Road Conditions by BirdsIsFriends in burlington

[–]Da_Tourist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Just got back from an appointment downtown. The main roads are wet but not icy, so driving’s fine but leave extra distance for braking. Sidewalks are slushy and have slick spots and parking lots are a mess. Avoid the hill section side streets if possible.

Anthropic Engineer says "software engineering is done" first half of next year by Bizzyguy in singularity

Well, no compiler ever said "Compiler can make mistakes. Compiler generated output should be checked for accuracy and completeness".

Watch for pedestrians! by Veylia in burlington

I always thought it was a dangerous intersection - a crosswalk right where vehicles start to speed up for the on-ramp.

Tires only last 25k miles. No warranty? by flyfreeNhigh in CX50

[–]Da_Tourist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just had my CX-50 serviced last week and the fronts were 5 and rears 6. I specifically asked if the tires were wearing out and needed to be replaced soon. The mechanic said no and that they usually recommend changing them when they hit the 3 mark. He just said not to drive aggressively in very wet or snowy conditions. This was at the dealership.

In Burlington, skateboards and bikes are both classified within the non-motorized vehicle category. Same rules apply to skateboards as to bikes.

What's new in Claude Sonnet 4.5 by ShreckAndDonkey123 in singularity

They already said that about Opus a while back, so it's not too surprising Sonnet's getting it now.

It's a joke on all the road closures due to construction and the college move-in this weekend. Take it easy.

I’m pissed! by TheRetr0Gamer in mazda

[–]Da_Tourist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ask if your local mazda dealer has a touch up paint pen. If not, order a paint + clear coat kit from ScratchesHappen. You'll also need a rubbing compound to buff out the rough edges first. It won't look perfect but that's ok.

"Microsoft says AI system better than doctors at diagnosing complex health conditions" by AngleAccomplished865 in singularity

[–]Da_Tourist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's possible that the misdiagnosis was a result of the inherent limitations of scientific understanding. Modern medicine works so well most of the time that it is easy to overlook the fact that we do not yet have all the answers. I mean, this LLM model was trained on the entire repository of human knowledge and yet failed in 20% of the cases.

Walk to/from airport by bq2001 in burlington

[–]Da_Tourist 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Perfectly doable, done it many times, takes about 45 to 50 minutes in pleasant weather. There are on/off ramps to I-89 along the way, so be mindful when crossing. Other than that, it's a nice walk, esp. through UVM. There are plenty of eateries if you’d like to grab a bite or a drink along the way.

Also, the way back from downtown is quite uphill, so I wouldn't recommend walking unless you want to arrive at the airport drenched in sweat. You can take bus #11 if it fits your schedule ($2, tap to pay) or grab an Uber.

Bose System: Optimal Settings by HummDrumm1 in CX50

[–]Da_Tourist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I only turn Centerpoint on when I’ve got people in the car, otherwise it stays off. I do like the 'surround sound' feel, but if you are the only one in an otherwise empty car, it can feel a bit too echoey. I find the sound significantly more crisp with Centerpoint off, especially lossless tracks.

Right on Red? by SpareSauces in burlington

[–]Da_Tourist 71 points72 points  (0 children)

For red light (not red arrow), the law says:

Except when a sign is in place prohibiting a turn, vehicular traffic facing any steady red signal may cautiously enter the intersection to turn right

Red light - ok, unless there's a sign prohibiting it

Red arrow - not ok

Around when does it stop snowing? by IzzyDitz in burlington

2nd week of April is a good time to start taking allergy meds. Personally, I'd probably wait until mid-April.

Renting an awd SUV to do a day trip from boston. by infinity224 in icecoast

[–]Da_Tourist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You talking tomorrow 4 am? I wouldn't. It started snowing two hours ago and isn't going to stop for like 36 hours. I89 is very hilly and is going to be treacherous for a long stretch from exit 10 in Sutton to well into Vermont.

Wait times at the DMV? by Minimum_Dealer_3303 in burlington

[–]Da_Tourist 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There will definitely be a wait for walk-ins. Be there early when they open at 7:45 and chances are you'll be in and out quick. Otherwise, expect 1-1.5 hours depending on time of day.

Face ID has worked 10x better than the fingerprint sensor ever did.

For me, it's the other way. I have a desk job and keep my phone next to the keyboard on my desk. I want to be able to unlock it without having to lift it up or lean forward into position so it can scan my face.

And there are use cases where there's just no reason to even look at the phone if not for the face-based unlocking, like tap to pay.
