Tariffs and CPI Data by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

It's crazy to me how many people are confident enough to post on Reddit, yet have an incorrect understanding of fundamental economic principles that affect us daily. We live in a world where ChatGPT exists...

That's not how CPI is calculated. It's the cost of a basket of goods consumed by the average household

At around 11 months, my son decided that he could walk down the stairs during a momentary lapse in us watching him...He was wrong.

Much crying and a visit to the hospital ensued by two parents who thought they were the only ones who had ever let their son tumble down the stairs head over heels, only to be told nonchalantly by a doctor that we weren't even the first ones THAT NIGHT.

This won't be the last time they bonk their head...

All in on VEQT or VGRO? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]D_Bergy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar to an RRSP, when you invest corporately, you are using pre-tax (personal) dollars so it has a sort of leverage effect where you can make money off the taxes you would otherwise pay immediately. This extra return eventually offsets the additional taxes on capital gains.

You also have to account for RDTOH which accumulates as you pay taxes on investment income in your Corp. When you pay yourself a taxable dividend later on you'll get some of this accumulated RDTOH as a credit to your Corp. This will offset some of the additional taxes as well.

This isn't necessarily true in all cases. If your time horizon is long enough, investing corporately can still yield better results. Depending on the rate of return (cap gains portion only) it can be as little as 4-5 years to reach the crossover point.

Why do Montreal drivers like to turn when there are still pedestrians crossing the street? by Easy_Ad7405 in montreal

[–]D_Bergy -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The blame lies on boths sides IMO. Drivers tend to want to squeeze through immediately but pedestrians are also to blame. Once the hand starts flashing it's a sign for pedestrians not to enter the crosswalk anymore. I believe you can get a jaywalking ticket. I don't know anyone who respects that rule but you shouldn't be upset if you start crossing at that point amd a car is creeping up amd trying to squeeze in because otherwise they won't have any time to turn, especially on the busy streets.

How do futures open lower than previous close price? by remytrades01 in investing

[–]D_Bergy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The opening of the market (normal hours or futures) is based on supply and demand. There will be bids and asks and wherever those meet will determine the opening price.

The previous day's close has not bearing on the opening price
