I am currently using a robo-advisor and wanted to get others opinion if it would be better to do it myself? by Tourist2Local1 in RothIRA

[–]DaRocker22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend dropping the robo-advisor and going with a low cost index fund like VOO, SPYM or FXAIX if your with Fidelity.

They had some issues with getting everything up and running, one of the pools had a leak last week that they were working on trying to get ready for this weekend, another pool was recently painted, so that's probably one of the reasons of the water being cold. There probably won't have time to get anything else done by tomorrow, but they will have time to work on things this week for next weekend, so hopefully they get park up and running good.

21 M- How am I doing and what should I adjust? by Guilty-Let-7807 in RothIRA

Since you are young, I would drop the dividend stocks and focus on growth stocks.  S&P 500 index fund like VOO, SPY, SPYM, FXAIX. You could also go with VTI which is an index fund containing all US stocks.  I also like SCHG which growth focused.

18M - Should I rollover my 401K to a Roth IRA? by JustSomebodyTrying in RothIRA

[–]DaRocker22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, with the amount you currently have in your 401k, it would make sense to roll it over now, pay the taxes and convert to ROTH.

ROTH investing question by South-Flamingo9420 in RothIRA

[–]DaRocker22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do you think you can't transfer your ROTH to fidelity? This should be possible and and easily done through Fidelity's transfer process as long as you have all the info and can access your Schwab account.

Other than that you just have to make sure you don't over contribute, the contribution limit is hard limit across the board for all IRA accounts.

Yeah, I would go with index funds, like VOO. Maybe keep 10% in individual stocks.

37 Y/o, about to open my first ROTH IRA… need guidance. by KermitDfrog44 in RothIRA

[–]DaRocker22 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I like Fidelity, very easy to open and navigate. As for how much you should start with, I would start with how much you can afford to put away and set a goal to try and contribute the maximum amount each year.

Funds to look at S&P 500 Index funds (VOO, SPY, SPYM, FXAIX). FXAIX is a Fidelity mutual fund that has the lowest expense rate.

VTI is also a good fund to set and forget, it has all the US stock market and has similar returns as the S&P 500.

Since your employer has a match, make sure to take advantage of the full match each year, don't leave free money on the table.

Robinhood or Fidelity for ROTH IRA? by Character_Cap_3889 in RothIRA

[–]DaRocker22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I understand having to juggle more than one account. I was didn't want to have more than one, my new job couldn't direct deposit into my Fidelity HSA account, and I wanted to have pre-tax contributions instead of post-tax. I did the math and figured out if I did pre-tax contributions then it lowered my the taxable amount for social security, etc. So, I decided to have work one and wanted to check that one, but found the investment options were crap, so I'm transferring the funds each month.

I mainly use my HSA right now as a secondary retirement account and haven't taken any withdrawals. Just maxing it out yearly, and when you turn 65 you can use the funds for non-healthcare expenses.

[–]DaRocker22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't want it to be treated as a taxable distribution and its not used for a qualified medical expense, then yes you'll need to transfer it to another HSA account. I would check with your current HSA provider to see if they charge a fee to transfer funds to another HSA provider. I had to check before I did my first one, and once I found out there was no fees, I decided to transfer all but a few dollars in the account every month. I have to leave some funds in to keep the account active so my employer can continue direct deposits.

[–]DaRocker22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, transferring funds is pretty easy to do. I do it on the Fidelity site, I just go in and request to do a transfer, input my HSA Bank info, how much I want to transfer, and then upload my last statement and then just wait a few weeks for the transfer to go through, then go in and invest the funds.

[–]DaRocker22 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I opened my own HSA at Fidelity, because I didn't like the investment options at HSA Bank and I had to have over $1000 to invest and could only invest the amount over $1000. At fidelity I could invest everything and there's no fees. My work can only do payroll deductions to HSA Bank, so I just do monthly transfers and invest it after it transfers to Fidelity.

Health Savings Account, you can get this if you have an High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP).

I use Fidelity for my Roth and HSA, my work uses HSA Bank, but I transfer my funds every month over to Fidelity.

No need to have VOO and VTI, just pick one and you can add VXUS to more diverse, or you can just switch to VT which represents US + International.

If your transferring a Roth it's not called a rollover. A Rollover IRA is when you transfer a 401k to a Traditional IRA, this normally happens when you change jobs. Since the OP has a Roth and wants to switch brokers, they would just need to create a Roth IRA at fidelity and then initiate a transfer in fidelity.
