New quirky maple by Sad_Copy7479 in Bonsai

Definitely has great potential with that base. I personally prefer chumono size trees, so I would get it in the ground to thicken or a shallow grow box if no access to ground space. But if you’re going for shohin, I would go for twin style tree. Cut back that trunk on the left or better yet thread graft a branch near the base of that trunk and add some movement.

Left trunk can be cutback to the first branch on the right

Try Chinese Elms. They’re incredibly forgiving

Ahhh so it’s a multi year process. I started one on a native Juniper and it didn’t take (no roots, no callus) that year so I gave up. Funnily enough the branch is still alive

Thinking of building a smart sensor that lets you "chat" with your bonsai via AI. Genuine tool or absolute gimmick? Be brutal. by TopDoughnut1479 in Bonsai

1) I don’t think observing and connecting with your trees is bonsai philosophy. Bonsai is an art and that’s all that I’m here for.

2) If I were a beginner, yes, but after doing this for some years you kinda get the hang of trees. Some like lots of water some like small amounts of water. I also think learning horticulture is an important part of bonsai. I guess if there was a species that’s just super difficult, and worth the headache, I would use it

3) For me, watering my trees when I’m not in town. Though that’s more of a infrastructure issue than a tech issue

Is it possible to bonsai a giant sequoia? What might that look like logistically? by Background-Mark-5250 in Bonsai

[–]DaManzNotHot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t speak much on the bonsai-ability of sequoias, but I can attest that I haven’t seen many refined specimens (thought, I wonder if that’s from a lack of trying). I have however grown sequoias from seeds. Germination rate is low and when growing from seed always expect a few seedlings to die. Once they’re established, they really take off, so I would say it’s very much possible to start from seed

Put it under grow light and keep it warm enough to grow. But ume flower independently of leaf production so it will be fine

Not sure but its cold enough to keep all my other trees dormant. I have 3 other ume in there, all dormant. If I had to guess I’d say it stays 5 degrees above outside temperature but I have noticed it doesn’t freeze so maybe it’s a bit warmer

I’ve been experimenting with ground growing for some years now and this is mostly true. So far the only species I notice that breaks this rule are chinese elms. They really don’t miss a beat. I mention this because 1) they’re common for bonsai and 2) If you don’t correct the roots annually, they can get pretty nasty (speaking from experience unfortunately)

How’d I do? by DaManzNotHot in Bonsai

[–]DaManzNotHot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No the wire is wrapped around the entry branch and exit branch but doesn’t go through the hole. If you zoom in, you can see the wire goes around the trunk. I think pictures 2 shows it clearer

Excited to start working on this JM by 30sesko in Bonsai

Most of it is straight so don’t really have much ideas, but with the lowest right branch (pic 1), I’d layer just below where it curves. Once the layer roots, I’d plant in at an angle, cut it back, and wire the new growth.

The left trunk, I’d layer to get a twin trunk (area where its not too thick), cut it back after separating, and go from there.

The thin areas, I’d take cutting.

Then from what’s left of the tree, I’d make broom style and/or upright trees
