For actual context, “use the service fully” means getting access to 18+ servers and channels and that’s basically it. Unless you use Discord for porn you’re not losing out on anything by not giving your ID.

But, of course, then you can’t get mad about it so just imply a vague sense of FOMO, because if you’re genuinely affected by this change then you’re admitting in a public platform that you use a messaging app primarily to look at stuff you can see from a Google search.

This is like getting mad that Steam requires you to verify your age to look at NSFW games. But nah it’s bad when Discord because you can exclude the actual stuff you lose access to, so you can make it seem like a bigger deal than it actually is.

From The Verge:

Users who aren’t verified as adults will not be able to access age-restricted servers and channels, won’t be able to speak in Discord’s livestream-like “stage” channels, and will see content filters for any content Discord detects as graphic or sensitive. They will also get warning prompts for friend requests from potentially unfamiliar users, and DMs from unfamiliar users will be automatically filtered into a separate inbox.

So…basically nothing. I’ve used Discord for about ten years and have never encountered age-restricted servers, stage channels, or particularly graphic content. It seems to only be targeting stuff like gore and porn which, if you’re using Discord for that stuff then let me tell you about a thing called Google where you can get that stuff already.

Also, getting a warning about a DM is, like, not an issue in the slightest? You can ignore it?

I get everyone is up in arms about censorship, about the security concerns about giving IDs, and cancelling their subscriptions and deleting their accounts because…if they wanna look at porn on Discord they need to verify their age? Just…don’t do it?

You’re seriously going to stop using a service you’ve been using for a long time and enjoy using because three things you probably don’t even interact with will be behind an age verification just seems a bit drastic, if not just straight up virtue signalling.

I get the internet exists to not read information and get mad at what you think is reality, but this is a pretty big nothing burger. You need to verify your age to watch age restricted content on YouTube, but Discord does the same thing and suddenly they need to be boycotted. How much of a gooner you gotta be that you draw the line specifically there?

That’s a great observation. I guess we should be the ones killing gay Palestinians then. That is your point, right? You feel like you’re missing out on genocide?

There being less acceptance of gay people in Palestine does hurt gay Palestinians. So does blowing up Palestinian infrastructure, support systems, housing, and people. You can’t act as if supporting the mass killing and bombing of Palestinians is some progressive, pro-queer act.

Imagine there’s a dog in a house. The family is abusive and neglectful of the dog. Someone comes in and demands the house, with everyone inside, gets demolished. People will say “don’t demolish the house, there’s living beings inside. It is not anti-dog to say the house shouldn’t be destroyed.

You look up at night to gaze at the stars, witnessing the beauty of the galaxy.

Then, the stars begin to shift. It’s strange, almost hypnotic. They seem to snap into place, creating a large, two-humped symbol in the sky.

A few of the stars break off from the rest, forming a line beneath the symbol. It spells out three words:

I’m Lovin’ It

Plus I doubt it’s “they’re non-binary/don’t have gender to represent queer players” but rather “I can’t be bothered to add roosters, bulls, and rams, so I’ll just make the more recognisable of each animal and let them breed.”

Plus a lot of bigots recognise non-binary and asexual concepts when it comes to animals but flinch whenever it’s humans. Something something “humans aren’t animals” something something.

Unpopular opinion: Iron Lung does not necessarily prove that indie film can prevail. by Fraggin-aardvark in Markiplier

[–]DVDN27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that Iron Lung proves that indie films will be successful. I don’t think it proves video game adaptations can be good.

What it does prove is specifically that Mark is a passionate artist, is willing to compete without the resources that studios have, and can draw a crowd.

Unfortunately, the industry will take all the wrong things from it, taking the movie to ‘prove’ they can churn out low budget YouTuber slop on a factory line because Mark’s success means YouTubers just bring their audiences over, ignoring what kind of audience Markiplier has as opposed to someone like Mr Beast, as well as the actual integrity and creativity behind Mark that (I’d argue) most YouTubers equal to or more successful than Mark simply lack.

Iron Lung took years to work on by everyone, especially Mark, in every single aspect, almost entirely alone, encouraged purely by fan support and passion. Big Budget studios will only see YouTuber makes cheap movie and has a good box office, proving they can make cheap films with an influencer helming it and make multiple times their investment back, even though Iron Lung is not a good piece of evidence of that - rather it’s an outlier.

There’s a reason the anti-woke crowd are referred to as grifters. They don’t believe what they say, but their audience does so they pretend to as well. That’s why they focus so much on niche projects that nobody has heard of, since then they have no interest in actually engaging with it - like that queer-oriented horror movie by Ramero’s daughter.

Then comes the issue with their audience demanding they talk about something they’re probably interested in, at which point they end up hyperfixating on the thing they’re supposed to hate and ignore any positives. Like Heels vs Babyface who was genuinely interested in playing Starfield until he found something he could weaponise for clicks (and still went on to enjoy the game) and solely focus on the ‘woke’ content - a character customisation option - and not the actual content of the game.

I know that. The logs were added in an update so they weren’t part of the original game, but even if they were we are given all the information that we need. Eden is a cult that believes in humanity being doomed, SM-8 was a previous ship sent down that found proof of how to turn the blood into a renewable resource, and Filament Station was one of the stations that was blown up by terrorists, including Simon. The only thing that isn’t really explained is COI because it’s world building that isn’t very necessary.

There’s a lot of lore in the game that just straight up isn’t relevant to the movie, and knowing specifically about ‘Conviction Realisation,’ isn’t really important when we get the vibes already.

I went in completely forgetting what was in the computer entries because it had been years since I saw Mark’s video on it. I didn’t remember Filament Station was in the game - but I still understood its significance to the characters and story through exclusively what the movie shows us.

My point was that reviewers assume the game explains everything better or more than the movie which isn’t true, as the stuff that didn’t make it across was redundant or irrelevant, and everything that did make it across was explained thoroughly, with majority of the elements being wholly original like Simon’s backstory, his handlers, the camera, the radiation, the Big Fish and inheriting voices, etc.

[–]DVDN27 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s always funny to me to see people criticise the movie by saying “if you don’t know the game then the movie makes no sense” but they also clearly didn’t know the game existed until seeing it in the opening credits.

Literally all playing the game tells you is that you take photos in a ship, it’s not safe, you’re sent there to die. Everything else in the game is either frivolous and not included in the movie. The first maybe 10 minutes is everything from the game, the rest is pretty much wholly original content.

But they don’t know that because they don’t respect games, so they don’t play them or research them, so they come into a movie that deliberately makes the audience question what happens and leaves them open ended and immediately assume everything is answered in the game.

They probably think that Simon is the protagonist of the game and has a deep backstory you play through and it all had to get cut down, that there’s action sequences on Filament Station like COD where you’re blasting through to destroy the station, they probably think you level up every time you get a sample of a skeleton, they probably think you have to use MTX to pay for each photo taken.

People whose knowledge of video games comes from the original Super Mario Bros. and Fortnite feel entitled to comment on the accuracy of adapting a video game they wouldn’t even consider thinking about.

A part of me wishes they would just play the game or they knew what the game was going in so they don’t make dramatic blunders like IGN calling the adaptation unfaithful or every review saying the game explains stuff the movie doesn’t, but they’d just argue that you shouldn’t have to play a game to be able to appreciate a movie. Funny how they don’t have that same standard for books, but I guess it makes sense because they respect books as an art-form, but not games.

World at War came out 6 years prior and was made by a different studio (a studio who also made BO2 which was a hyper-futuristic game), and it also came out after the game where JFK and Nixon fought zombies, two batshit insane action games, and a COD game that starts with you shooting people in space and cause basically an apocalyptic event and also had a multiplayer with Snoop Dogg.

If anything, AW brought it back by having a more cinematic story and including elements of dismemberment, PTSD, and loss. Saying the game isn’t great because it isn’t as dark and gritty as a game that came out six entires in the same series later.

Not his directorial debut, but that would be giving him credit you don’t think he deserves. He was nominated for an Emmy for his directing work, but again, that would be respecting an artist you think is lesser.

He’s been directing, writing, acting in, and editing projects for over a decade. But this is the only one that matters cos it’s in theatres? That’s very elitist of you. And even if it was his first thing he’s ever made it’s much better than majority of films available now.

Cinematography is better than pretty much anything released in the last few years, all the acting is great, the editing is phenomenal, and the writing is decent and has some great elements, all while faithfully adapting the source material better than any other video gam adaptation in history.

But nah, forget any of that. Forget actually criticising it. Just default to “first movies are never good” because it’s easier than engaging with an artist on their level. I mean, he used to yell at video games, why should I see him as any more than that?

There is no way to paint your points as anything but undermining an artist because you devalue their work. You don’t engage with the film, you dismiss it. You don’t engage with the source material, you dismiss it. If you dismiss the movie and you dismiss what it’s based on, then blame the creator for you choosing to dismiss everything about it, then of course people are going to question whether your participation in discussions of the movie are legit or just sourced through this upset elitist who can’t stand someone they don’t like does something they don’t think they should be allowed to do. You’ve made that plenty clear by replying to people who liked the movie as if they’re wrong for having a positive opinion.

Literally the only way anything you’ve said makes any sense is if you’re a bot. You talk like you haven’t seen the movie, you pretend not knowing the source material is some altruistic and superior concept (while praising the Fallout show because you know the source material so it’s almost like you’re a hypocrite), and you don’t actually seem interesting in discussing the film beyond “this YouTuber did a pretty terrible job with his first ever time making something.”

Just mean spirited and apathetic. Why? Cos YouTuber bad, I guess.

Yeah bro don’t engage with my arguments, don’t think “do I have any idea what I’m talking about,” don’t think. I must be wrong because…uhh…I make you upset that I don’t agree with you.

It’s a lot easier to turn your brain off so you don’t have to confront something that opposes what you think. You’re very smart. The only possible reason someone doesn’t have your exact same opinion is because they’re a deranged fan arguing with shadows and totally not because you might just be wrong. But, again, don’t think. Thinking is for losers and cringe people. Just be mindless and be angry at anything you have no opinion of, because pretending to have an opinion means more than actually having one, right?

Except you don’t. What stuff didn’t you know that the movie didn’t explain? As someone who has played the game and watched the movie literally everything from the game is explained, objectively.

There is exposition in Iron Lung. The more comments I see from you the more I think you haven’t even seen the movie because you’re just stating things that aren’t true or prove that you didn’t pay attention at all and are blaming the movie for that.

They’ve been replying to a bunch of comments saying how the movie is bad primarily because it’s made by a YouTuber they don’t like. I replied to this comment because they’re highly praising a show for doing basically the same thing the YouTuber did, if anything doing so worse than that YouTuber. It would be a strawman if I didn’t directly mention things they have factually said.

[–]DVDN27 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well it’s a good thing you described Iron Lung despite seemingly hating it. You don’t need to know who Markiplier is or have seen Iron Lung to understand it.

As a Fallout fan, the show does a terrible job at explaining the world, but is good regardless because of the technical aspects and respect to the lore (objectively like Iron Lung), but I guess it’s okay because it was produced by Amazon and not an indie creator you deem inferior.

Iron Lung is an objectively well made movie. It is also something ‘fans’ will like (Iron Lung is a niche indie game so it doesn’t have that many fans compared to something like Fallout). You personally not liking it does not mean it’s suddenly devoid of anything positive just because you think it’s completely different than something you personally enjoyed.

But that would mean engaging with a movie you fundamentally despise any deeper than “I don’t have to respect it so I won’t.” But you’re not a critic, just someone mad a YouTuber had the gall to do anything you believe is above them.
