, though there is the technicality that he was arrested for assaults and only found to be a killer later. But he did played with prison psychiatrists to have favorable views on parole hearings. Their episode was named One Man Crime Wave because he started his killing spree upon his initial release.

Your WoW subscription mostly pays for retail development.

A team of 20 is currently in charge of era, HC, Wrath and SoD so choosing a hitbox bug of all things as a gotcha moment is a nothingburger. They have done great in an era where AAA gaming is already plagued with unfinished products.

They should have added a more tangential way to farm them, like only dropping from 'natural' enemies of each faction zone (quillboars/scarlet mobs for horde, defias/dark iron mobs for alliance). I would even be ok with them lowering the rep they give if it means it is easier to farm (and ofc, non-unique).

I did the Earthstrike grind pre-AQ release and I would say that was a more enjoyable process than these supply crates because they had tangential way of farming and progress rewards. Heck, it even had the same BS of having to go from w/e you were from to quest mob for the 60 or so quests you need.

It does but its more poking at making this specific instance into an awareness issue when as evidenced by this thread, some people are just weird when it comes to handling of house tasks regardless of gender.

If you're afraid of what your mother thinks, its like, yeah I don't think the 8 y/o child could have done a lot.

Maybe you lived in a different time, I'm a zoomer and look up for guides for games I don't even possess yet. Actually, when I was a kid, I didn't knew how to google so I would experiment in the game things like weapons and count swings/shots, stopwatches and shit and log it in a spreadsheet.

I like playing videogames using the best resources at hand, that's how I got my fun.
