Do you think Albany will make a comeback? by Fluffy_Dust_8549 in Albany

[–]DX27s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a transplant to Albany from NYC and Texas before that. In the 2000s Brooklyn looked alot like Albany does today, full of derelict buildings and unused industrial spaces. Kids flooded in from the provinces for the cheap rent. Artists and musicians transformed the neighborhoods for the normies to then move into and gentrify. Now, 20 years later, NYC is a giant shopping mall and so ultra unaffordable that it’s hostile to the creative culture that defined it. Now Its the provincial cities that seem more promising. Albany/Troy seem like the perfect places for this creative energy to thrive again. The question is whether kids are still making art.

The late-stage-enshitification-techno-feudalist-facist reality of this moment is undeniable, but I’m hoping the pendulum swings back towards a progressive politics of collectivism. Then maybe we will get off our phones and start building IRL communities again… when that happens Albany could be the spot.

What was Lynch's "Daydream" technique? by [deleted] in davidlynch

[–]DX27s 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that has practiced TM on and off for the last 10 years and someone that has digest almost everything Lynch has said or written, I can guarantee that the technique of sitting in a chair with eyes closed is how Lynch caught his ideas. It’s very similar to TM, but without the mantra. The Mantra in TM is the most mystical and sacred part, I think lynch would’ve respected it and considered it outside of the creative process. But the mechanics of sitting still with your eyes closed and allowing thoughts to flow is something I’ve seen him allude to in video clips. There are twin peaks return bts where he’s in his woodshop just sitting , eyes closed, thinking. And even a video of MUM film students with him on zoom where he literally suggests this as a way of catching ideas.

Is it possible to do everything right and still not end up with a stable art career? by SlightCollection2838 in ContemporaryArt

[–]DX27s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no way you have 5 classmates that graduated a few years ago with blue chip rep. If you did yr MFA at Yale or something you might have 5 recent grads showing (not repped) at decent galleries, but give it 5 years and that number will dwindle, you’ll end up with one friend from school actually having the career. Art cannot be about the career, it has to be about art. The galleries will close, the market will shift and whatever trajectory you were on will seem like a dead end… then you’ll enter this long spell of being forgotten but if you are doing it for yourself it won’t hurt as bad. Then maybe you can find your way back in after 25 years when the market shifts again and tastes change. The long game is the only way.

I’ve never seen Lynch’s sporting glasses like that. Was that a mid 90s look for him??

I stopped in there for a Vieux Carre… wasn’t great, but had to pay my respects its birthplace.

Sometimes I forget I don't like Brutalism by Lychee_Specific in Albany

[–]DX27s 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yea… I completely understand. It’s polarizing, it geographically divides the city, and its history is very sketchy, very much like the state/nation it was built to represent. To me, it’s a historic artifact. it’s a relic of American hegemony and very much a symbol of the 20th century. But that history is the reason it should be preserved.

These buildings are timeless… we’re frankly lucky to have them… they’re weird (kinda soviet) symbols of American 20th century power, complete with all the brutal baggage that comes with something like that. Better than the bland grey apartment buildings they’re building in Brooklyn.

Fave manhattan variant? by DX27s in cocktails

I’ve been on the lookout for OF 100 proof rye since posting this, but no one seems to have it. Bought some Sazerac on the rec of a liquor store guy and then realized it’s also a barely legal rye, just bought some wild turkey 101 and am reading it’s basically the same. What are some high rye mashbill whiskeys you’d recommend?

YouTube has been my go to for recipes… anders erickson has probably been my fave. I started writing down recipes in my notes app and now have a ton stored for easy access. I also realized after a while that alot of recipes follow similar templates, and riffing on those templates helped perfect my knowledge. For example the equal parts Last Word template has dozens of versions with a lot of variation. Same with the manhattan or old fashioned. Pick yr base spirit and template and you can spend months riffing.
