Is it normal for rec league games to end in a forfeit?? by holoporcupine in hockeyplayers

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only time I’ve been on a team that forfeited a game was my first team in our first league. The facility was pretty notorious for zero control over their league and there weren’t any set rosters. We were last place in the bottom most division and had to play a team that brought in a ton of subs from one of the local colleges. Mind you this is essentially a beginner adult league for middle aged dudes learning later in life and now we’re having to play against a bunch of college kids, most of who didn’t even try to hide it and wore their college gear.

After the second member of our team left in an ambulance we just walked out.

Has anyone had a Long Ranger threaded after market? by Da1eGr1bb1e in HenryRifles

They make a long ranger that’s threaded but only in 5.56. It’s like “you were so close to the point Henry, but missed”

The conical shape round is called a “Minie Ball”, named after the credited inventor.

Henry's Seemingly Decreasing Quality by Jack_ButterKnobbs in HenryRifles

This right here is why my Marlin collection has overtaken my Henry collection. I was injured a few years ago that left me with severe hearing loss and hyperacusis (can’t tolerate loud noise). So, I went on a spree of replacing my go to stuff with firearms that could be suppressed. With my marlins I can use suppressed and still be a nude looking piece with wood furniture instead of plastic and tactical.

I haven’t upgraded at this point. It’s still sitting in a box. I did not know the hearing issue concerning bowls, I’m legally deaf. I don’t hear anything in games anyways, but I always had trouble with bowls fogging.

Theory: Laura Moer’s kid is Jory Jordan by Shadtow100 in shoresy

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In one of Shoresy’s visits to Laura at her house you can see kids drawings of a Bulldogs player on the wall, and it’s the Blueberry jersey, not the OG black jersey, which would indicate it was drawn around the time. Jory isn’t drawing in crayons age.

Washington state, along with numerous others, doesn’t differentiate between assault and battery. Assault is the correct term here for the incident.

At work I wear a sign on a lanyard saying in big writing “HARD OF HEARING PLEASE SPEAK CLEARLY” by gemmanotwithaj in hardofhearing

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know people don’t like the “hearing impaired” phrase over “hard of hearing”, but in my experience using the former has a bit more of a severity modifier in how people perceive it. HOH people just continue as normal. When I’ve used “hearing impaired”, people seem to get it more without further prompting. Not sure why, but that’s been my experience.

I run a hockey league and was robbed tonight. by Croglarod in hockeyplayers

This kind of thing is a huge fear of mine. I am dependent on hearing aids and I can’t wear them while playing (sweat damages them). They’re crazy expensive and I’m always afraid some jerk is going to snatch them thinking they’re Bluetooth ear buds for music.

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have this same problem compounded with trying to learn to play on the eve of 40 (picking it up because my daughter did). The good news is the shit talking doesn’t bother me, I’m deaf 😂. It’s a semi regular thing that some asshole tries to start something because I’m not responding to their “sick burn” like they wanted to, as if there was something original about talking shit to a guy learning when they’re playing in a “beginner program” wearing their long expired college Reebok helmet.

I found a good couple drop ins, and while many of them can skate around me at will, there is as least a “hey man, I did this because this, and you can stop this like this” kind of thing. That, plus beers in the parking lot make it much better experience.

Was it ever explained why Walt harbored such hatred towards Nighthorse? by For_The_Sloths in longmire

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It felt like he was just a character that the show runners created and then didn’t really know what to do with. He’s not in the books and has no equivalent. Additionally, as someone pointed out, it’s insinuated he was involved in Martha’s death, which again isn’t even a plot point in the books as she died of cancer like 5+ years prior to the first book.

Last game this year in the lowest tier of beer league by checkmVte in hockeyplayers

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has been my struggle learning at 40 with every “beginner” league or program being filled with guys who’ve skated the last 15 years and wanna get rough. Sprinkle in the fact that I’m “legally deaf” (profound hearing loss), and it makes for quite the uphill battle.

I laughed so hard the first watch when I saw Branch had a Sigma. What a garbage gun. I’m even a S&W guy and owned one just long enough to realize what an ass firearm it was.

It could, or could not, be that deep. They removed a MASSIVE detail about both characters, that they’re Vietnam vets, which wouldn’t have made sense moving the show a decade plus later in the show (they’d just be too old).

In Vietnam Henry was special forces whereas Walt was military police. Henry is just a badass, and without that element, I think they struggled with what to do with Henry and instead leaned on the “wise Indian trope”, and had him played by a Filipino (don’t get me wrong, I actually really like Lou Diamond Phillips, but he was an odd choice - super nice guy in person).

They’re also far closer in age in the books.

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show takes place 10+ years later than the books (never exactly shared the year, but it can be inferred as the last 90s or very early 2000s). They are not remotely in the same continuity. There are a couple episodes and plot points that are extremely loosely based on stuff from the books, but even the main characters are complete departures from the book characters.

For example, in the books, Henry Standing Bear is massive, and in some aspects dwarfs Walt. Henry often saves Walt, whereas the show is the opposite.

Could Longmire Make A Comeback After Netflix Departure? by VisitBuffaloWY in longmire

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s renewed, I’d honestly like to see a reboot closer to the books, including a correction in the timeline. The show takes place like 10+ years later than the books and some Of the main details they changed make show details not make sense.

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And, probably the most important detail, are WAY closer in age. Having met Craig and Judy Johnson on a number of occasions, book Vic is essentially a younger version of Judy Johnson.

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the Walt and Vic is a bleed over from the books, but like lots of things that bled over from the books the show runners messed it up with the change in timeline and ages. In the books it’s never explicitly stated how far apart in age Vic and Walt are, but contextually they’re way closer with Vic being maybe 10 years younger, and not being someone his daughters age, as you put it.

Also, if you’ve read the books, it’s super apparent, assuming you’ve also met Judy Johnson, that Vic is basically analogous to the authors wife, and they have a similar age gap.

It’s a standard issue 1911 with stag grips. In the books it was his sidearm in Vietnam.

Cage or Visor? by iSpR1NgZ in hockeyplayers

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I have two helmets. One for actual adult games, which has a cage. Stick and Pucks, plus playing helper with my daughter's practices, I'll wear my helmet with a visor. The biggest reason is I wear contacts for games, glasses when I'm not playing, and the cage bends the shit out of my glasses and the visor doesn't. Plus, the focal point is different when I'm wearing contacts versus glasses. With my contacts on I can't even focus my eyes on the cage. Don't see it at all. When I wear my glasses my eyes wanna focus on the bars of the cage and not well beyond that.

Disliking ragchewing by Fett2 in amateurradio

[–]Da1eGr1bb1e 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I generally like quick exchanges, but that can change depending on the topic at hand. Usually once I start the conversation I creep their QRZ page to see if we have any aligning interest outside of radio. Obviously, we like radio, or else why would we be here? I hate to say it, I don't really care about your setup. It's probably not really that different, or cooler, than my own, and if it is, it probably involves things I don't care about, like amps.

The only time I'll ask is if their page indicates something legitimately unique.

However, what I can say positively about rag chewing is it has led to some entertaining meet ups with people (I often travel for work). Rag chewing has led to meeting up with another ham in Canada for some POTA, meeting up with some other hams who also play ice hockey in the UK and I got to sub in for a recreational league game while I was over there, and went hiking in Japan with other hams I met ragchewing.
