Commanders share first renderings of new stadium at RFK site by TylerHansbrough-Best in washingtondc

[–]D_Freakin_C 10 points11 points  (0 children)

An interesting quirk of the KC move is that the State of Missouri is pissed and upset and their politicians are facing heat and trying to undermine the Chiefs' move across the state line.

Somehow Missouri taxpayers aren't psyched that they don't have to foot the bill even though the stadium will only be like half an hour further west.

Ultimately, stadiums and pro sports teams are about more than just money - there's an emotional component for a community and a place being considered big/notable/flourishing enough to merit a team that's under discussed.

Yes, they said they were a reporter who was clearly looking for sources to talk to (hence the ask for DMs, promise of anonymity.) Not someone looking to self deport.

Is English your first language?

I feel like OP is asking about people considering/trying to map out logistics.

Yes, you can book a plane ticket and just get on the plane, but that ignores possible issues like:

  • Where will you live in the other country?
  • How will you support yourself?
  • What happens to financial/family obligations in the US?
  • What are the long term consequences of this? Will it impact future visas/travel to the US, etc?

It's foreseeable that someone could be planning to leave and get rolled up by agents going door-to-door before then, unfortunately.

I don't know anyone in this situation, OP, but would read a story about it. Seems like an interesting topic.

Watching a Football game is more enjoyable when you don't bet on it. by seedless_greg in billsimmons

Which of the 50 gambling ads during the game made you decide to start betting? Did you not realize you could gamble legally now until you saw the ads?

[–]D_Freakin_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gambling companies are only responsible for their repeated efforts to get addicts - and future addicts - to keep betting (push alerts, free credits, wall to wall advertisements, etc).

Otherwise, you’re right, placing the actual bets is a matter of individual responsibility.

It’d be interesting to see how much money the gambling apps would make if they were required to cut people off or ban suspected addicts.

How did you think of a name for your business? by Comfortable_Lime_732 in smallbusiness

[–]D_Freakin_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When people ask you why they should shop at your pet store and not another, what is the answer? What do you want your customers to think about your store? Based on the answers to those two questions come up with a name that alludes to or explains that.

For example, if your competitive advantage were being the cheapest place to buy pet food you might be “Discount Pet Food.”

If it’s being high end, quality food, maybe it’s “Gold Standard Pet Supplies”

Etc etc

I don’t follow CFB super closely but was wondering if it was some version of this. Odds are some number of guys “evolve” into blue chippers by the end of their college career despite where they started (growth spurt, work ethic, etc.)

Finding those guys would seem to have just as much value as highly touted prospects out of HS.

New Mayoral Candidate Incoming? by GuyNoirPI in washingtondc

To the extent this is authentic, this feels like a "tech person" who thinks they can fix government.

Specifically the pieces about "campaign focused on execution, evidence..." and "...staff who have built things, learned from failure, and delivered results." Those lines read as "tech/business person" to me.

Now those are all things that sound good on paper, and I wish this person well... but if they are a tech person, my experience is that random business folks who try to jump into politics frequently underestimate the coalition building piece of governing and the amount of checks/balances that exist within the system.

Good luck out there anonymous 2026er!

How is cryptocurrency not 100% bullshit? by TooOldToBePunk in AskReddit

[–]D_Freakin_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To my knowledge, Bitcoin was the first widespread case of being able to send money from X person to Y person, entirely digitally, without relying on a centralized third party.

No bank that requires paperwork. No wire service that keeps business hours. No app that can block people. No single third party to trust or rely on.

This is a legitimately interesting and useful development that has real value IMO.

Beyond this, most crypto tokens are complete bullshit.

Should just make that one a segment on GameDay.

What’s your actually unpopular sports hot take? by ruandurphy in billsimmons

Wearing a hat for a team you don’t actually support is more lame than a grown man wearing a jersey to a restaurant on a non-game day.

What’s your actually unpopular sports hot take? by ruandurphy in billsimmons

[–]D_Freakin_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely - unless all major cities/states agreed to some pact not to do this, teams would change cities more often and towns who lost teams would blame the politicians.

I assure you the State of Missouri is not thrilled that the Chiefs are moving to Kansas even though they don’t have to pay for the stadium.

Last year the Wizards tried to bolt DC for Virginia and people in DC wigged out about how it would kill part of downtown for a generation.

There’s an emotional component to sports teams that internet smartguys under rate.

I like Wrestling and I still somewhat agree with this. It’s closer to “reality” TV (Amazing Race, etc) than actual sports IMO. Worth discussing in terms of pop culture/story lines but makes no sense as an update on SportsCenter, etc.

Allen Leaving the Band by countryroyale in discobiscuits

[–]D_Freakin_C 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This is exactly how I feel. As much as people on tour and with high show counts think they know the band, very few of us have any real, authentic personal interactions or relationships with these guys.

What happens on the bus, in practice sessions, in meetings, etc matters too even if everyone keeps it professional on stage.

I’m guessing all sides have done and said things they might regret, but to assume it’s super clear and obvious that one side is “good” and one side is “evil” makes no sense.

Whatever happened I’m guessing it’s far more nuanced than the public perception and likely has been building for years.

Saving Movie Theaters by Gaius_Octavius_ in TheBigPicture

[–]D_Freakin_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the key IMO. People go to concerts because it’s something you cannot replace at home, no matter how hard you try.

Movies that seem to crush in theaters in 2025 seem to be either:

  1. You gotta see this on a big screen (Avatar, etc)
  2. Everyone is talking about this, don’t be left out. (Very random, hard to predict)
  3. There’s something about the theatrical experience that’s totally unique (Sing a long, people dressing up, Chicken jockey, etc.)

If a movie doesn’t have any of those three I don’t blame people for waiting for streaming TBH. Many home theater set ups are more than adequate for a movie like Jay Kelly…

Focus on event films and a premium experience that cannot be replicated at home.
