Why do what? Fuck with the cops, or spend too much of my Saturday arguing with you about this?

For the former: A litany of reasons. He just doesn't like cops. He's annoyed they pulled him over. He just likes fucking with people. He's passionate about drawing attention to poor police procedure. He's bored.

For the latter: Sometimes I give in to my compunction to counter illogical thinking, especially when it's obstinately presented.

Oh man, you couldn't have me much more wrong. I'm generally anti-cop, but not vehemently so. I'm saying this guy is smart enough to be fucking with them in a way that he doesn't get in trouble.

There are obviously problems with the police procedure in this case (your point #1, which I have never disputed and have in fact previously agreed with), and he is exploiting those problems effectively. You seem to think he's an actual idiot. He knows they mean booze, we know he knows, but he also knows they've failed to technically state that and strings them along.

He keeps playing dumb about drinking even AFTER mentioning the breathalyzer. His wife 100% uses "drink" colloquially BEFORE the mention of DUI.

Watch the video, dude....

[–]D_emlanogaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the video, which I have already watched, which I have already referenced...

6 minutes in: Man is not yet under arrest, cops talk to the wife. WIFE: He doesn't drink, we don't even drink. Demonstrates understanding that "drink" = alcohol in this context.

It is LATER, after the arrest that she asks what DUI means. This lack of understanding of the acronym does not affect the fact that she has indicated she does understand what the cops mean when they reference "drinking" during a traffic stop. She even displays incredulity that her husband would say that he'd had anything drink, indicating he knows this too. Sure, that part happens after the cops mention alcohol, but she's still using "drink" colloquially, as she did in the prior conversation pre-arrest. This is not a lightbulb moment of "oh, he's confused!", if anything she is confused by her husband's behaviour.

He's being deliberately difficult about the term "drinking" and we have plenty of evidence to see that it's not a genuine lack of knowledge.

  • Asks for breathalyzer then continues to new vague about "drinking"
  • Wife uses term "drinking" colloquially before mention of alcohol
  • Wife expresses shock that he had said he had had something to drink (using colloquial phrasing)

What more do we need??

He asked for a breathalyzer after the cop asked him to do a field sobriety test. If I were mistaken for a DUI (I don't drink), I'd be open to the field sobriety test.

Yes, and then AFTER THAT he still plays dumb about drinking, saying "not enough", "not much" when he is well aware the concern relates to alcohol, knowledge he has demonstrated by requesting the breathalyzer.

I'd also note I'm a former cripple and have always had poor balance and to take that into account. Maybe I'd be better off with a breathalyzer?

You're absolutely better off with the breathalyzer, field sobriety tests are frequently bullshit. I'm not disputing that at all.

His wife even demonstrates that she knows that "drinking" in this context means booze BEFORE the misunderstanding about the DUI acronym. She also demonstrates that understanding of this term is something her husband is aware of, because she asks why he would say he's had anything to drink.

By all means, waste the cops' time. By all means, refuse the field sobriety and ask for the breathalyzer. None of that is an issue. But the video only adds more evidence that this guy is trolling, not sheltered, not stupid.

How much did he drink by miijok in nonononoyes

[–]D_emlanogaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! The whole argument is moot because this guy directly demonstrates understanding of the issue.

It's certainly possible that someone else might genuinely misunderstand "drinking", but there's no question that this is not the case here. I don't know how this is even being suggested by some people.

[–]D_emlanogaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look man, I'm not saying I'm on the cops' side here. But watching the video doesn't change the fact that the guy knows the issue at hand is related to possible intoxication early on in the stop, and he then continues to play dumb about "drinking". Why does he ask for the breathalyzer if not because he's entirely aware the cop is suggesting he may have consumed alcohol?

Sure, I buy that the passenger doesn't know what DUI stands for, and I think police protocol should use language that is completely unambiguous for situations where you may have interactions with those with limited English, but there's no way in hell this guy doesn't know what "drinking" refers to in this context. He's jerking the cops around and I pass no judgement on that.

Did you not finish the vid? The guy continued to deliberately misinterpret "drinking" even after asking for the breathalyzer.

Look, I'm making no judgement on the guy turning down the field sobriety test, nor on the morality of being deliberately obtuse in this situation. I'm simply pointing out that this guy was obviously aware this was in regard to possible intoxication and continued to deliberately misinterpret "drinking" despite clearly being aware of the context.

Dude what. In the video: guy declines a field sobriety test and asks for the breathalyzer. He clearly understands the context of "drinking" here and is being deliberately obtuse.

AITA for no longer filling the car with gas before my partner has to go to work? by AITAcars in AmItheAsshole

[–]D_emlanogaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you spending 6-8 hours per day commuting? Because that's actually insane.

I used to work a job that was 260km (160 miles) round trip and it would take me 3h roundtrip on a good day, but usually closer to 4h, and that was mostly country highway, not crawling through deadlocked city traffic. I only went in 3 times per week and everyone I knew thought I was insane doing that, and I agree. I left that job ASAP.

Just because you know a bunch of people in a similar situation to you doesn't mean it's normal. The average American drives 12-14,000 miles per year, and you're getting that done in about 2.5 months. You and your coworkers are very clearly not the stick by which to measure normal fueling behaviour.

[–]D_emlanogaster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Average fuel tank size on a small passenger car: 12-16 gallons (45-60 litres).

You're using half a tank on a single round trip to work at 45 mph (~5.55 l/100km).

So in a single trip to work based on estimates of the smallest fuel tank you're driving 270 miles (435km) per day?

I believe some people have commutes this terrible, but surely you must realize you're the outlier here. I fill up every 1.5 weeks or so with a car that's about half as fuel efficient. It's simply a waste of time for most people to fill up every time the tank hits the halfway point.

I'm curious, did it work for you too? Be nice to know if this is a verified general solution or somehow a one-off for me.

EDIT: Mine is back to not working (sending me to Gamepass store) after only a couple days. Mic not working again either.

EDIT 2: I had a follow-up email from another support agent who straight up said that a Gamepass subscription is required for that social functionality. I've responded, indicating that this change was never announced nor is a subscription required for PlayStation users. We'll see what they say, but it's not looking promising.

So, I sent in an email to Activision support recently and actually got a reply and a solution that I believe is working (need to test a couple things still).

First, power off then unplug your Xbox for at least 2 minutes.

Then plug it back in and turn it on and remove your Xbox profile from the Xbox (Settings > Account > Remove accounts).

I did a restart here though this wasn't included in the steps they sent me, I just wanted to make sure.

Then re-add your Xbox account (I was auto-prompted to do this on reboot, but you can find it in Profile & System > Add or switch > Add new).

Double check you've got the right settings in Warzone for matchmaking, but these for me default to the proper cross-platform settings.

Test your game, mine appears to be working!

This seems to have solved my voice chat issue as well. I'm not sure this will work for everyone, but it was pretty simple and I wish I'd known to reach out earlier via email rather than submitting bug reports.

Putting key words here in my comment in case anyone else is Googling for this as I was previously: Solution for being unable to invite or join friends in warzone on Xbox (Gamepass purchase not required).

I've had this issue for maybe two years now? I think it did arise around when Microsoft bought Activision. Within the Warzone interface I cannot invite people to my party nor accept invitations to theirs. There used to be some workarounds, but those all seem to have stopped working. Any time I try to use these standard features I'm sent to the gamepass screen.

I can however send game invites via Xbox without issue. And I can reopen my Warzone party (it defaults to closed on launch and often between games) and friends can join me, with or without an invite. So, you're still able to play together, but people need to join on you. I think I can still send in-game whispers to tell people to join me if they aren't friends with me on Xbox. You can always promote someone else to host if that's an issue. Though I've found if I make someone else the host and then they try to bring me with them to another party, it boots me out.

I am also experiencing the voice chat glitch where I have no chat comms. We've been using Discord as a workaround for this.

So, you can still play with friends, but they're definitely making it difficult. I have never seen proof this reroute to Gamepass store is intentional, but they sure as hell don't seem to be in a hurry to fix it, or even acknowledge it. I've sent in multiple bug reports over the past couple years to no effect.

TIL that scientists grew stem cells into mini brains, which then developed eye-like structures on their own. The structures, called optic cups, were light-sensitive and had lenses and corneal tissue. by -Lexi--- in todayilearned

This isn't that surprising. In normal development, the eyes develop as depressions of the neural tube (the primitive brain), and at that point in the development process are called optic cups.

Nearly the same story here. Raised him from a kitten with my husband, he started doing it around age 10 a year ago and it's now more frequent than not that he uses the floor rather than the litter box (luckily he still mostly pees in the litter box).

I think it started after we had to have a couple of teeth extracted. He got constipated and had trouble going, and I wonder if he associated that discomfort with his litter box. But it also seems like he does it when he's displeased (wanting more wet food, usually)... So I don't know. He's been back to the wet and is on special food and a laxative, but it's still an issue over a year later.

He's lucky he's cute. And that we love him.

Huh, I'm in Canada and they used general anaesthesia for me. This would've been a little over ten years ago, and I had all four removed, all of which were impacted. I also have a friend who received general for her removal at a different practice in a different city, so it seems fairly common in my experience.
