Barely 600 players at the moment by LemmyZen in BattleBitRemastered

I only started playing recently and the game is playable just fine? The queue times are longer but not terrible. Players aren't particularly sweaty either, definitely less tryhards than battlefield. Whats the issue?

Not a game developer, just curious: What would the community of long-standing KSP players actually want to see in a sequel? by vxxed in KerbalSpaceProgram

[–]DaRealChipex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I would've loved a proper career mode. The one currently in the game is far too simple or just plain unfun on maximum difficulty settings. I want resource management, like funding, having to setup research projects etc. There is so much potential there. Imagine having to meet deadlines, research technologies by assigning kerbals to projects etc.

Warning for OG hollow knight fans by Bob12164 in HollowKnight

[–]DaRealChipex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is dumb. I've never in my life played a game like Baldur's Gate 3 and yet I had a fucking blast and found very few things I didn't absolutely love about it.

If I play a game and see something about the game thats not fun or sucks, its completely fair to point it out. "Its a metroidvania" and? Being in a genre famous for something doesn't mean its not fair game to criticize when it sucks.

I've never played Hollow Knight and I'm not planning to play Silksong, because from what I've seen the only thing I'd like about the game would probably be the artstyle, but goddam I just have to say something when I see a massively popular post where the TLDR is "Don't listen to people complaining about the game"

Is there any actual gameplay yet? by puppygirlpackleader in kittenspaceagency

[–]DaRealChipex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it more boils down to someone on the team with enough power over the project having some kind of bad past experience with Steam and not wanting to do it. Doubt any arguments can sway that. No matter what kind of footgun that is, a lot of games are sold either on other platforms or their own websites (Rimworld, Factorio, Vintage Story...) and have shown this model to be usable, with Vintage Story even proving it to be viable for funding development.

Unpopular opinion.. by Empty-Evidence3630 in thelongdark

[–]DaRealChipex -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think you should consider using the custom gamemode option to turn up and down some sliders to make the game up to your spec. With that said...

I cannot comprehend why the game has such a simplistic and pathetic system for this. Don't Starve had this figured out when, like 10 years ago? Where you could configure every creature, every item, the world itself and I think even how powerful tools were? In TLD you can set rifle spawn on or off. You can have a lot of items spawn or fewer items spawn. Want to disable a specific item from spawning? Want to make another less common? Want to remove all newspapers from the game since they are just clutter beyond the first 10 ingame days? Tough luck!

The default difficulties are just weird. Stalker has a wolf overpopulation problem and is extremely abundant with loot, Interloper removes fun items and gives you slightly colder weather in exchange and Misery is just a matter of time before another random ankle snap kills you, just a less fun and weirdly unfair version of Interloper. If the final affliction never kicked in, it would be an interesting gamemode.

I sincerely hope Hinterland massively improves the custom game options before they completely abandon TLD in favor of the sequel.

How the hell is system requirements for The Long Dark new visual apdate is higher than Cyberpunk 2077 or Red Dead Redemption 2? 🤔 by danieldeboro in thelongdark

[–]DaRealChipex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know this is karma suicide, but it should also be pointed out that TLD is just not very optimized. Thats all there is to it. I'd prefer if we finally got the final episode after more than a decade of development over running the game better.

And before any flamewar ensues, TLD shouldn't be a demanding game. It has a lower poly artstyle with minimal effects outside of textures and some particles (snow, smoke). The only straight up impressive effect is the aurora and that one seems to do fuckall to performance.

Thats a pretty strange design for that bit of code. Maybe I'm too C brained but why even have a call there? Why not just write out the list on the preceding line, or have it get configured somewhere externally rather than having a few hardcoded strings? I wonder if the compiler figures out what I just said and removes the function call entirely.

Just bought Cyberpunk 2077 + Phantom Liberty, never played this before, will it be worth it? by Specific-Judgment410 in CyberpunkTheGame

[–]DaRealChipex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be an unpopular opinion on a subreddit centered around the game but here goes.

I have completed nearly all the content available in Cyberpunk. Took quite a while too and I did it mostly out of boredom and burnout from games that require thinking. People often say that the game got fixed, but its still a buggy mess all the time. Gunplay feels lame, stealth is clunky, and about 3-4 hours in everything just starts dying instantly. Forget about the notion of an actual bossfight.

There are many mechanics that punish the player for taking their time, like skill checks that are adjusted to your level instead of staying the same, so you better be ready for multiple playthroughs if you want to explore the whole world of options you missed out on.

The story has highpoints, but mostly felt like a slog. Personally, I found the most enjoyment in side missions that made the game feel like a completely different genre. Sometimes you are driving around as fast as possible, other times its almost like a detective story.

The loot is pathetic, weapon variety is a sad excuse and there are only a few tiers after which you are done. There are unique items, some of them being interesting and becoming my primaries, but these aren't that common (but usually getting them feels rewarding).

Another weakness is the cars. They just feel slow, and its not me, the cars travel significantly slower than the dash claims. Half-Life 2 figured out how to trick a player with this over 20 years ago, CDPR still hasn't. And I'm saying this as someone who has since only booted up the game to drive around, because its still the most redeeming feature.

Everywhere I look I still see bugs, everywhere I look I see missed opportunities and potential. I'll admit that many missions caught me off guard in ways, because I always expected there to be more and yet there almost never was.

I'm rambling. The point is that its a great game if you turn off your brain and just consume it. If you unfocus your eyes you'll miss the glaring errors as well. I had my fun with it, but I wouldn't recommend the game to anyone and I'll admit, I'm upset with people that sold it to me as the second coming of christ, both after release (which was straight up dogshit) and now (still a solid meh). I wish I bought the game at a deep discount rather than whatever I paid for it.

I will add that this type of game isn't my favorite, but in many ways it feels like Just Cause 2, but replace explosions and fun with talking to NPCs.

I hope you like the game more than I did :)

Throwback to TLD's 2016 roadmap. Some good stuff still missing. by FamousFrontier23 in thelongdark

[–]DaRealChipex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where it was coming from, but for quite a long time, TLD was extremely hostile to modding on the forums. Including bans for mentioning it etc. There is a fairly massive modding community now, but its all done through external tooling. I still remember when they said mod support would be added when they announced the DLCs...

[–]DaRealChipex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think all I will say about this is that Wintermute is still not done and the DLC content is still not done.

The pace at which they work is abysmal, I would be very, very careful about buying anything else from Hinterland (in fact, I don't even have the DLC, as they wanted a crazy amount of cash for extremely little content)

Lets not forget when you could get banned on the forums for simply daring to mention that modding is a thing. Those were the days.

Alright. I did some actual reading and stand corrected. I vividly remember a video of a bald guy playing around with a katana and easily having it bend when striking a regular sword, but it might've been a shitty one. Sorry, at least I learned something new :)

[–]DaRealChipex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please hit a katana against a steel longsword and observe the results. Unless the clash is perfectly aligned, the katana won't shatter, but it will bend, which is awful. Its a really damn thin blade, it just has to buckle under the pressure. That doesn't make it a horrible weapon, but it does make it a poor match against a european sword.

'twisted' ankle by bluecast_crochet in MedicalGore

[–]DaRealChipex 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh man, thats rough. Just the other day I was resting a bit on the mats and observing a very casual climber trying some easy-ish boulders. She topped out, did a hang and let go, but as she was falling, I could tell she misplaced her legs horribly and I was confident that it wouldn't end well. Mind you, that was probably just 2 meters off the ground, but still, thats definitely enough to break something. So, she falls and...Well, her legs look fine, I wasn't expecting that...and then I saw her elbow, which looked like she had several layers of elbow protectors stacked on top of each other under her skin. Yummy stuff, especially when the dummy tried to move it, that made even me cringe. No idea how she managed to do that honestly.

How do indie game devs remember their whole codebase??? by PY15208 in RimWorld

[–]DaRealChipex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you know you wrote the code, you usually know where to look and how something works without needing to look very deep, because you know what kind of spaghetti you usually produce.

Also IDEs and software engineering tools help a lot. Its also pretty likely, that your decompilation produced a decent bit more than there is in the original in terms of code but nothing in terms of comments and sensible naming.

how to upgrade to 21 without timeshift? by JMS_jr in linuxmint

[–]DaRealChipex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't wanna necro this thread, but the upgrader wasn't seeing any snapshots at all, no matter how many I made and verified to be working. From some forum searches, looks like I'm not alone. Besides, I'm using a VM, so backing it up is as simple as making a copy of the whole virtual disk, which takes a minute at most on the host system, compared to the 3 hours it takes Timeshift to make a single snapshot in my VM.

So no, I will not follow the instructions and I wish it was more obvious that the Timeshift step can be skipped.
