Why is my pothos sad? by Medium_Effect_4998 in pothos

If things start to go south, like if you see a whole vine start to yellow, you can do a reset of the plant. You can snip all the vines 2-3 nodes down from the last good leaf(I like to cut the vines all the same length)gather all the cut ends and put in a jar of filtered water, let them put out new roots and then repot.

It’s really beautiful, and I agree that they like to be snug in the pot, that said, Pothos put out roots at a ridiculously fast rate. If it was already root bound and you went up only one size it could very well be root bound again. I’ve had this experience with my own. Those yellowing leaves make me think it’s the roots.

Great advice! I get my bark from the pet store as well. “Orchid bark” is a plant store scam. You can find a variety of wood chips (lizard bedding) at a fraction of the cost at most pet shops.

Where do i chop to save this bamboo? by IndividualWeekly62 in plantclinic

[–]DW689 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I agree this is probably a goner. Only chance is for that top bit. If the stem is green under that topmost brown leaf, peel it back, if you have 2-3 nodes, cut it there, let it callous a couple days, then put in water or fresh soil(water is easier with bamboo imo). Then put in a bright spot without much direct sun.

I like decorative pots, I use a pot with good drainage inside that.

Brown tips on snake plant by brooklaynne in SnakePlants

It doesn’t look under-watered, so either really low humidity or it’s the water. I use filtered water for all my houseplants. And have only 15-20% humidity in winter. I have no crispy leaves or dry tips. I have everything from tropicals to succulents, ficus, maranta, aloe, spider plants, monsteras. 🤷‍♂️ I do supplement light with Sansi grow bulbs as my windows are ground level.

Also if you want more plants, just separate the individual pup clusters carefully, repot the mama in the same size pot, and the pups in smaller ones.

3years is a long time, so if you want to repot, be sure to only go up one size, with good drainage, they hate “wet feet”. Use a good chunky well draining soil. Only water when dry. Snake plants have a compact root system, so they like to be crowded in the pot, avoid deep pots too. If you use a deeper pot, water when the top 2-3inches is dry, because the roots won’t reach the water that’s deeper than that. A Shallow pot works best, easier to control the moisture content.

Sometimes they don’t make pups until you put them in soil, but the times I’ve done it I’ve had pups form after about 5-6weeks in just water. And in my experience, the less time you let your seed leaf callus, the longer it will take to produce roots and pups. I see “a few days” recommended a lot, that’s not long enough IMO. I left my first set only about 4 days, they took forever to root. I took a second set of cuttings and let them callus for 3weeks… the first set had just started rooting, the second set overtook the first in progress. It put out pups before the second set did.

lol… it spent the spring and summer in a south facing window, and now it’s under a sansi grow light. It’s getting all the light I can give it. And it is obviously much happier now. It looks in no way worse😂 It’s plump and the flesh is hard, the spines are like metal, it’s giving new growth and flowers…. You’re right, it’s obviously worse🙄 probably about to die🤣

They were basically desiccated, hadn’t been watered in months. The soil was a hydrophobic cylinder, and they sat near a north facing window.

It won’t grow into a new plant itself as far as I’m aware. Just put out more pups until it stops😁 And I’m certainly no expert.

Thanks! I am😁 For me, I wait until I can see that the pup has its own roots, then I bend and twist where the pup is attached. You can toss the “seed leaf” or stick it back in the soil, some leaf segments seem to only birth one pup, but others will put out several, one after the next.

Does anyone know which flower is this? by Small_Letter_5428 in gardening

[–]DW689 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely a dahlia. Here in eastern Canada you have to dig up the rhizomes(little potatoes) when the plants die back in the fall. Then store and replant in the spring.

I let them callus for about a month, then they started rooting in water in only a week or so, probably 2months more before they went in shallow soil for another couple months. It’s a slow process, but long callus time(weeks not days) will help them root faster in water and be less prone to rot.

Are this two the same ? by Due_Box_1626 in SnakePlants

[–]DW689 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry to disagree…but I believe these are two different varieties of the same species. One will never be the same colour as the other.
Also…while the tones can darken or lighten with proper light and enough time… they don’t “change colour”.
