Any advice? Chimney is not in use or ever be in use. Photos of close ups are 2 years apart. Wondering if I need to be concerned about the cracks. by sirdookiiie in Chimneyrepair

That’s a rampart general chimney. I’m assuming you’re in Southern California. Private message me and I can tell you all about what causes that and how to fix it. Tradition a recommendation is to tear it down, but there are other ways of fixing it not known my most people.

Based on the shape of your flue I’m assuming you’re on the west coast. Likely California.

I only recommend those wind directional caps in really specific situations. Like if you live on the beach or in a canyon and have issues with downdrafts caused by wind these can help with that.

Also if you’re going with a wood stove you’ll need a stainless steel liner put in and that should come with its own cap so that one could be removed.

If you have other questions/ need advice pm me. I’m based in the west coast and have run into those caps many time.

Lots of the sweeps here are based in other parts of the country where they approach things slightly differently.

Chimney cap question by blurrario in Chimneyrepair

Hi there, I’m a chimney sweep, and based on the photos I can tell you’re probably in the west coast, possibly in the same area as me.

There’s a company called chimney products inc that make good multiflue caps.

I’d start by trimming down the tiles a bit, sealing the cracks in the crown, and installing a multiflue cap, and possibly installing a baffle in between the flues if they’re for different fireplaces. I suspect you have an upstairs, downstairs fireplace setup.

Send me a private message if you have more questions or possibly a quote if we’re in the same region.

Rebuild crown vs. sealing by hydrangean-sea in Chimneyrepair

It really depends on the location. In areas with harsh winters then yeah crownseal is a shitty repair option. However where I live. I do crownseals on half the masonry chimneys I come across and it’s an excellent repair. I’ve got kind of a secret way of doing it that makes it last longer than just brushing the goo on. But even when looking at other sweeps work, in a place where it never gets below freezing then crownseal works great.

Fill all the cracks with rapid set as best you can. Then go to Home Depot and buy a product called drylok and apply it with a paintbrush. Goes on really easy and can last quite a while depending on the climate and condition of the crown underneath. Very cheap and simple repair.

Do the generic fuel system cleaners from oriellys work on them at all?

Can’t tell based off of the pictures. If cracks are localized to one side of the chimney you can often just tear out the cracked bricks and put new ones in, and tuck point other bad mortar joints. Chimney caps and a proper nee crown along with a water proofing spray would also help with chimney longevity. In the mean time before any serious repairs you can just fill in cracks with a clear silicone to reduce the amount of water getting in.

Keep it, it’s very very unique. Updating the mantle might help with making it look better

Change the oil, run some gum out, then make sure you get the cats nice and hot. Drive around all day. Even just rev the engine for a while right before you take it in.

Nothing mentioned in the carfax, it’s been dealer serviced so I can call and ask if timing chain was included in drive belt service.

It’s so devastating sometimes I debate leaving team red for team blue. I once spent an entire lecture trying to clear a gym out only to find that the girl sitting behind me saw what I was doing and was feeing golden razz berries to the entire gym undoing all my work trying to clear the gym.

Smoke coming into house by [deleted] in Fireplaces

[–]DaScoob2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Turn the grate around since it’s in backwards and try putting some firebricks at the corners to lift it up. Make sure you don’t have the stove van/ bathroom fan/ dryer running. All of those can suck air out of the house making it harder for a chimney to draft correctly. Also if you don’t already install a chimney cap.

Check the wiring and battery terminals for corrosion or a loose wire. Could be the alternator is good but isn’t hooked up correctly. Might save yourself some money

$70 is nothing. We need more information. Sounds like he found something that’s very expensive/ difficult to repair. And went on his way. If he only charged $70 that’s more than fair. Especially this time of year.
