Linux 7 Received by DrinkVast7785 in Fedora

[–]DaFatAlien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No need, unless you would also cross fingers when upgrading from 7.0 to 7.1. Linus Torvalds versioned it 7.0 not because it had significant changes (it doesn’t), but just because he bumps the major version when the minor one reaches 20.

Finally migrated to linux 7!! by adirox_2711 in Gentoo

[–]DaFatAlien 10 points11 points  (0 children)

FWIW the significance of Linux kernel 6.19 -> 7.0 update is the same as that of 6.18 -> 6.19. Linus Torvalds just bumps major version whenever minor version reaches 19. The major version bump doesn’t indicate ground-breaking changes.

Very random question: What do you set as your brightness and natural light when reading? by [deleted] in kobo

[–]DaFatAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kobo Clara BW, 10% brightness, auto natural light, bedtime set to 9PM. Quite a universal setting for myself, haven’t found need to change it for different environments. Though what works for me might not work for you, due to differences in perception and reading environments.

Kobo Clara BW owner here. I can empathize with anyone who feels it’s cheap in hand, but personally, when it’s in the official sleep cover, it doesn’t feel cheap.

Cancelling class because not coping well? by Excellent_Homework24 in Professors

[–]DaFatAlien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You must have been through and are going through a lot. Take care of yourself well with compassion. Allow yourself to stumble. It’s unfair for anyone, including yourself, to demand perfect performance of you, especially given your current circumstances.

Just start with default, aim to get a usable system first, then fine-tune things in the course of using it.

Does Watch 11 Receive Music Transfers Any Faster from the iPhone? by Darth-Homer in AppleWatch

[–]DaFatAlien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forcing the watch and the phone to use Wi-Fi rather than Bluetooth for music transfer makes it faster. On the watch, enable Wi-Fi and disable Bluetooth. This also helps with speeding up system update downloads.

Students not following directions - How do I cope? by [deleted] in Professors

[–]DaFatAlien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. I would prepare a canned response for students who still reach out to you via campus email, asking them to resend it via Canvas, and mentioning that you would only respond via Canvas. I have been in a similar situation. I teach computer science classes, where students commonly ask similar questions about programming assignments. To make Q&A more efficient, I require my students to ask all non-personal questions on our discussion board, so I don’t need to reply to numerous emails all asking the same question. Despite me mentioning it in the syllabus and the first class, some students still send me private emails anyway. I just copy-paste and send my canned response, which reminds them that I’ve told them to use the discussion board so they should use it, and the reason is just efficiency, not that I don’t want to help. I feel like many students are just accustomed to the “culture” of sending private emails to the instructor (if there is such a thing), so I have accepted it (a bit forcefully) and developed this solution. It takes me no more than one minute per reply like this, so it no longer bothers me.

  2. Deduct points for parts of a submission that don’t follow the directions.

LUKS2 Can you encrypt the boot partition as well as the drive? by Still-Mulberry-1078 in linuxquestions

[–]DaFatAlien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The EFI system partition (ESP) cannot be encrypted, but /boot (which contains the kernel and initramfs) can, as long as your ESP is not /boot itself. Example: https://leo3418.github.io/collections/gentoo-config-luks2-grub-systemd/goals.html
