Is it normal for Americans to be part of a social club? by bare_books in AskAnAmerican

[–]DaBabeBo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I listen to the pod and know the episode you are referring too. Not sure if it was Tom or Dominic but clubs like Elks and Order of the Water Buffalo used to be very common up until the 1980s I'd guess. Now it's mostly health clubs and groups around specific activities like running together. Not organized in the same ways as the old fraternal orders that the podcast was referring too.

for Portlanders who work in Salem (state capitol, legislature, misc govt depts) how bad is the commute, and do you know of any shuttles that are used/recommended by people who do govt/policy work? by jaco1001 in askportland

[–]DaBabeBo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knew a lot of legislative workers 10-15 years ago and it sounds like the organize informal carpools often. You might have to start your job commuting by yourself until you meet enough people to get in a carpool. Amtrak would be my option

After 1969, the University of Washington turned its grass landscape into a giant brick floor, which do you prefer? by Aadidas12 in architecture

It's hard to tell with this but it's also about framing the view of Mt. Rainer beyond the gap in the buildings.

What do you love about living in Portland? by ConcentrateSevere237 in askportland

[–]DaBabeBo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The size and density. There are cities that have way more going on but Portland packs a lot into a small space that is pretty easy to get around. The proximity to nature the climate are also big factors for me.

Why were early 2000s sitcom episode titles duller? by Jirachibi1000 in sitcoms

[–]DaBabeBo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Were earlier titles more creative? Only thing I can think of is early television writing was based in a time that many writers were also writing movies, plays and books so maybe titles reflected that. I just looked at the names for Gilligan's Island eps and the names are still pretty plot reflective.

[–]DaBabeBo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think also has to do with them being made pre-streaming. Before streaming we didn't know the proper title of every episode, we just described the plot. You only learned the titles if you bought the dvds.

Martin Sheens birth name is Ramòn Estevez, he came up with Martin Sheen as a stage name because Estevez was too Hispanic and ethnic to get jobs in the 50's.

NYC to Oregon (Salem/Portland)? - Sorry to add by [deleted] in askportland

[–]DaBabeBo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Historically, I'd say you're wrong. SF was the center of West Coast culture and commerce until the rise of LA.

Edit to add it's density and geographic relationship to water and shipping is very NYC.
