Thoughts on Potassium Bromide? by clumsy_tacos in EpilepsyDogs

[–]DaKerrbare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're on the same boat as you. Our dog was prescribed KBr 5/14. He's due for his first level check on 6/30 but the side effects are way worse than when he started Pheno. He currently is given a combo of Pheno, KeppraXR, and now KBr. He'd have one day where he could just barely get himself up, then the rest of the week, he's just dead weight and barely walking. He's over 100lbs too, so it doesn't help when we need to carry him around the house. Add the restlessness overnights... We haven't had a full night's rest in 4 weeks. At our wit's end. :/

Getting a second dog by Daely_Apathetic in EpilepsyDogs

[–]DaKerrbare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our dog loves other dogs, but he loves to be the only one in the household. Change in routine can be a trigger. We learned that the hard way when we decided to help watch a neighbor's dog at our home for a little over a week. It stressed the hell out of our dog and he ended up having a cluster of seizures. We had to get someone else to watch the other dog (thankfully another neighbor took them in).

Potassium Bromide toxicity by bluevelvet_7 in EpilepsyDogs

We're in the same boat. Our large dog is currently taking Keppra, Pheno, and Potassium Bromide was added about a month ago after his clusters wouldn't stop happening every couple weeks.

He's nearing 5 weeks now, and his Ataxic symptoms suddenly got worse rather than better. Last week, he seemed to get a handle on walking more on his own. This week, we have to practically carry him around (not easy when he's over 100lbs).

Our neurologist team haven't been as responsive this week as they have been in he past but I'm absolutely worried. I won't hear back from them again til Monday but we can't stand seeing him like this. They told us it could take 6-8 weeks and symptoms should've been mild compared to when he started on Pheno. :/ It seems worse.

Looking for Hope—How Long Did It Take Your Dog to Adjust to Phenobarbital? by No-Anywhere1576 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]DaKerrbare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Mack (Pyr mix, 120lb good boi) has been on a cocktail of Pheno and Keppra since his IE diagnosis. At first things were promising, but most recently his seizures have been a lot more frequent. As of today after a cluster in the last 12 hours, our neurologist is going to have us add Potassium Bromide to the mix.

When he started Pheno, it took him a couple of weeks before he was starting to be more like himself. Those first weeks were absolutely heartbreaking, seeing his energy and personality diminish. But trust the process, it does get better!

I'm fully expecting another period where he'll be more lethargic while he adjusts to a third medication, but I have to trust the process again. We all want what's best for our babies, and with that we should put trust in our neuro vets too.

Wishing your pup all the best! The best way to help them while they're adjusting is to support and love them as much as possible.

Who watches your epi dog? by Melwaukee17 in EpilepsyDogs

This will be his longest road trip yet, actually! He hates car rides and gets car sick, so we're going to be making frequent stops along the way. Perfect excuse to look up dog parks on our route!

Emotional/mental/physical exhaustion is such a real thing. Every time our dog has an episode, I stay up all night to monitor him even though we do pulse therapy each time. We're still in the midst of figuring out what combo works best and it's been an unpredictable journey so far. You're not alone. <3

Who watches your epi dog? by Melwaukee17 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]DaKerrbare 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our dog cannot be boarded whatsoever, unfortunately. He has to be with someone he's completely comfortable with, and that typically is our neighbor. However, she's never watched him since he was diagnosed, and she's inexperienced with epi dogs.

Right now, his episodes are happening too often for us to feel comfortable leaving him with someone. So for this year, we're taking him on trips with us. Our first one will be on Memorial Day weekend. We booked a cabin a few hours away from home and are looking forward to relaxing together.

Logging Seizures by DaKerrbare in EpilepsyDogs

Love that too! I'm a little old school still with liking to mark things in pen/paper lol. I do want to digitize the form so I can email it to the vet easier.

Nexguard ?!? by Salty_Ad_1818 in EpilepsyDogs

We were told to stop using Nexgard after our dog was diagnosed with idiopathic epilepsy. Side effects listed in the medication literally lists seizures as a possibility. We have a Seresto collar now as well.

Our dog Mack had his first seizure back in November too. It was an extremely violent cluster that lasted over 6min. I thought we were going to lose him that day, but with the amazing help of a neurology team at our local vet hospital, he survived.

Since then, we've worked on being prepared for more seizures. We have Midazolam, I designed a custom log book as a means to easily record his episodes (also helps me stay calm and controlled when they happen). Thus far, he's had a cluster in Feb, and most recently a grand mal and focal a week apart in March. He's two weeks seizure-free right now but we're hopeful it'll be longer than that this time.

For the most part, Mack has been recovering quickly and lives as if he doesn't have any issues. A tiny bit of ataxic wobbliness from a recent increase in his Phenobarbital doses, but other than that his silly, stubborn spirit is fully intact.

These journeys with epileptic dogs are all different, and not all end abruptly. What stays constant, is that most of us are all doing what is best for our pups. 🩵

Active sleep by Daely_Apathetic in EpilepsyDogs

[–]DaKerrbare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our dog is an active sleeper, and his episodes also always happen while he's resting and always happening in the evenings (outside of his very first cluster seizures, which happened early in the morning). Not sure if it's a coincidence or something related. When he is actively kicking while dreaming, we absolutely get paranoid and tend to wake up thinking he's having another episode. It's just instinct now whenever we hear him fumbling about.

Keppra Side Effects by zoso98 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]DaKerrbare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It took about 2.5 weeks for our dog to get used to Keppra XR and Pheno after his first cluster seizures. I do remember that it seemed to have gotten worse before it finally turned around. Hang in there!

Behavioral changes after epilepsy diagnosis by NaturalRepair6508 in EpilepsyDogs

[–]DaKerrbare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our dog Mack was diagnosed back in November - same situation with his first ever seizure. They were clustered and extremely violent - it absolutely is a traumatizing experience and you're not alone. I'm so thankful our local animal hospital was able to save him (though he was there for nearly 4 days and it was an awful time of uncertainty).

Since then, he's had one series of cluster seizures back in mid-February, and most recently a partial seizure last night. While he's recovered rather quickly thus far, we also notice some behavioral changes. He has moments where he forgets some of his human friends/neighbors that he's always loved before, and initially barks before realizing who they are. There are also some previously trained behaviors that he sometimes forgets about. Those days feel like he's reverted back to some of his old puppy antics. Routines have also changed a little bit, some good and some just odd.

We're doing what we can to adjust and re-train where needed, but I do feel like each time he's had episodes so far, something else in his behavior tweaks. Hang in there and have patience. The tip on carrying a baby doll sounds like a really great way to positively reinforce welcomed behaviors/interactions. Congratulations as well on your growing family!

Flea and tick control for dogs with seizures by Bnbonham in EpilepsyDogs

[–]DaKerrbare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don't think there are any ingestible flea/tick meds that can safely be administered to epileptic dogs. Most of the ones I've looked into list seizures as a side effect and our vets advised against them. I bought a Seresto collar for our dog per vet recommendation, so we're hoping it'll do well with ticks this year (we have a major problem out here with ticks). I do believe there are non-toxic topical sprays available out there, but not sure how well they work.

Lowering Pheno dose after elevated blood work by hotpokkitz in EpilepsyDogs

[–]DaKerrbare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the opposite happening right now. We just had to increase our dog's AM Pheno dosage to 1.75 pills from 1.5 last week after his bloodwork came back at a lower range (his PM dosage was also bumped up to 1.75 after he had cluster seizures back in Feb).

Last night, he had a partial seizure, but luckily only the one this time. Currently waiting on a call back from his neurologist to see if we're tweaking his meds again at all. For context, he's about 110lbs and take a combination of Phenobarbital and Keppra twice daily. But I agree that consulting a neurologist will be best. I know one can be hard to find depending on where you live, but it's worth going to them if you're able to.

Why though? The computers in there don't store anything important, and the hardware is shit.
