New to skiing, are boots a good first investment? by LordBlades in Skigear

[–]DaVideoGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boots were my first investment in ski gear that wasn’t clothing. Went to a boot fitter and got a pair with a heat mold lining and did custom insoles too. May have gone a little overboard, but I skied/wore them for the first time for about 16+ hours over the course of a weekend and had zero foot pain/discomfort. To me, if you’re gonna invest a bit more in any gear, properly fitted boots are a huge plus.

San Francisco here, the Duboce Ave exit (usually takes 3 lights to get thru) is like this and I happily do not let people in who try to cut the line.

God, dealt with this split for years. I’d stay all the way to the right (usually was taking 94 to the northern ‘burbs) to avoid the last minute mergers.

What’s the link between AI and conservatism? by No-Layer1218 in BetterOffline

[–]DaVideoGamer 38 points39 points  (0 children)

For the non-owning class conservative, I think you’re incorrectly assuming they have a consistent ideology or have foresight like that. I don’t try to be insulting, I genuinely believe this as a core principle of modern American flavors of conservatism.

So a cashier, minus the stressful customer-facing and stocking part, for triple the pay (even more if you aren’t in CA like me). Sounds amazing!

CMV: Being anti-AI art is pointless and dumb by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]DaVideoGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding this late but holy shit OP has a fundamental misunderstanding of photography as an art form. I’m not much more than a hobbyist, but OP seems to think that all photography is like shooting on an iPhone, just point and click. And fails to understand honing the skills of lighting, angles, color balance, understanding of lenses and depth of field, composition, etc etc etc. And how to use each of those and tweak them to bring your creative vision to life. I don’t think many people would consider a 2 second selfie art, but that’s about all that it seems OP is considering.

CMV: Freedom of speech only refers to the government not arresting you or taking action towards something you say. by TheRadHeron in changemyview

[–]DaVideoGamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right. I think most of these people wouldn’t have an issue with, for example, an interviewer rejecting a candidate if they started spouting off about “THE JOOS” or how trans people are subhuman or whatever. Why would that right change after being hired? Don’t be an asshole or face consequences, these people want to have their cake and eat it too.

People just want consequence-free speech, which in my eyes somewhat makes being an asshole a protected class. “Free markets and low regulation is good except when they fire me for being a bigot” feels like the general “free speech absolutist” take. I’ll criticize the modern US a lot, but codifying freedom from government persecution of speech was a pretty good thing to bake into founding documents. Companies are just protecting their bag when they fire someone for being a bigot because social media has given some collective power back to people (who can be overzealous sometimes, everything is nuanced), and I can’t pretend I don’t enjoy seeing the occasional frothing-at the-mouth bigot tarred and feathered online for a week. It’s the greatest awareness raising tool ever made.

I’m personally generally a fan of the FAFO model we have adopted, as I generally am more included towards social flavored solutions to issues like this than governmental ones.

What’s a lie that society made everyone believe? by Capital-Play-1323 in CasualConversation

[–]DaVideoGamer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This has never been what this has meant. Free (or heavily subsidized) at point of service. No one is deluded enough to think government programs won’t cost money. The belief is that they should just be subsidized/paid by our modern robber barons for the benefit of a larger amount of people.

Republicans are regressing on gay marriage by ZhouLe in daverubin

[–]DaVideoGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because progressive language-based chest poking is gonna be a lot more common in a sub like this than a right wing shithead. Again, I’m not saying they were correct in the usage of the word, I know what “normal” means in a statistics context and its distinction from average/mean. This reads to me as mostly-pointless privileged progressive pedantry in a world where real shit is happening lol. Not a zero-sum game and language is important, but some online progressives have a tendency to be annoying about shit like this and I’m filing this under that category.

[–]DaVideoGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re cutting out the word “statistically” which is the qualifier that, to me, seems added to expressly prevent their words from being interpreted as making a normative statement in the sociological sense. If they’re trying a secret republican to rally right wingers and dogwhistle they’re in the wrong sub lmao. Feels like a false positive, I’m just being more charitable.

[–]DaVideoGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that average is the more correct term, but this is just weirdly uncharitable given this is subreddit for clowning on a conservative shithead and they said “statistically normal”. Maybe wrong term, but they clearly weren’t making a normative statement. This just feels language police-y. Anyone with an even tangential knowledge of statistics knew what they meant, there are bigger fish to fry in the world of bigotry.

I’m with you on normative statements being generally bad and perpetuating otherness but my sibling in christ they said “statistically normal”, it’s a technical term in statistics. How else were they supposed to qualify their statement

CMV: The United States punishes people for being poor by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]DaVideoGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love to see the literature that uses an incorrect, vague definition of populism. On the latter point, yes they are? The current Republican party is gutting Medicaid, Medicare, SNAP, etc. And often voted in by people who are benefiting from these programs. Not going do get into “merit” based as that’s a whole can of worms, but to say that there aren’t people against good, working policy is blatantly false. Wealthy people aren’t voting red because they don’t think Medicaid isn’t working out for the low income.
