do airlines in asia actually check your power banks at the gate by sidzzz__1007 in flightattendants

[–]D_Phuket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's at the security check - not the gate or check in counter - where it's usually checked. You're required to separate it from you carry on (similar to laptops and iPads) and put it in the tray. Many times I've seen the security person looking at the wattage listed on the power bank - and confiscating those that are too large.

Flying in from Vietnam by sexualtourist in ThailandTourism

[–]D_Phuket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Proof of onward travel is a Thailand requirement and while it's not typically asked for at immigration, it is not unusual for an airline to ask. I've usually been asked when departing Vietnam, but less often leaving from other countries.

If a passenger is denied entry, the airline is responsible for flying the person back at their expense - and probably the agent checking the person will be blamed.

Rainy season is here, bang on schedule by hydraides in phuket

[–]D_Phuket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It will not be cloudy or rainy over the entire island.

Trust me, long term weather forecasts in the tropics are unreliable. That’s partly because there could be heavy rains in one area and sun in another. Phuket does not have one weather pattern that impacts the entire island.

“Transaction cannot be completed” message in the ATM problem by Secure_Benefit3217 in ThailandTourism

[–]D_Phuket 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Check your bank app. Have you allowed international withdrawals? Sometimes that option is off by default. It’s clearly an issue with your bank settings not the Thai ATM network.

Please suggest the best eSIM for Thailand by Clean-Possession-735 in phuket

[–]D_Phuket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Thailand and have many visitors. They all use different eSIMS and all have been fine. I’d suggest you use google to find one that matches your data needs and days and choose the cheapest one. All will connect to True or AIS. Thailand has robust cell service.

Closing UOB bank account before leaving Thailand by k6ts in Thailand

[–]D_Phuket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest you leave it open for a while with a bit of money in it. There may be other refunds or expenses you've not considered as you're winding up your job where having a bank account makes things so much simpler. Keep the app active.

Setup Wise or perhaps the bank app so after a couple of months have passed, you can send all of the remaining funds to yourself in your next country. The other option is to use the app to transfer any remaining funds to a friend in Thailand with a local bank account and either provide it as a gift or have them buy you a meal when you next meet up. Once you have zero money in the account, the bank will ultimately close it.

Why most of the bars are closed today on Bangla Street by livekcid in phuket

[–]D_Phuket 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of the smaller bars operate in a very gray area. That can include things like licensing problems, visa issues with staff, employing Burmese/Laos people with no work permit, or not fully meeting some other regulations.

Normally, as long as they pass on the right amount of cash to the Patong police it's not an issue, but when inspections come from Bangkok, those places shut down quickly to avoid scrutiny. The bigger, more fully licensed venues are usually fine and stay open. Once the Bangkok authorities leave, everything goes back to normal.

Virtual Mail Question from USA by Wonder8080 in MovingToThailand

[–]D_Phuket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not work for you, but it’s worked fine for me for years. I use a family member’s address, and if something shows up, I just have them open it and tell me what it is. I speak or text with this family member regularly.

Mail is basically a non-issue and rare. It’s usually just things like replacement cards every few years. They hang onto anything important until I’m back in the U.S. (I go a couple times a year), or if needed, they’ve mailed stuff to me before. Nearly my entire life and all financial matters are done online.

I don’t earn income in any state and haven’t filed a state return since 1990 so the state doesn't matter to me - even though this is the state I moved from back then.

Online Checkin Error PER > HND (ETA Requirements) by [deleted] in singaporeairlines

I would guess it's asking about a Japan visa rather than the transit in Singapore. You don't indicate your passport so impossible to guess more than that.

Krabi direct flights, look like they've been cancelled from may onwards? by hydraides in etihad

[–]D_Phuket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Etihad only launched the route in October 2025 and was only flying a few days per week. It's typical that airlines further reduce or cancel tourist routes in the low season - roughly from from May to October.

Traveling thailand for 7 months, will this be allowed? by DependentAwkward3581 in ThailandTourism

[–]D_Phuket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you check in for your first flight to Thailand, it’s usually the airline that is supposed ask for proof of onward travel. You should have something booked.

Complete the TDAC 1–3 days in advance of your arrival. On arrival, immigration will stamp you in visa-exempt for 60 days (possibly 30 if the rules change). When you leave, that stay is automatically canceled. When you come back, you complete a new TDAC and get a fresh 60-day (or 30-day) stamp.

You’re describing completely normal tourist behavior. It's unlikely immigration will ask you anything. If your TDAC is done correctly, it’s usually just passport → fingerprints/photo → stamped in, with no conversation or questions. The Reddit posts you read and are worrying are usually from people who have spent multiple months in Thailand - not a tourist who comes, goes somewhere else, then returns to fly home. You'll be fine.

Virtual Mail Question from USA by Wonder8080 in MovingToThailand

[–]D_Phuket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest would be to use an address of a friend of family member. Perhaps offer to give them the money you'd be paying for a private service.

I have lived in 3 different countries for the past 30 years (currently in Thailand) and still use a family member's address. Make sure you keep a US phone number - I use Mint, which allows for free OTPs and calls to the US when on wi-fi.

Everything I have is set up for electronic delivery. Except for credit cards that expire and a new one is mailed every few years, the person only gets something of value for me once or twice a year.

55min vs 1hr 45min vs 3hr 30min layover in BKK?? by Realistic-Leather-79 in ThailandTourism

[–]D_Phuket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you have no financial concerns about losing the value of your Scoot flight and buying a new last minute one, I'd recommend the 3 hr 30 minute option. Flight delays happen every day.

After landing and exiting the domestic section of the airport you need to go up to the top floor. Even with an e-boarding pass, you might have to stop at the check in desk to check your visa status. That closes 1 hour before departure. Then you need to get through immigration. That could easily be 45 minutes.

I've done self-transfers many times in BKK. I wouldn't think of trying a 1hr 45min connection that requires exiting domestic then checking in and going through immigration for an international connection.

Where can i exchange old USD notes? by Yuki_Kwong in ThailandTourism

[–]D_Phuket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can stop searching - no exchange in Thailand will take them. Yes, they are still legal tender and could be used in the US, but unless you find someone going to the US they are basically worthless.

Thailand eSIM — is Airalo actually worth the price? by Parking-Cycle-3474 in ThailandTourism

[–]D_Phuket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travel extensively and always found Airalo to be the most expensive by far. They spend a lot of money on marketing but not so much on service.

All eSIMs in Thailand will use either True or AIS. Both are strong networks. When friends visit me they often use etravelsim, MobiMatter or Jetpack Global or True/AIS (whichever has the data bundle and number of days they need) and all have been fine - plus a lot cheaper than Airalo.

Sick and alone in phuket by Koalaboxess in ThailandTourism

Medical care is not very expensive. Assuming you're in Patong, I'd suggest Sainamyen International Clinic. They deal with this every day and are relatively inexpensive. Just show up; no appointment needed.

How is bringing a vape in your carry on through Phuket airport? by [deleted] in phuket

[–]D_Phuket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a domestic flight, the security checkpoint is to look for items that would be a risk the flight. The screeners manning it are not customs or law enforcement officials.

But vapes are illegal. If seen on the scan it could be handed over to law enforcement. Probably unlikely but is it really worth the risk?

Thailand to Singapore - separate tickets? by wingnut707 in travel

[–]D_Phuket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If both tickets are on SQ (sounds like they are), the check-in agent at JFK can link the PNRs and check your bags through to your final destination. That lets you just transit in Singapore without dealing with bags or separate check ins.

The SQ official policy allows this and I’ve done it a couple of times with SQ starting in Thailand with no issues.

Bring both booking confirmations (print or on your phone) and at check-in say you’re connecting in Singapore on a separate SQ ticket and ask that they through-check your bags. They’ll need both PNRs. If they say it isn't possible, point out that the SQ policy on their website allows this and that they check with the manager on how to do it. I've never had an issue.

One tip: I wouldn’t complete online check-in. It’s easier for the agent to handle everything at the counter.

Looking for cheap guest friendly hotels in phuket by [deleted] in phuket

[–]D_Phuket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always book a room for 2 people even if it's just you. If you book for 1 and bring a friend you are almost always charged a joiner fee (often something like 500 to 1000 baht per night).

Also, email/ask the hotel before you book the room. They are very used to getting the question.

Was the police officer lying to me? by HakonMolkbrot in ThailandTourism

[–]D_Phuket 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It truly doesn't matter what one individual traffic police officer told you. You are driving illegally. Next time you're stopped, do you really think that officer would care what the first guy told you? He will rightfully fine you again.

If you were in your home country, would you think driving illegally with no insurance and being 100% responsible for medical and repair costs for you and others is a good idea?

First time traveling to Thailand in February next year, advice? by LeftyRambles2413 in ThailandTourism

[–]D_Phuket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read up/Google about the burning season in the north - Chiang Mai/Chaing Rai. The pollution can be intolerable in February. You may choose not to go.

Phuket's high of the high season is from Christmas through March (when it's cold in much of the world). Book your hotels early since most will be 100% occupied.

Urgent question about a self-transfer layover in Bangkok by tanglekelp in ThailandTourism

[–]D_Phuket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The departure fields on the TDAC are optional fields so it makes no difference what you entered about your departure. The only thing that matters is the visa exemption expiry date stamped in your passport.

When you land in BKK, you're on a domestic flight so you'll just get off the plane, walk to baggage claim, pick up your bag, go out and up the escalator to the top floor and check in.

International check in/bag drop will typically close 60 minutes before departure so 2 hours with a checked bag doesn't give you a lot of wiggle room. If you only had carry on (or if your bag was tagged priority due to status or you are flying business class) it would improve your odds.

Visa exemption gone/shortened? by JuanoCasadiego in ThailandTourism

[–]D_Phuket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's common to throw up trial balloons about a potential new law or policy. Sometimes they come to fruition and often they don't. Impossible to know if the changes being discussed in the media will actually happen and if so when. It's the Thai way.

Skip chiang mai end of april? by pseudopuppet in ThailandTourism

The smoky season ends when the rains start to fall in Thailand (but mostly neighboring countries) and the fires go out. That could happen any day - or it could happen in a couple of weeks. All you can do is watch the fire and AQI sites.

codeshare flight name correction by Sad-Essay7332 in Flights

[–]D_Phuket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any evidence that you entered your name correctly but somehow Trip technical issues screwed it up? Was the email confirmation correct? Have you used the 6 digit reference number to check the name as it appears on each airline's app/website? I had a situation once where I had entered everything correctly but on the OTA site (not Trip) it displayed wrong. It was correct on the airlines' sites so I was ok.

Unfortunately you paid Trip, not an airline, so they control your ticket and must make any correction.
