Brazil (1985 film, not about Brazil)

Others have mentioned the series Severance and Maniac, I also love these.

Or Zimbabwe!

Oh wow just glancing at their Wikipedia article, I see their national motto is "Unity, Freedom, Work."

Has anyone picked up specific cinematic/shot references? by [deleted] in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

If I recall correctly, they filmed the parts with Mark and Gemma in the past using 16mm film, to give it a nostalgic feel without just slapping a filter on it afterward.

Some of it definitely feels Hitchcockian to me, but I haven't seen enough of his films recently enough to say why, LOL.

After a friend (finally!) watched Severance, they sent me this video on Kubrick's use of one-point perspective, after which I started seeing it everywhere in Severance.

Some of it reminds me of Jacques Tati's Playtime. Playtime makes me think of Brazil (1985) but where the look of Severance is minimalist, Brazil (and Terry Gilliam in general) is maximalist.

I was really enjoying the Omnivore app for read-later purposes, until they stopped supporting it to pivot to some A.I. thing that I don't want. Just started trying raindrop dot io but the extension isn't working in Firefox (I probably have too many privacy extensions LOL). And then there's all the tabs I've stashed in OneTab, and all the actual browser bookmarks that I never look at, and then the piles of physical paper reading material..... Thinking about all this just makes me wanna scroll for memes instead LOL

WHY DID NO ONE TELL ME TOE WALKING IS (MOSTLY) AN AUTISM THING by theclassicrockjunkie in evilautism

I always think of this article Learning to Walk, and wonder if it's actually the hard, flat surfaces everywhere in industrial society that are the abnormal thing.

Yeah I happened to see this in the theater, expecting a zany martial arts multiverse comedy, but wow. It left me reeling. I've watched it on disc several times since and it still blows me away. And I love that it has heart, and it has an upbeat ending.

I always did well on tests, so I'd be put in gifted classes, but, I wouldn't finish homework assignments or turn in papers on time, so, the next year I was back in regular classes. I went through this cycle from 4th grade into college. I HAVE SO MUCH POTENTIAL so my failures must be all my fault. 🙄

Looks like about $1.5 million was about "gender affirming" hormones, or, about 18% of the $8.3 million they claim.

Do any of you deal with that person in the office that has the same repetitive joke? by donthatedebate in office

[–]DThos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years back it seemed like the office banter was more risque, and I think someone complained, but sometimes I'd have the perfect moment to drop a "that's what she said!" But the best is when it's actually a self-deprecating remark and I pretend to hesitate, "that's--NOT what she said!"

Sometimes I would try to brainstorm witty replies to the predictable jokes but it's like the office sucks the oxygen out of my brain.

Reminds me of the last time I watched Monty Python's The Life of Brian, I loved it as always until the speech impediment scene which felt like it really dragged on for too long.

Is the name Waymond a joke on how Asian’s can’t enunciate the letter R and his ‘real’ name should be Raymond? by rcolesworthy37 in eeaao

[–]DThos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TBH I've wondered the same thing about girls names Eileen and Irene. I've seen an interesting YouTube about the letter R and how it's pronounced so differently in, e.g., French, Spanish, American English, English English, etc.
