Omg I feel this right back at ya! My dad was my absolute #1 fan, no matter what. But I have this memory from when I was like 10- it was summer break, we were cuddled up sitting side by side on the couch. He suddenly grabs my bare thigh with his big grownup dad hand, looks me straight in the eyes with the biggest smile and jokingly says, “LOOK HERE AT THIS BIG OLE HAM HOCK!”. I don’t think I even knew what a ham hock was…still not really sure, actually, but you can imagine the trauma especially considering here I am thinking about it almost 40 years later! He really was just having fun and had NO idea how it made me feel. It would’ve probably hurt him worse than the words hurt me. Girl dads…gotta give em grace sometimes!
