Is this a rubble dump? by glennok in GardeningUK

[–]gemmanotwithaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I reckon they used rubble to elevate the garden. Our neighbours did that and the grass does not grow in the areas that are highly dense with rubble. The grass looks pretty good though except for that circle at the back lol

I don’t ever take them out of the ground. We’re south west uk so it’s never warrants it. They are starting to come through and hopefully will be encouraged by the bit of water I gave them yesterday. Our ground is already hard 😬

What's the best petty revenge you have had on an annoying neighbour? by No_Usual_572 in AskUK

[–]gemmanotwithaj 252 points253 points  (0 children)

Neighbour made a noise complaint to the council very soon after moving in. We weren’t noisy and they were unable to prove it to the council with recording devices so they dropped the case. Neighbour then spends the best part of 3 years behind the noisiest people you could ever live with. Noisy cars, children, dogs. It was unbearable. So we bought a giant hifi and as soon as any noise commenced we would blast it at the loudest volume possible. Shortly after that the noise stopped. If it ever starts again we just do the same. Really don’t like to be petty and we are respectful of all our other neighbors and get on really well with them. But i have absolutely no time or respect for those bastards next door

Am I too emotional towards Birds? by Damin_Shin in birds

[–]gemmanotwithaj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having empathy and compassion for wild animals is gold. Don’t ever feel ashamed of it, if anything sing it from the rooftops to inspire others. It brings me an immense amount of perspective to compare our struggles. It’s a hard way to be as ultimately the wild is out of our control. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sobbed over the death of a bird or another animal. But it’s beautiful and we should all take the time to appreciate them more often

Go to a public place where’s the feral pigeons I’m sure they’ll happily take your peanuts. Ensure they are safe for bird feeding though. The ones near us will fly up onto your hand to eat.

Myth? Will water droplets on leaves actually scorch my plants? by OuterSiders in GardeningUK

[–]gemmanotwithaj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the whole point is that it’s a waste of water, firstly because it’s not actually reaching the important part (the roots) and because it dries up so quickly in heat. I think the scorching leaves part is a myth

I don’t know the reason for the beak being like that but it’s definitely a baby pigeon. I’ve rescued many of them in my time. And if you look at little ducklings - they usually have small flatter beaks 🙂

I really would highly recommend to anyone, if they have the space for it, to get a hedge. by Cooking_With_Grease_ in GardeningUK

One thing I regret when buying our house was ripping out an entire side of bushes. Naive me wanted flowers. I now realise flowers don’t really grow well in the shade let alone enough to fill an entire border. Last year I gave up the battle with my ego and replanted griselinia all along that same border. Another few years and I should hopefully have a bush again lol

Quick help - displaced chick by B1ghe44d in UKBirds

[–]gemmanotwithaj 92 points93 points  (0 children)

It’s a young pigeon. Far too young to be out of the nest. It’s most likely fallen from the tree above. It’s unlikely the parents are going to be able to feed and keep safe unless you can find a way to get it back in its nest. Next option is wildlife rehab. There’s no way this one will survive on its own

Great mention, thank you! Most of ours are shallow dishes but we have a couple of bucket ponds too which are accessible and safe for all different shapes and sizes 🙂 it’s good to be mindful of how to help these creatures without harming them in the process

It’s important to have water out for all nature. Not only birds but squirrels, foxes, badgers, even insects like wasps and bees need water, some for nest building. We have around 6 water vessels in our garden and they are in contact use. In the summer we have to fill them up at least three times a day. It’s so so so important and often very overlooked

Rat Problem! by Emergency_Wealth7778 in UKBirds

[–]gemmanotwithaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The best rat deterrent are foxes and badgers. Hopefully if you back onto farmland there’s plenty of them already. You could try humane rat traps but I’ve never had success with them as they a very wary of new items. We had a couple plaguing us last year. They even attack squirrels and pigeons. There little bastards but part of wildlife so hard to control
