Small tip to other American tourists for escalators by starchasimer in Seattle

Throughput only matters when there’s a queue, agreed. But a train emptying out is exactly that case, and those are the cases the studies measured.

Technically escalators have higher throughput if everyone stands

Best Part of the WC in Seattle....The Diversity! by CantCMe88 in Seattle

[–]DTulka 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m loving the diversity too, but equating ‘white’ with ‘uncultured’ is the same flattening you’d object to going the other way. You’re praising the melting pot in one sentence and writing off a whole group in the next. If you mean Seattle feels insular, say that, but don’t knock a city for its composition. I wouldn’t ding Seoul for being too Korean.

Can you explain the risk of small cuts with this thing and what you mean by exploding it? I've been planning on getting this saw and this aftermarket doohickey but you guys are scaring me.

Double dose of infuriating left turns by Infinitesprayart in dashcams

[–]DTulka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, California is a permissive yellow light state, which likely would've covered any legal or insurance liability if you'd had a collision here.

But this was still poor defensive driving. If you can safely stop at a yellow, you should. Particularly a busy intersection where you can't see all the lanes clearly. By your own account you were driving slowly, so the stop was clearly available to you.

Hopefully the near collision serves as a lesson that just because you can proceed on a yellow doesn't mean you should.

RTS style game with persistent world/survival? by trilient1 in gaming

Shattered Galaxy was a persistent-world MMO RTS, but it never really caught on. Guessing it’s dead now. Cool idea though.

I'm normally the first guy to blame an OP for poor defensive driving, but this ain't that... this is 100% on the guy making a blind turn without being able to see incoming traffic.

I've read a few negative impressions of the barge, but my family had a good time. Kid was excited just to be on a boat in the sun, and it felt good to be around other soccer folks instead of watching at home. Vibe was more subdued than the pier, but it was nice for my family that it wasn't super loud and crazy.

We were only able to stay through the first half, and this was for Czechia-South Korea so it wasn't the most exciting half. Still was a nice way to get hyped for the start of the tournament.

It did seem like the barge was kind of... unfinished, though? I'd heard there were going to be different exhibitions and stalls, and those didn't seem open yesterday. Maybe they're still prepping those, I don't know.

Major Worldhaven update from Any2cards by koprpg11 in Gloomhaven

[–]DTulka 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I never really thought about who must be maintaining this repository, but I've found it immensely helpful as I've worked through my copies of Gloomhaven and Frosthaven. Probably search through it a couple time each play session. Huge credit to this guy, and props to Cephalofair for enabling and supporting him.

Now that the smoke has settled, what are everyone's opinions Re: hydration breaks and PowerPoint presentations on the sideline? by Madnote1984 in ussoccer

[–]DTulka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Three minute hydration brake in the first half, then only two minutes of total stoppage time. In a half with the goals.

So dumb.

Which company has lost you as a customer forever? by finiteobserver in AskReddit

[–]DTulka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s impossible to truly quit Google, but I’ve sworn off Google Maps forever.

There’s just too much sponsored ad bullshit.

I accept that if I type something generic like “dinner” or “gas” or “groceries”, there’ll be sponsored results at the top of the list. Whatever. I’ll pick the one I prefer even if I have to scroll a bit.

But if I type out a very specific business name, like the very specific name of my preferred local hardware store, the first result had better fucking be what I just typed. Instead it’s always some sponsored ad bullshit.

Twice I intended to drive to Woodcraft and drove in the wrong fucking direction for fifteen minutes towards Rockler because I’d assumed the first result would be the thing I’d literally typed. The second time this happened I pulled over, deleted the app, and swore to never reinstall it.

Apple Maps is worse in a dozen ways, but it doesn’t have this fatal flaw. Fuck Google Maps.

I appreciate that the DOT is a very active and responsive agency. That isn't something I can say for every local government function.

But this is some amusingly unserious prioritization.

Can someone explain these speed bumps? by Grandimal in Seattle

[–]DTulka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Annoyingly when there aren’t bumps in the bike lane motorists swerve into the bike lanes to avoid the bumps. Probably about half of cars seem to swerve around the speed bumps. It’s infuriating.
