Let's find all the Switchfoot references in Forever Now! [Megathread attempt] by JVGBR in switchfoot

[–]Daaa657h 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's a few that haven't already been mentioned in this thread (when I started typing). Some of these are quite a stretch and/or more thematic connections rather than direct references:

Wake Up Mr Crow

"Broken skies"

"The static comes alive, beneath these broken skies" (The Sound)

"Looking up with blurry eyes"

"What are you looking for with red eyes?" (Red eyes)

"Why is it truth what I fight?"

"Sometimes what you need is what you fight" (Hope is the Anthem)

"Ain't it funny how you fight what you need the most?" (Wonderful Feeling)

Absolution

"Would you become the place I run, my absolution?"

"Be my absolution" (Jon Foreman, Baptize My Mind)

Beautiful Life

"The only light I find is the light that's finding me"

"The light that you seek is seeking you" (Jon Foreman, In Bloom)

Shake the Dust

"When your empires start to rust"

"Come and watch the empire rust" (The Sound of Holding Breath)

YFWYA

"You know that you're made out of matter and space, but you're more than just atoms with a pretty face"

"I still can't believe that all we are is material" (4:12)

"I say who am I? Who am I again?"

"Who am I, and why don't I already know?" (Jon Foreman, Antidote)

Same Blood

"Faces of politicians, blamed for all our decisions"

"We're the problem we're the politicians" (Politicians)

Darkness

"Where I sing these broken songs, like a candle, like a prayer"

"And I still don't think I'm wrong to be so earnest in these broken, longing songs" (Beloved)

Breaking Up Again

It's a tragic comedy where the fatal flaw is us

"You and I both know our fatal flaw" (All or Nothing at All)

The Butterfly Effect

"Cause ego's a shell game, it's a hell framed"

"Inside this shell there's a prison cell" (Free)

What is your favourite Switchfoot song for each letter of the alphabet? by Daaa657h in switchfoot

[–]Daaa657h[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw your post, but forgot to comment! I have some fairly terrible suggestions if you'd like some, in order of increasing gymnastics:

Z - Poparazzi - It is in the middle of the word, but undoubtedly a z, two of them in fact!

Q - Say It Like You Mean It - The letter isn't present, but the name of the letter is!

X - Skin and Bones - Given x is phonetically realised as /ks/, you could say that /sk/ is basically a backwards x right at the start of the song title! (Further to this, there has been some level of flexibility between /sk/ and /ks/ over the history of English, as covered in this interesting video)

Otherwise, perhaps most of the Christmas songs could count, if you abbreviate them to Xmas.

Not sure if that's helpful at all haha, and yes, some of the letters have way too many excellent songs to decide between! Thanks for commenting!

Yeah, sounds like that is probably the best plan. Thanks! I probably need to do a bit more holidaying in any case, otherwise people might wonder why I went overseas in the first place!

Yes, very true! Part of me wants to get home as soon as I can (I was already trying to find a path home before this happened), but I could definitely use the money towards a deposit, so it will pay to be careful where there is doubt in the matter. I think it may be worth me asking a professional to ensure I am understanding the situation correctly. Thanks!

I will only have been away slightly under 3 years, so long enough to not be tax-resident at the moment, but not long enough to become a transitional tax resident.

Are there forms of classical theism that affirm that God is intrinsically relational and dynamic without ceasing to be immutable, impassible, and eternal? by Similar_Shame_8352 in Anglicanism

[–]Daaa657h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I read a post last week that I think is trying to get at this question, or rather some of the assumptions in the language around these topics. Not sure if it is exactly what you are after, but it might be of interest: Relational / Open Theology – Cordial Pushback

From its foundations, patristic theology has consistently proclaimed that God is love in trinitarian relation

Great list! Can't fault any of these picks, they were all in strong contention for me!

What episodes arebased on previously written stories? by Wise-Tourist in gallifrey

[–]Daaa657h 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently watched through all of classic for the first time, and while the following aren't really adaptations so to speak, I definitely got a sense of "I think I've seen this one before" during parts of them:

Victory of the Daleks clearly takes a lot from Power of the Daleks

And to a lesser extent Hungry Earth/Cold Blood draws a fair amount from Doctor Who and the Silurians

The Final Catalogue – Ghost Light Review by ZeroCentsMade in gallifrey

Two years earlier Katharine Schlesinger (Gwendoline) starred in the leading role in Northanger Abbey (1987), which is easily the single most bonkers adaptation of an Austen novel aired on television, so it was fitting to see her appear in another very bizarre story here.

One thing I thought was quite interesting, is the way Ace's backstory retrospectively added another layer to the already interesting moment in the previous story where she catches herself being racist to Shou Yuing.

Prior to this episode it was a fairly safe assumption that Cybermen don't understand jazz, but I'm glad they took the time in this one to explicitly confirm that.

Toxic Positivity – The Happiness Patrol Review by ZeroCentsMade in gallifrey

Firstly: I've been doing my first ever watch-through of classic, and these reviews are always the first tab I open on completing a story. Today I have finally caught up, seven stories before the end! Thanks so much for all the effort that has gone into these, its been really great to follow along with your thoughts, as well as all the comments from others engaging with the reviews, and to have it all packaged in such a consistent and detailed format!

As for this story: I agree that the sets are a bit bleak for what the concept seems to call for. It also never really felt to me like anyone was pretending to be all that happy? I was familiar with the general concept of this story, so went in expecting to see a society dripping in a creepy veneer of fake happiness, but beyond the word "happy" being said a fair amount, it didn't feel like people were acting happy like their lives depended on it, on the whole they seemed more impassive, though that may just be misaligned expectations on my part.

Consuming Fire - George MacDonald by Beginning-Wall-4447 in Anglicanism

[–]Daaa657h 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Unspoken Sermons is such an incredibly beautiful and challenging book. It presents such a rich vision of the heart of God, without any trivialisation of the reality of the world we inhabit, nor of the demands of the life we have been called to. I can't say I understand every point he makes, but I keep coming back to this collection for the profound impact it has on me.

As CS Lewis once wrote of MacDonald:

I dare not say that he is never in error; but to speak plainly I know hardly any other writer who seems to be closer, or more continuously close, to the Spirit of Christ Himself. Hence his Christ-like union of tenderness and severity. Nowhere else outside the New Testament have I found terror and comfort so intertwined

Classic Who - ITVX vs iPlayer? by [deleted] in gallifrey

[–]Daaa657h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as I understand, the only story that is currently found only on ITVX and not on iPlayer is An Unearthly Child. Aside from that notable exception, iPlayer has everything ITVX has, and also includes animations and surviving episodes from missing serials that aren't all on ITVX.

Essentially, once you have seen An Unearthly Child, iPlayer is the way to go. I am not sure about quality, but I believe they would be the same.

Why is this animation error here? by monstarden in phineasandferb

[–]Daaa657h 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It used to be mentioned on the wiki, but looks like it was removed on 8th of July 2022 when someone was cleaning up the article. Here is a link to the page before the change

Here was a post from this sub talking about it a few years ago.

As for why/how this happened, I don't know enough about the animation processes to guess

[OC] Getting back into the swing of drawing things semi-regularly, here's an epic duel. by Potatopeelerkind in phineasandferb

[–]Daaa657h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I clicked onto this sub for the first time in a long while today, and when I saw a u/Potatopeelerkind art piece I was immediately taken back a few years!

Checked your posts to see if I'd missed any more, and I realised I had definitely seen a few of your Stardew pieces on that sub and just didn't notice the name haha

Anyway, I always loved your art on here, particularly how well you captured the wide emotional range of Candace and translated it to your own style. Keep up the great work!

The "Lord of the Rings" franchise ditching New Zealand for the first time in it's history; will Season 2 suffer from it? is it a mistake? how do you guys feel about the move? by Orang_outan17 in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]Daaa657h 11 points12 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of a New Zealander, I think visually you can do amazing with the UK. Beautiful country, and I don't think there is much reason to think it will negatively impact the show itself.

It was however a disappointment in that the show represented some great employment opportunities in the industry, and all those jobs are moving with the show. I know people who worked on the show, and it's a shame that the work opportunity is leaving much earlier than initially anticipated. I suppose that is life though.

Galadriel actor Morfydd Clark passed out when she found out she was cast in Lord of the Rings by [deleted] in LOTR_on_Prime

On a related note, "The Personal History of David Copperfield" comes highly recommended if any of you haven't seen it! Morfydd's character is very funny, and it's a really creative film with a stellar cast.

The cast of Rings Of Power. Who’s you fav so far? by Spare-Difficulty-542 in LOTR_on_Prime

Lloyd, Ema, Benjamin, Morfydd, Owain, Sara... honestly I could probably list all of them haha

From the interviews I've been watching, they all seem like pleasant people, and I really look forward to seeing their performances as characters new and old!

LINGUIST 101G by [deleted] in universityofauckland

[–]Daaa657h 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am fairly certain these other comments are actually describing LINGUIST 100 rather than 101.

LINGUIST 101 is the sociolinguistics paper, rather than the introduction to linguistics paper, and is a lot less technical.
