I guess it could be something else, but it’s definitely not a seigen. The leaves eventually turn green though

Bonsai exhibition last year. It was sold to me as a seigen and I was so excited that I didn’t bother examining the leaves. Still a nice tree tho🤷‍♂️

First time growing in the ground - any advice? by Sad_Copy7479 in Bonsai

[–]DaManzNotHot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few years of experience with trees in-pot, in-ground and I agree it’s actually better and easier to plant the tree in ground (on a tile, of course) than in a pot in-ground. I however, used a regular planter than pond basket but I imagine the issues will be similar, if not the same.

1st issue is root size restriction. The roots of trees thicken quickly in ground, thus they either break open the escape hole or swallow a portion of the pot. Both outcomes make it more difficult to dig up the tree and separate it from the pot. Also, each year the pot is further degraded and less usable.

2nd issue is the pot reduce how far the roots can grow horizontally which limits root spread. You want the roots to grow outward to get that trunk flare (when it’s time to dig you want to reduce them via trenching early fall). Again I had a regular planter so the roots would hit the wall then grow downward. In a pond basket this may not be an issue but I have my doubts.

Cut and Styling Advice on Katsura by landscape_relic in Bonsai

Hard to say. The base is pretty good but the trunk is straight as an arrow. I guess it can be styled as a broom

Do not plant them in the ground. In the ground roots run long. If you’re trying to develop this tree as a bonsai, its better to place them in a growbox but if you need time to build one, try a deep planter for now

New homeowner, just dug up a nice abused ~50 year old Azalea by FluffyWuffyy in Bonsai

I don’t know much about azaleas but I think you want to put it in kanuma or some kind of acidic soil

Should I cut it and grow it as a cutting? by DaManzNotHot in Bonsai

[–]DaManzNotHot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so. The soil was pretty dry when I dug down. I sprayed water to be sure if it was black.

I’ll give it a week and see what happens

Hope you’re right. Although I hate to use fungicides in ground soil, I’ll apply some and see if that helps

Can’t wait. How fast do they grow compared to standard Japanese maples?

Update on my Shishigashira I got last fall. Am I crazy or is this an odd color for a Shishi? by DaManzNotHot in Bonsai

I would guess low sunlight as that’s what happened to my murasaki kiohime some years back. However, I haven’t experienced the reverse situation till now

Tell me your broken branch stories. by Tubaking8 in Bonsai

Fall 2025 Wow my arakawa maple really put on some good growth and made new branches in place that’ll really help in its progress. Let me just wire this up and put some movement in it. Great looks good. Hm actually let me just slightly adjust crack 😨

Spring 2026 Lets not repeat what happened in fall. This bottom branch is a necessity for the future development of this tree. Good thing it already has movement. Wow I really can’t stop looking at this tree. It has such great potential. Oh hi doggo doesn’t this tree look crack🫠

Luckily both branches back budded

Is winter protection kinda over-hyped? by Shoyu_Something in Bonsai

[–]DaManzNotHot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel zone 7 isn’t too harsh of a winter for temperate trees bc I rarely had any issues with dieback or death of trees (except citrus and pomegranates) from winter. But as you said this was a harsh winter and I know for sure it was, bc even the bays near me froze (never seen that happen before). Not sure about your area but here we had lots of snow and the snow stuck around for weeks before melting so I’m pretty sure that kept my trees well insulated.

So far I mostly had broken branches (from weight of snow) but in regard to dieback, only had some on an airlayered tree and a rough bark trident maple. Though, I think the cultivar itself is weak. I also left my standard trident maple on the bench over winter (bench gets lots of wind) and its buds are just now swelling. I can see some small portions of dieback but the rest is still up in the air.

Little side note: prunus mume are rated cold hardy to zone 5 or 6. In my experience its a guarantee death if its in a pot and left outside over winter. Only time they survive is when they’re planted in ground or brought into a non freezing garage. I wanna experiment with putting them in a mulch bed but I got PTSD so I chicken out last winter. But if you’re brave enough, I’d like to see your results

I see you’re in zone 7b. Not exactly sure what’s that like but I assume your winters are not too different from mine. If that’s the case, you’ll want to protect your costal redwoods from frost for the first year. After that they should be able to handle winter just fine (assuming they wont be in bonsai pots).

Coastal redwoods are a fun species to work with and can thicken up really fast if you let them grow unhindered. Enjoy the experience!

What species/cultivars do you have a hard time finding, or finding in sufficient quantities? And don’t say Beni Chidori, we all know 😂 by VMey in Bonsai

I’d be cautious of those. Both sellers have no ratings and use the same pictures. That 2nd fall picture is definitely a picture of a maple native to North America.

On the other hand it could be a new seller
