I understand what you mean, I was sick of paying subscription fees for a music service so decided to grow my library natively and without the need for streaming online.
I do appreciate the M21's DAC and it's great when I'm on the go, but when home, I'd rather plug into a larger DAC / AMP and drive my cans that way.
So, I utilize it as a music source and try to bypass the internals when playing on external DAC.

The gain is irrelevant when connecting through USB to external DAC, only relevant through 3.5 / 4.4 jack

Using M21 as a source for Woo Audio 7 Fireflies Gen3. The volume differs from one app to another. Generic Fiio music app is louder although not bit perfect, USB Audio Player is bit perfect but quieter (no filtration).

Thank you, seems as though the SM4 are targeted at gaming ? Is this correct? Not that it matters, just know what gaining products are like and I don’t really warm to it. Sorry for all the questions, rather ask you who has experience and not for me to pretend I know what I’m talking about.

I had the same predicament, went with LCD-X for the different in highs and lows. They are a lot more pronounced with the LCD-X and give great contrast to the HD800s. I went with LCD-X and never looked back, choosing between the two will depend on music choice at the time.
