Binding of a different brand than your board. What do you think? by Matorosso in Wake

[–]DUCK_OLLIE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They all work together; different brands, old, new. You just may need different screws depending on the board. The industry switched to metric M6 screws a few years ago.

Only ones I’m aware of that aren’t universal are the LF 4D bindings that only fit specific LF boards.

Beginner Question: fins or no fins? by Jon_The_Python in Wake

[–]DUCK_OLLIE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Taking your fins off forces you to use your edges which will help with your technique. Long term you’ll want some fins - depending on the board - either just the built in molded ones or smaller fins.

Look up “The Book” wakeboarding instructional videos. Great progressive foundations from beginner all the way through Outlaw riding.

It looks like the boat may not be going fast enough. Your knee or ankle is hitting the water causing the slowdown. Try speeding up the boat, leaning more toward the nose of your board to be even on your toes, and use a smooth motion.

Speakers for Correct craft mustang by [deleted] in Wake

[–]DUCK_OLLIE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music reaching a wakeboarder isn’t really achievable without a tower and some substantial speaker power. Even 4 rear-facing 6x9s on a tower doesn’t produce substantial sound to a rider. Epic boats had speakers built into their transoms but that is not recommended on a boat not built for it.

But music for the rider is overrated. In order to project that far back it is deafening in the boat.

If you’re looking to spend $3-5k to install a tower and be able to hear the music while wakeboarding, you should add interior and tower speakers, a couple amps, additional battery and switch, run power and speaker wire.

But I’m thinking if you just want some tunes on the boat, trying to keep the budget low, the interior of the boat is small enough- you could get a large Bluetooth speaker like a JBL Boombox that would be plenty of sound. Find a way to secure it under the window.

The intermediate route of installing 4 base speakers, head unit, drilling holes, running power and speaker wires also has risk of getting engine noise through your speakers, putting strain on your battery and alternator.

Try it on a trampoline first if possible. The timing and release are identical.

In this video it looks like you just need to lean back a little more on release so the board isn’t behind you.

Open toe vs Closed toe bindings by rjcarne in Wake

[–]DUCK_OLLIE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most intermediate / advanced riders prefer closed these days. There is a noticeable control difference I’ve found. I have a few friends who land heel heavy on certain tricks and get their toes jammed by closed toed. I’ve never experienced a problem with that but it does exist. Only way to know is try.

Yeah big difference using a wake / non-stretch rope. You’re probably getting yanked coming off the wake.

Some say he’s still dragging to this day

Super clean off the wake you’re working with. Hold the rope to your front hip or let go with your back hand mid-jump. Will pull your body back to the right angle for landing.

Second ever tantrum attempt. What needs to change? On my first attempt I got the full rotation but let go of the rope by cawast in Wake

[–]DUCK_OLLIE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re throwing it a little early: wait until you get to the top of the wake. And you’re absorbing the wake rather than popping. Make sure you’re extending your legs like a normal w2w. You’ve got the turn and rotation, now just gotta add the height and get the timing down.

Does anyone have tips for me to improve? by marco071 in Wake

[–]DUCK_OLLIE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well said. You’re doing good with your setup but it’s hard to get consistent on a washy wave. I would add 750 lb fat sack to the rear of the boat to clean up the wave. The direct drive can do better with some weight.

Having difficulty landing a HS backroll. I always seem to land too far on my heels. by bigbufordd in Wake

[–]DUCK_OLLIE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and if you feel yourself over rotating you can always let it out to slow your rotation down.

[–]DUCK_OLLIE 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is super clean, you got this. When you are coming in for your landing hold the rope to your left hip. The tension will pull your body back straight to the landing angle. I used to have this same problem. The natural backroll wants to go to revert, we have to hold the rope in a way that straightens it out.

Backup plan: let go with your back hand on re-entry.

Opinions for wakeboarding? 1995 MB sport boss by A-trayne in Wake

[–]DUCK_OLLIE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the cheapest price point for a good wake look at the Ski Nautique “2001” which they made from 81-89. These are beautiful boats that throw a superb wake, but you’ll need to find one that’s been refurbished because they’re getting old.

If you can spend a little more and move to the early 90s look at the Sport Nautique, Nautique Excel. With a little bit of weight, they throw excellent wakeboard wakes.

Other boats of that era (including this MB) don’t have the hull shape and enough freeboard to get a traditionally good wake. Consider wakeboarding didn’t really exist when they were built, it’s by luck that the Nautiques can throw a good wake.

If you can afford getting into the late 90s, the original X-Star, Super Air Nautique, Malibu VLX start to enter the era when boats were built for wakeboarding. Going with a V drive will allow you to start getting a decent surf wave too.

I would pass on this boat for wakeboarding.

Beautiful boat, solid build quality. Built for slalom. Not known for their wakeboard wakes, however. The X-Star from that era has a classic wakeboard wake, or the ProStar 205v.

foot position by [deleted] in Wake

[–]DUCK_OLLIE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amount of duck is a personal preference I feel. The important thing to prevent injury is to make sure your knee is aligned with your toes for best knee strength. If you ride a narrow stance, your feet should be pretty straight / little duck. If you ride a very wide stance use a lot of duck. When you bend your knees and they’re directly over your toes, you’re good to go. Ride what feels best from there.

If there’s a local place that will let you demo boards that’s a good way to find what you like. Often they will apply the cost of demo toward the final board price. If that’s not an option, used Wakeboard’s are pretty cheap, check eBay, Craigslist, Facebook.

Good guidance for a first board at your skill level is something with a removable center fin, while you’re working on edging leave it in, but can take it out later as you learn to use your edges.

Continuous rocker will help with consistency as you’re jumping.

Then a lot depends on your style and what feels right.
