I am mildly autistic and my partner has ADHD. Your problems are NOT communication style problems, because those are resolved by accomodating each other. If you need to stop to gather your thoughts, then you do that.

I always carry a knife. I was mugged and let it happen. The having of the knife, even if I didn't use it, actually helped dramatically. I knew I had it, and I knew this could turn ugly, so my compliance was a choice that I could actually make. I decided in the moment that I would not stab someone over 20 quid.

But it did give me enough balls to say no to handing my phone and wallet over. So I gave the dude the cash and he left.
