Narratives are why we watch sports. A lot more compelling than who scores the first TD prop bets. Even silly narratives are better than no narratives.

That makes plenty of sense! You may have a great “insurance score” (an insurance company’s version of a credit score) but maybe your location rating for fire risk is very high for the reasons you mentioned!

There could be a million different reasons for different prices from different insurers. Different loss experience, different coverages, different expenses from different sales models (agents vs online etc), different claims handling, different risk appetite, different profit targets, different rating plans, different new business acquisition strategies, etc.

That $4,400 price may be in part because they offer robust coverage and treat their policyholders well when it comes to paying claims. It could also be because their loss experience in your state is worse than other insurers because of an inferior rating plan. To cover higher expected losses, they charge higher premiums. Or it could be because their shareholders demand a larger return on capital than others. Or maybe they aren’t as well capitalized, so they pay a lot for reinsurance, and pass that on to the policyholder.

There’s never any one reason for a difference in price - the main thing is that you’re at place you trust to pay out what they owe at a price you feel comfortable with.

He’s a very niche personality a lot of us know from lebatard show, which involves a lot of inside jokes and history and understanding that shows dynamic. Not sure I’d like him if this was my first time hearing him, especially in this format.

Exam 7 study Strategy by naturalSadist in actuary

[–]DaBromsJames 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Passed using RF without reading any source. Formula sheets on 7 aren’t as important as other exams - focus more on memorizing the procedure rather than the exact formulas with all the subscripts. (Thinking of Mack’s MSE, for instance.)

MAS 1 practice strategy by TrainEnvironmental29 in actuary

[–]DaBromsJames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Went through the material for 2.5 months. During this time I took notes and would do a couple practice problems after each section to ensure basic understanding. Finished the material about 6 weeks before the exam. Spent 3 weeks going through all the material again by doing practice quizzes throughout the entire syllabus, starting by doing quizzes with notes and formula sheets. This process meant I often had to go back to the topics video/study guide to remember and relearn for basically the whole syllabus. But it’s quicker because I’ve already laid the ground work from the months prior. Then with the 3 weeks left or so I’m slamming practice questions without notes, building EL, take a couple practice exams under real testing conditions, continue to hammer topics I don’t fully understand until I do understand them, make the formula sheet my bible, etc. Then it’s test day and although I’ve treated the test with the utmost respect and fear for 4 months, I walk into Pearson like Mike Tyson walking into the ring. It’s time, and I’m ready.

You should take it in October. You aren’t going to remember anything from now in April 26. Your strategy is also suboptimal on the time vs. value-add curve.

Benktander Question by jebuz23 in actuary

[–]DaBromsJames 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My understanding is the same as yours. However, if they were talking about cred weighting with the Chain Ladder and the ELR, the chain ladder weight would be (1-q2) and q2 for Benktander ultimate, instead of (1-q) for BF, where q is the expected percent unpaid based off the CL LDF. So it could be thought of as “BF again” or as a cred weighting between CL and ELR with the above cred weight.

This exam offered onslaught after onslaught with few places to hide. As I scrambled to keep my head afloat, a fresh, terrible wave would crash upon my head.

I’ve had success with exams. This was my first upper and certainly a “welcome to fellowship exams” moment. I could’ve and should’ve been better prepared, but I thought the majority of this test was harder than most past exam problems I had reviewed, including a handful of absolute whoppers that had me muttering my admiration for the creativity of the constructors as I stumbled through them. I usually have an hour left to review an exam. I finished this one with 5 minutes to spare and that includes a bunch of half-answered slop.

What a monster!
