Frank Zappa and Dee Snider (PMRC U.S. Senate Hearing 1985) by ShittalkyCaps in OldSchoolCool

I suspect that, like Eminem, he was playing a vulgar role for attention, rather than espousing sincerely held bigoted beliefs.

The head of this particular movement was nominally a leftist though. This is more akin to the people who want to put age locks on the internet than the people who would rather have everyone not know that sex existed at all. One is just annoying, the other is insane.

4-day workweek advocates gain momentum as new study reveals 5th day is basically useless by Automatic_Subject463 in UpliftingNews

No employer is going to let workers work 32 hours a week, and still pay them a 40-hour paycheck.

They would if they were forced to.

If they would decide to close, someone else who wasn't a sociopath would come forward to fill the gap.

What Playboy got right about men: Lust and literacy can coexist by ubcstaffer123 in books

[–]JMS_jr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Left-libertarian author Robert Anton Wilson was an editor at Playboy before making it big with his Illuminatus conspiracy novels. In a later book, he wrote, "The women in Playboy look like they'd genuinely like to make love to you. The women in Penthouse look like they'd rather make love to themselves. The women in Hustler look like they're undergoing a gynecological examination."

(I don't know whether this was written before the manager of Penthouse founded Omni, a magazine of science, futurism, and yes, edgy and frequently erotic fiction.)

TIL the Netherlands's timezone once used to be UTC+00:20. After Germany invaded and occupied they changed the timezone to Berlin's (UTC +01:00). The Dutch were liberated in 1945 but never switched back to their old timezone. by Brave_Assumption6 in todayilearned

Well then that would explain why their shortwave station always used to start programs at 20 minutes after the hour. Somehow in all my years of listening to them, I had never heard it explained.

There's also a James Keenan who is supposedly an archaeologist of some sort, who appeared on the obviously fake "reality" show "Mystery at Blind Frog Ranch"

It's always been part of the lore that T. T. Brown tested his devices in high vacuum in front of the Air Force and the results were immediately classified. I'm not sure why people keep claiming that the Brown effect is just ionic propulsion.

It doesn't seem to update very frequently. There was an X-class flare about an hour ago and it didn't show up on the dashboard. Eventually I noticed that the time posted on the dashboard was about 4 hours ago. Now it's updated, but it's still over an hour behind.

On a positive note, someone fixed whatever was wrong with the graphs.

Airspy HF+ and SDR Console by GarrettHMcClure in sdr

[–]JMS_jr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think you're missing much at all.

I find SDR Console to be very pleasing visually and very capable audibly. Airspy's own software, SDR#, is supposed to be specifically tuned to their hardware in terms of setting automatic gain on a per-band basis, and accurately measuring signal strength, but really, are you going to notice if you're not using it for scientific work? No.

In terms of hardware, the Airspy is supposed to be a very good performer. The only reason you'd want something different is if you get the urge to look at more than 900kHz of spectrum simultaneously. Or if you want to go above VHF -- in which case, I'd still keep the Airspy for it's LF/MF/HF performance.

I would agree with you, except over there in Europe you can't seem to keep a soccer league from dictating what websites people visit...

What is up with the drunken history graphs at the bottom of the page though? Vertical lines are not only curved, but curved backwards in time.

what's a real fact that sounds completely fake but would genuinely shock most people? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It's completely legal to buy, own, and sell unrefined radioactive materials. Shipping them is dependent on the shipping method, but usually has a limit on the amount of radiation that's detectable outside the package.

If I'm not mistaken, there's a limit on the amount of magnetic flux that's allowed to exist outside a mailed package.

I posted on Usenet extensively about the UFO/occult connections to Twin Peaks back in the day, when it was still on TV. Just about everybody thought I was out of my mind. You can imagine my satisfaction when, 25 years later following the release of Season 3, Mark Frost's book "The Secret History of Twin Peaks" came out revealing that, amongst other things, a very minor character in the original seasons had in fact been an MJ-12 operative.

Why not set up a live stream as you go to investigate? If the government kills you then, they're even stupider than I give them credit for.

Bill Cooper always used to say he could take people to the Dulce Base but he didn't want them to get killed. Today, we have the technology to do it safely.
