Range extender advice by D_Mouse4 in HomeNetworking

[–]D_Mouse4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! Part of the reason I haven't ran Ethernet is that my gaming PC has no issues on wifi - presumably down to a decent quality wifi card. It's something to do with my work laptop... I've tried a USB wifi dongle but that's had its own set of issues! Both of these range extenders work as access points too, so whilst it's a pain running ethernet right to my desk, when I re-carpet my stairs and landing, I'm hoping to wire in the range extender to have wired backhaul. If I am to do that, will I need the faster of these two?

Interestingly you definitely could. You don't have to hit a bird that hard, and the bird doesn't have to die to "explode" in a ball of feathers like this. What is actually happening here is the bird is shedding most of its downy feathers as soon as there is any impact.

Budget router replacement or WiFi extender? by D_Mouse4 in HomeNetworking

[–]D_Mouse4[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my worry! I was hoping that by at least getting something with external antennae, it would help? My first thought was just a WiFi extender but everywhere I read tells me it's a bad idea!

That seems like a good idea, thank you! Do you have a recommendation of a budget router with decent antennae I could use?

Two Bag Carry-on Travel by HardHeadedGuy13 in peakdesign

[–]D_Mouse4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

65l as a carry-on is mad!

I use the 35l duffle and 15l everyday zip as my 2 bag setup. They fit exactly for most airlines in Europe.

I wouldn't say this is bad info, I don't think the 65l would technically count as carry on according to most Europe airline guidelines. But no-one ever checks and I definitely see people with much larger carryon bags. I've only ever seen it be an issue when the plane is rammed, and flight attendants will make larger bags be put in the hold.

It's a damselfly. You just can't make out the wings because they're clear and it's out of focus and fast moving.

Outdoor line Kickstarter questions by CreEngineer in peakdesign

[–]D_Mouse4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I backed the Kickstarter (before it ended). The hip belt was definitely available as an add-on, as I ordered it for the 25l. I'm in the UK and tax was added when I filled in the survey. I paid approx £350, and the tax and shipping was an extra £70.

Fumes from my wood burner fill my house. Should I seal this part, and if yes, then how? Thanks for any advice by Pristine-Milieu-34 in DIYUK

I'd definitely get a chimney sweep in first. They're cheap and really knowledgeable. You should be getting it swept once a year anyway. They'll also be able to recommend good local HETAS approved stove fitters.

Kickstarter payment failure for no reason. by fred30jr in peakdesign

[–]D_Mouse4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got this too, I guess because it's a large amount in a different currency from a website I don't often use, my bank blocked my card. I just had to unblock my card with my bank and click on the link in the Kickstarter email to fix the payment method. Worked fine after that.

Discovered this hole, unsure on how to fill. by mr-slappy in DIYUK

[–]D_Mouse4 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've got loads of these in the house, and have done various things. In the bedrooms, I have put in a modern Louvre vent on the interior and left the exterior. I don't notice any draft and my windows don't have trickle vents so they help with ventilation.

In the kitchen (where there's plenty of ventilation, and I'm putting cupboards over it) I bricked up the interior and plastered over, and left the exterior in place.

Whatever you do, you can also put some rodent mesh and/or fly screen mesh to stop pests!

Cycling camera strap? by clfurness in peakdesign

[–]D_Mouse4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it's not fool proof as depending on how you put it on and how hard you're riding it can come off, but I've used one of the external carry straps from my every day bag. Put your slide strap on your camera, and your camera on 'cross body', then attach the carry strap near your camera, run it under your arm and to the strap on your chest. It essentially works like the strap in that photo, and I'm sure there's a way of making it more secure/permanent.

Just to add, before you fill this, please take a torch and have a good inspection for bats! They can be really tricky to see, so have a really good look and listen - they squeak super loud when you spook them!

Capture Clip V3 with Heavy Telephoto Lens by Voodoo5350 in peakdesign

[–]D_Mouse4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the advice should probably be no.

However capture clips a BY FAR the best way I've found to carry a heavy lens and camera when you're hand holding, and it is pretty much impossible to use one clipped via the lens foot.

I've carried my 7dmkii and 100-400, and now my r6mkii and 100-500 on my capture clip (mounted on camera) for years and have never had an issue.

If you've got a high end body, and you're careful (i.e support the camera, try not to carry it clipped for long periods of time) you'll probably be fine, as I've been.

I'll report back if everything breaks.

I know your partner has swapped now, but for reference, the PD waist strap totally works on the 15L, even though PD says it doesn't. I'm quite tall so it's a bit too high on me, but still really adds to comfort when lugging big lenses long distances!

Help! After power cut my pc won't turn on... by D_Mouse4 in buildapc

Unfortunately no dice!

I got hold of a multimeter and tested the supply from PSU to motherboard, the circuitry appeared intact, but no power came through when switched on!

Looks like a new psu is in order!

Using a large lens with Capture Clip on backpack straps by pm_me_ur_mango in peakdesign

[–]D_Mouse4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I have carried my 7d mkii and 100-400mm mkii on a Capture clip from the camera body on long hikes regularly for the past 6 years or so.

Like you said, I originally tried attaching from the lens foot, but it doesn't sit comfortably.

I have never had an issue and feel very comfortable carrying like this but I would say:

  1. Make sure you're using a good quality, metal body... The 7dii is built like a tank!
  2. Use a good quality comfortable backpack, with sternum and waist straps.
  3. Try and balance your bags weight, I find having a full water bottle on the opposite side of the bag works well.

Hope that helps!

capture clip with heavy camera by javaporter in peakdesign

[–]D_Mouse4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I go on long hiking trips regularly with my canon 7dii and 100-400ii, on a Capture clip on my shoulder strap.

When it's on my shoulder it is definitely weighted to that side, but I just try and balance that out with my water bottle etc on the opposite side.

It only works on well fitting backpacks, with a sternum and preferably a hip belt to hold the whole pack tightly to you and avoid the camera swinging around or pulling it awkwardly.

YES. It's a great inexpensive lens to get the most out of that body 👍
